(Raleigh, NC) -- The public has a little more time to chime in on North Carolina's newly-proposed legislative maps. Hearings are scheduled today and tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the State Capitol. An online hearing will be held at 5:30 both days as well. The News and Observer reports state lawmakers could approve a map in early November.

Police Patrol Increase For Halloween Week

(Raleigh, NC) -- Police patrols are picking up across North Carolina this Halloween season. A statewide enforcement campaign called "Booze It or Lose It" is underway today through Sunday night. Local law enforcement personnel and Asheville Mayor Esther Manheimer kicked off the campaign at downtown restaurant, Rabbit Rabbit.

(Rutherford County, NC) -- There's no reason for mountain residents to worry over recent threats circulating on social media. That's the message from the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office after threats were shared on Snapchat referencing a Central High School last week. Investigators say the message is most likely not connected to R-S Central High School locally, but instead to a school in Missouri.

Owen Middle School Hosting Vaccine Clinic

(Buncombe County, NC) -- Health officials will be on hand for COVID vaccines at a Buncombe County school. Charles D. Owen Middle School is hosting a clinic tomorrow afternoon from three-to-six. Those receiving their first shot will be eligible for a 100-dollar gift card. Parents or guardians will need to give permission for any students who wish to get a vaccine.

Murals Painted Outside Asheville Non-Profit

(Asheville, NC) -- New murals are lining the walls of an Asheville non-profit organizations. WLOS-TV says nationally-recognized artist Brian Peterson has installed a piece of art outside Western Carolina Rescue Ministries on Patton Avenue. A second mural is set to be done by Wednesday. The artwork embodies the non-profit work the organization completes on a daily basis.

United Way Thanking Henderson County Teachers

(Henderson County, NC) -- A large effort to say thank you to teachers is underway in Henderson County. The local United Way chapter is looking for volunteers to help write personalized thank-you notes to 18-hundred staff members. It's part of the 6th annual Day of Action project. Superintendent Dr. John Bryant said he's never been more proud of the staff as they work through COVID protocols.

CMPD Sends SWAT Team To Barricade

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a SWAT team response in southwest Charlotte. Police first responded to Prideland Court in the Lions Gate neighborhood, where a man was allegedly barricaded inside with a rifle yesterday. Investigators say there was no threat to the public. Officers were on the scene the entire afternoon, but it's unclear at this time how that situation was resolved.

Charlotte Celebrates Black Restaurant Week

(Charlotte, NC) -- It's Black Restaurant Week in the Queen City. The nonprofit Black Business Owners of Charlotte is encouraging the community to head out to taste local cuisine at Black-owned eateries throughout the week. Organizers say not as many businesses were able to participate this year due to COVID effects on staff. Nine Black-owned restaurants are offering deals as part of the special week.

Some CMS Teachers To Receive Less On Check

(Charlotte, NC) -- Paychecks will be a bit less for some CMS teachers soon. WSOC-TV reports the district was supposed to send out a 750-dollar COVID-19 stipend earlier this year, but some employees received double. It affected just over 300-teachers. The school system advised those affected last week that the extra 750-dollars will be coming out of upcoming paychecks.

Interstate Bridge Repairs Wrapping Up Near Statesville

(Statesville, NC) -- Repairs to I-40 near Statesville could be complete today. Road crews first came out Friday when a small chunk of the interstate fell at the Beulah Road Bridge. WSOC-TV reports the patched-up portion of the road will be tested today in hopes of re-opening. Westbound lanes have been closed in the meantime.

Pedestrian Killed While Laying In Road

(Charlotte, NC) -- Impairment may be to blame for a deadly pedestrian wreck in west Charlotte. The CMPD says a driver struck a man lying in the middle of Queen City Drive early Sunday morning. The woman told officers she attempted to swerve around the man, but it was too late. Toxicology reports from the victim are pending.

Panthers Lose, Hornets Win

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte's pro sports teams are moving in opposite directions. The Panthers' dropped their fourth game in a row yesterday with a 25-to-three defeat at the hands of the New York Giants. Quarterback Sam Darnold was benched during the game, but is still expected to start this weekend. On the hard court, the Hornets beat the Nets yesterday to start the season with three-straight wins.

