The western North Carolina native announced last week he was stepping down from coaching after leading the Tar Heels to three national championships in 18 seasons. The News and Observer reported yesterday that two current UNC assistant coaches are in the running for the position. UNC Greensboro's coach and former Tar Heel Jerry Stackhouse are also reportedly being considered.

Suspect Faces Drug Charges After Chase

(Rutherford County, NC) -- A suspect is facing drug charges in the wake of a deputy chase in Rutherford County. The man reportedly led the sheriff's office on a chase after a deputy attempted to stop him. He allegedly ditched the car and ended up lying in a thicket. Investigators found more than 70 grams of meth and marijuana.

Tourist Baseball Holding Job Fairs

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville's minor league baseball team is hiring. The Tourists are hosting two job fairs at McCormick Field this week, with the first coming up tomorrow night from five to seven. Openings are available in food and beverage, customer service and fan experience. Asheville will take the field for the first time since 2019 on May 4th, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Tweetsie Railroad Re-Opens

(Blowing Rock, NC) -- The whistle is blowing against a popular western North Carolina train. Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock opened last weekend for the first time since public health and other government officials chose to shut down businesses and events last year over COVID-19 concerns. Visitors are required to purchase advance tickets. The crowd will be at 50-percent capacity, while face coverings are mandatory and indoor dining is limited. Tweetsie is a family-friendly Wild West adventure that first started running more than 60 years ago.

Asheville Assault Suspect Wanted

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are looking for an assault suspect. Officers say a man is accused of attacking someone after breaking into a home on Erskine Street early Sunday afternoon. He's considered dangerous, and the public is being advised to use caution. The victim allegedly suffered a minor injury, but is expected to survive.

Mooresville Police Arrest Murder Suspect

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- A murder suspect is in jail thanks to Mooresville police officers. Brian King is accused of stabbing his grandfather to death in Asheboro early Saturday morning. He was tracked to the Edgemoor Park neighborhood in Mooresville just a little while later. King is now charged with his grandfather's murder.

Vigil Held After Charlotte Child Shootings

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Charlotte community is still looking for answers in the wake of gun violence involving children. Four juveniles, including two seven-year-olds, were injured by gunfire last week. Three people have been arrested and face charges in connection to the shootings. A prayer vigil was organized on Hovis Street Friday night, when a group held a march against violence.

Suspect Charged In Salisbury Triple Shooting

(Salisbury, NC) -- A suspect is accused of shooting three people at a Salisbury restaurant. Shots were allegedly fired outside Los Arcos Mexican restaurant on Klumac Road late Saturday morning. The suspected gunman was arrested for second-degree attempted murder. Officers tracked down his car not long after the shooting.

Kidnapping Suspect Arrested In Rowan County

(Rowan County, NC) -- A kidnapping suspect is facing a slew of charges in a police chase that ended in Rowan County. Investigators tried pulling over the 32-year-old man after he allegedly abducted a woman at gunpoint in Randolph County early Saturday afternoon. He crashed a car on I-85 South in Rowan County and ran off, while firing several shots at deputies. The victim was found safe before the suspect was found and arrested for attempted murder, kidnapping and more.

Teen's Body Found In Northern Wake County

(Wake County, NC) -- The search for a missing teenager in northern Wake County is ending in tragedy. A 19-year-old disappeared in the water while swimming near the Falls Lake Dam early Sunday evening. Recovery crews found the body around four hours later. ABC11 is reporting three children under the age of 18 died due to drowning at Falls Lake in 2020.

Newton Grove Police Officer Dies In Wreck

(Newton Grove, NC) -- A town in Sampson County is mourning the loss of a police officer. Newton Grove officer Brent Hall died in a single-car crash in Clinton on Saturday night. The highway patrol reports Hall allegedly hit speeds of 80 miles-an-hour in a 35 zone before losing control. Hall's family says he was set to turn 27-years-old in just a few days.

Johnston County Holding Drive-Thru Vaccine Clinic

(Johnston County, NC) -- COVID vaccines are being given out at a drive-thru site in Johnston County. Health officials will be on hand at North Johnston High School beginning at eight Wednesday morning, when up to 500 doses will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis. The vaccine will be the medicine made by Johnson & Johnson, which is just a single dose. The state is expanding vaccine eligibility to all adults on Wednesday.

Baby Found Abandoned In Garden In Greensboro

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are looking for the person who stole a car with a baby in the backseat. It happened early Saturday morning at a Valero gas station on South Elm-Eugene Street. The 14-month-old child was later found abandoned in a home garden on Memphis and Kersey streets. Police say he was wrapped in a blanket and sitting in his carseat. He was taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Eden Man Killed In Greensboro Wreck

(Greensboro, NC) -- An Eden man is dead after a head-on wreck in Greensboro. Police say 71-year-old Odis Alexiou was driving down Battleground Avenue Saturday morning when he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle. The passenger in that vehicle, Joseph Edwards, was killed. Alexiou was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and driving left of center.

Man Arrested in Stabbing Death Of His Grandpa

(Randolph Co., NC) -- A 25-year-old man is under arrest in Randolph County in connection to the stabbing death of his grandfather. Brian King was taken into custody yesterday morning in Mecklenburg County. He's accused of stabbing 74-year-old Harold King to death in Asheboro and then taking off with a woman who later called 9-1-1. An investigation is ongoing.

Three Dead, Four Hurt In NC Shooting

(Wilmington, NC) -- Three people are dead and four are injured after a shooting in North Carolina. It happened overnight Friday at a house party in Wilmington. Officers found seven victims at the scene, including three who were dead. There is no one in custody and no motive at this time. Police do not believe the general public is in danger.

(Greensboro, NC) -- A North Carolina woman is a million dollars richer after a late night urge to check her lottery numbers. Adrienne Wynn says she woke up in the middle of the night and called the state's lottery hotline to check her Mega Millions numbers. That's when she found out her ticket was a million-dollar winner. Wynn said she called five times just to make sure. She plans to use the cash to pay bills, buy a new home and invest.
