(Asheville, NC) -- Solidarity rallies are going on today across North Carolina in connection to the death of Andrew Brown, Junior. He was fatally shot by deputies while they served a search warrant in Elizabeth City nearly six weeks ago. The nonprofit group Repairers of the Breach and the North Carolina Council of Churches are partnering to hold rallies at five this afternoon in Asheville and seven other cities in the state. The mission is to elevate the call for state and federal actions to help make the investigation transparent.

Suspect Charged In Forest City Murder

(Forest City, NC) -- A Rutherfordton man is facing charges in a western North Carolina death. The victim was shot to death on Dogwood Lane in Forest City late Saturday night. The SBI, Rutherford County Sheriff's Office and Rutherfordton Police Department helped capture the 38-year-old suspect on charges including first-degree murder. He's in jail without bond.

Vaccination Rate Going Down In NC

(Raleigh, NC) -- The rate of vaccinations is decreasing in North Carolina. The number of COVID vaccine doses administered over the past two weeks has dropped roughly 30-percent. Around 36-percent of North Carolina's population is considered fully vaccinated. COVID case numbers and hospitalizations have been on a steady decline over the last month.

NCDOT Encouraging Seatbelt Use

(Raleigh, NC) -- The DOT is encouraging drivers and passengers to buckle up on North Carolina's roads. Law enforcement agencies are in the midst of another Click-It-or-Ticket campaign, which runs through Sunday. The agency says 500 people who weren't properly wearing seatbelts died on roads across the state in 2020.

Seven New Principals Named In Buncombe County

(Buncombe County, NC) -- New leaders are coming on board for a number of Buncombe County Schools. The district says seven new principals have been named for the 2021-22 school year. Four principals from those schools left due to retirement.

Stanly County Assistant Superintendent Resigns

(Stanly County, NC) -- An assistant superintendent in Stanly County Schools is off the job, several days after graduation. It was revealed yesterday after an emergency school board meeting that Vicki Calvert resigned from her position. The superintendent apologized in a statement to those who attended South Stanly High's graduation ceremony on Friday night. One parent told WSOC-TV it appeared Calvert was intoxicated during the event.

One Woman Dead in North Charlotte Homicide

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is looking for the suspect in a deadly shooting. Officers found a 21-year-old woman shot to death in north Charlotte's Derita neighborhood early Monday morning. Investigators combed the area to speak with residents who may have witnessed anything.

Fire Causes Minor Injuries In Pineville

(Pineville, NC) -- Minor injuries are being reported from a Pineville fire. Flames erupted at The Pines apartment complex Monday morning. The heaviest part of the fire came from the second floor of the building. The injuries were reportedly due to smoke inhalation. There's no word on what caused the fire.

Charlotte Parks Ranked Near Bottom In U.S.

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte's parks rank near the bottom of a recent study. A nonprofit organization called The Trust For Public Land rated the Queen City 91st out of the nation's largest 100 cities for 2021. Despite the low ranking, that still marks a jump of four spots from 2020. The Park Score Index takes things like access, investment and acreage into account.

Memorial Day Ceremonies Held Across State To Honor Fallen Soldiers

(Raleigh, NC) -- Across the Triangle, small crowds gathered at several locations Monday to hold Memorial Day remembrances in honor of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Among those, a ceremony hosted by the Tar Heel Detachment of the Marine Corps League in front of the state Capitol in Raleigh. In Apex, a entire field of American flags was dedicated by the Sunrise Rotary Club. And in Fayetteville, a service was held to honor fallen soldiers who were once stationed at nearby Ft. Bragg.

Higher Utility Rates Go Into Effect Today For Customers Of Duke Energy

(Raleigh, NC) -- Starting today, customers of Duke Energy will receive an increase on their monthly utility bills. In a statement released Monday, the company said the increase will average around four-point-seven-percent for all of its customers. In total, the average monthly power bill will increase to just under 120 dollars a month.

North Carolina Ranked One Of Top Places In Country To Relocate To

(Raleigh, NC) -- A new study ranks the state of North Carolina as the 6th most popular state in the country for relocation. The study, conducted by United Van Lines, tracks yearly migration patterns and motivations for people wanting to relocate. The study found that American cities with a lower density population like Wilmington, North Carolina, had an inbound migration rate as high as 79-percent. State's with the highest outbound migration rate include New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Connecticut and California.

Restaurant Reservations Back Up To Pre-Pandemic Levels Across Central North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) -- Memorial Day weekend was marked by a sharp increase in the number of reservations made by people wanting to eat out across central North Carolina. Data released by Open Table showed that restaurant reservations were up 86-percent from last Memorial Day weekend and at about the same level as they were in 2019. The Open Table survey also found that the best day for outdoor dinning was this past Sunday, when reservations were up 13-percent over the same day in 2019.

Durham To Hire Back Former Employees To Fully Staff 911 Call Center

(Durham, NC) -- City leaders in Durham have announced plans to start rehiring retirees and former employees in an effort to fully staff its 911-call center. At last report, 26, or 40-percent of the 60 call center operator positions, were still vacant. As a result, an estimated 10-percent of Durham's calls have had to be rolled over and answered by Raleigh-Wake 911. City Manager Wanda Page said with the new hires, Durham plans to resume answering 100-percent of its 911 calls within the coming weeks.

Toddler, Infant Found Safe After Abduction In Grayson Co.

(Grayson Co., NC) -- A toddler and an infant are safe this morning after they were abducted overnight Sunday in Grayson County. Sheriff's deputies say the boys were found around 11 a.m. yesterday. The man and the woman accused of taking the children are still at large. James Armstrong and Michelle Mattingly are wanted on suspicion of child abduction, breaking and entering, domestic assault and child endangerment.

Silver Alert Issued For Missing Man From Greensboro

(Greensboro, NC) -- A Silver Alert is in effect for a missing Greensboro man. Eighteen-year-old Deven Cain was last seen Sunday near N.C. 68 and Regional Road. Police say he was riding a green mountain bike. Cain is described as Black, about five-foot-six and 135 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a gray hoodie with black pants at the time of his disappearance. Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
