Federal Disaster Relief Coming To Flood Victims

(Haywood County, NC) -- Flood victims in western North Carolina can now apply for federal assistance. Governor Roy Cooper announced yesterday that the damage from Tropical Storm Fred's remnants has been declared a federal disaster. Agents from FEMA will be arriving by the end of the week in Haywood County, which was hit the worst. Nearly 700 homes were damaged.

COVID Deaths At Mission Health Are Among Unvaccinated People

(Asheville, NC) -- All deaths connected to COVID-19 in the Mission Health System have one thing in common. The system's chief medical officer told Buncombe County Commissioners this week that every death since the beginning of the pandemic has been among people who are unvaccinated. More than 400 people have died. Mission Health does not have a vaccine requirement in place for its employees.

COVID Hospitalizations Up Double From Month Ago

(Raleigh, NC) -- COVID hospitalizations in North Carolina are showing a huge jump from just a month ago. Wednesday's reported total of just under 38-hundred patients is double the amount from early August. ICU patients being treated for COVID symptoms also remains above 900. The COVID vaccination rate for the entire North Carolina population is 51-percent.

Jail Visitations Suspended At Macon County Jail

(Macon County, NC) -- COVID-19 is leading to some changes at Macon County's jail. The sheriff announced yesterday that all visitations are suspended temporarily due to a rise in cases inside the facility. Telephone communication will remain uninterrupted. The amount of exposures and cases wasn't released by the sheriff's office.

Body Found In Macon County Field

(Macon County, NC) -- Deputies are investigating a death in Macon County. A man's body was found in a vacant field in the Nantahala area on Tuesday. A car was also located close by. Detectives are continuing a thorough investigation, but say at this time foul play is not involved.

Riley Howell To Receive Posthumous Civilian Honor

(Haywood County, NC) -- One of the nation's top civilian honors is going to Riley Howell. The western North Carolina native died while tackling a shooter on the campus of UNC Charlotte in the spring of 2019. His family will be in Boston tomorrow afternoon to accept the Citizens Honor Valor Award from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

Killing Of Charlotte Toddler Potentially Linked To High Schools

(Charlotte, NC) -- Investigators are continuing to piece together details in the deadly shooting of a Charlotte toddler. Three-year-old Asiah Fiquero was killed overnight Tuesday when 150 rounds were fired towards his home on Richard Rozzelle Drive. His five-year-old sister was injured. The CMPD says the shooters may be connected to several local high schools.

Mecklenburg's Mask Mandate Extending To Religious Ceremonies

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- Mecklenburg County is tightening its face mask requirement. Commissioners narrowly approved a measure yesterday which extends the mandate to indoor religious ceremonies. At-large commissioner Leigh Altman said there's no health reason for the faith community to be exempt from the requirement. It will go into effect ten days after the county officially provides notice about the rule change.

FBI Helping In Search For Charlotte Murder Suspect

(Charlotte, NC) -- The FBI is joining in the search for a Charlotte murder suspect accused in the killing of a Hurricane Ida evacuee. The agency said yesterday Makel Moore could be on his way to South Carolina or Virginia. Moore allegedly killed a woman at an art studio on East 22nd Street early Monday morning. Greensboro police have also named him as a person of interest in a homicide last Friday.

Woman Accused In Hickory Workplace Homicide Granted Bond

(Hickory, NC) -- A woman accused in a Hickory furniture plant murder could soon be out of jail. Attorneys for Tangela Parker say she was granted a 250-thousand-dollar bond yesterday, with a requirement for house arrest. Hickory police say Parker is accused of shooting a co-worker to death at TCS Designs early this year. Her husband allegedly helped her escape to Arizona, where they were both arrested two-months ago.

One Dead In Charlotte Double-Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a deadly double shooting in west Charlotte. Officers say a man died after he was found shot outside the Walmart on Wilkinson Boulevard yesterday. They believe the crime stemmed from an incident on West Boulevard. Another man was taken to the hospital with injuries.

Two Duke Energy Building For Sale In Uptown

(Charlotte, NC) -- Duke Energy is looking to sell two buildings in uptown. The plan is to move to company's headquarters into the Duke Energy Plaza at the former Metro Tower on South Tryon Street. It's a plan that consolidates office space in an effort to reduce the company's real estate blueprint. The Charlotte Observer reports two Duke towers on Church and College streets were put up for sale yesterday.

NC A&T Cancels Multiple Events

(Greensboro, NC) -- North Carolina A&T State University is calling off several homecoming events due to the spike in COVID-19 cases. The events take place the week of October 24th. They include the parade, Aggie Fan Fest and the annual Greek cookout. University officials say they're trying to manage large crowds. In addition, fans who attend the Homecoming game will have to provide proof of vaccination.

Report: NC COVID-19 Clusters Rise 71%

(Greensboro, NC) -- A report says that COVID-19 clusters in North Carolina are on the rise. The Department of Health and Human Services is reporting 170 virus clusters in K-through-12 schools. The weekly report identifies a cluster at the Triad Math and Science Academy where ten children tested positive for the disease. However, the principal there says the cases were not related.

Person Hit, Killed By SUV In Greensboro

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are investigating a deadly hit-and-run involving a pedestrian. It happened Tuesday night at the intersection of West Vandalia and South Holden roads. Police say the victim was in the roadway at the time. Their identity has not yet been released. It's unclear if the driver of the SUV involved will face charges.

Handgun Found At Parkland High School

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says a gun was found on the campus of Parkland High School. A tip yesterday led officials to search a student, who is now facing charges for having a weapon on campus. No one was threatened or harmed during the incident.