Fight In Shopping Mall Food Court Sends Hundreds Fleeing From Imaginary Shots Fired

(Durham, NC) -- A fight inside a shopping mall in Durham Sunday sparked widespread panic amid fears that gunshots had been fired. In the end four people were injured as hundreds ran for cover. It happened around 3:25 p.m. at the food court on the second floor of Southpoint Mall. Police say the brawl created loud noises as suspects slammed tables and chairs to the floor, however, there was no evidence of gunshots actually being fired. Authorities say two people were injured in the fight and two others were hurt in the stampede.

Man Shoots And Kills Two Teenage Boys Who Broke Into His Fayetteville Home

(Fayetteville, NC) -- Police in Fayetteville are investigating the deaths of two teenagers who were shot to death by a resident during a home invasion. It happened over the weekend inside an apartment in the 6400 block of Brookstone Lane. Officers responding to the call said they were notified by an adult male that he had shot two people who had broken into his home. After they arrived, both were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims were identified as 19-year old Hunter Markham of Fayetteville and a 17-year old juvenile whose identity was not released. No word on if any charges will be filed.

Protest Rally Planned Outside General Assembly To Demand Apology Or Resignation From Mark Robinson

(Raleigh, NC) -- Hundreds of protesters are expected to gather outside the North Carolina General Assembly in Raleigh this evening to call for an apology or the resignation of Lt. Governor Mark Robinson. This after a video surfaced on social media showing Robinson referring to teachings about homosexuality and transgender studies as "Filth." Robinson has so-far refused to apologize or resign. The protest and rally is set to get underway at 4:30 pm.

Wake County To Start Offering COVID-19 Booster Shots Today

(Wake County, NC) -- Starting today, all three COVID-19 booster shots will be made available at Wake County health care facilities. Anyone age 65-and older, or those with underlying health conditions that places them at increased risk of illness are eligible. Those wanting to receive a booster shot will need to make an appointment at one of Wake County's five health care clinics.

The 2021 North Carolina State Fair Is Now In The Books

(Raleigh, NC) -- Sunday was the last day of the annual North Carolina State Fair. Organizers say total attendance for the 10-day event attracted over 720-thousand people. They also said this past weekend was the busiest of the entire 2021 Fair, as families crowded west Raleigh for a final chance to enjoy the traditional and new attractions. It was also a chance for vendors to make up for deep losses from last year's State Fair, which was cancelled because of COVID-19.

Two Killed, Child Hospitalized After Clemmons Crash

(Clemmons, NC) -- Two people are dead, and a child is badly hurt, after a car accident in Clemmons. It happened around 6 p.m. Saturday on Frye Bridge and Franklin roads. Forty-four-year-old Billy Ray Rothrock and 36-year-old Crystal Dillon were killed, and Dillon's child was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Troopers say their car crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a Jeep head-on. The people in the Jeep are okay.

Man Found Dead In Jerry King Park

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A homicide investigation is underway in Winston-Salem where a man was found dead at Jerry King Park. The body of 49-year-old Timothy O'Neal Little was found Sunday morning on the 47-hundred block of Ogburn Avenue. Police say he appeared to have been shot. Police have not yet identified a suspect or a possible motive in the case.

Winston-Salem Police Officer Dies

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- The Winston-Salem Police Department is announcing the death of an officer. Sergeant Michael McDonald passed away at the age of 49. He was a 25-year veteran of the department. Both the Winston-Salem Police Department and the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office offered their condolences over the weekend. It's not clear how the officer died.

Prisoner Accused Of Stealing Dump Truck Arrested

(Randolph Co., NC) -- A prisoner accused of stealing a dump truck in Randolph County is back behind bars. D-P-S says 53-year-old Richard Mundy was working at an off-prison assignment Thursday when he stole the dump truck. He was seen walking southbound on Randleman Road, near Hockett Dairy, on Saturday and arrested. Mundy was serving time for a 2004 robbery conviction.

Greensboro P-D Respond To Shooting

(Greensboro, NC) -- Two people are recovering from gunshot wounds in Greensboro. Police responded to North Benbow Road and East Market Street Saturday night. They found two victims who had been shot. They were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police did not say who shot them or what prompted the shooting. An investigation is ongoing.
