(Rutherford County, NC) -- Details are emerging into an investigation of a Rutherford County man who claims he's killed four people. Daniel Printz was initially arrested last fall on weapons on theft charges, but has not been charged with murder. A search warrant unsealed this week reveals Printz is allegedly connected to missing women from Charlotte and Greenville.

Duke Energy Progress Raises Rates

(Asheville, NC) -- Rates are going up again for Duke Energy Progress customers. An extra dollar-per-one-thousand-kilowatt hours is being added, effective this week. Customers are already feeling the brunt of two other increases in December of last year.

Fares Remain Same For Asheville Transit

(Asheville, NC) -- No plans are in place to increase fares for Asheville public transportation. WLOS-TV reports Asheville Rides Transit isn't going to charge more for trips since the city is providing fuel. There's been no change despite rising gas prices that have risen to over four-dollars-a-gallon. The state average is right around four-15.

Suspect Charged For Waynesville Catalytic Converter Thefts

(Haywood County, NC) -- A suspect is being tied for a string of catalytic converter thefts in Haywood County. The 35-year-old man was already in jail for other charges when investigators tied him to 20 cases in Waynesville over the last 15-months. He's now been charged with 40 additional felony counts.

Asheville Residents Petitioning Against Merrimon Avenue Changes

(Asheville, NC) -- Hundreds of Asheville residents are looking for more information about a major road project. The North Carolina Department of Transportation is planning to reduce a portion of Merrimon Avenue down to two travel lanes. A center turn lane and bicycle lanes will also be added to the roadway. WLOS-TV reports there are now several petitions from different groups either opposed to the project or looking for more information.

Search Underway For Teen's Shooting Death

(Charlotte, NC) -- The search is continuing for suspects in the shooting of two CMS students. Investigators say a 14-year-old was killed and a 13-year-old was injured at the Southside Homes apartment complex early Tuesday night. The teen who died reportedly attended Randolph Road Middle School. One CMPD officer told WBTV that they're not receiving much cooperation from neighbors in the area.

CMS Hosts Safety Discussion

(Charlotte, NC) -- Safety is taking priority in discussions with CMS officials. The district held its first engagement session last night called Let's Talk About Safety. The discussions are meant as a way to encourage open dialogue about safety with community members, families and students. A CMS middle school student was shot to death earlier this week.

Charlotte Gas Prices Slow To Drop As Oil Costs Fall

(Charlotte, NC) -- Gas prices around Charlotte are slower to dip as the price of oil drops. Triple-A reports that's a normal thing and justified for gas stations, which don't want to drop prices too soon or else face an operating loss. The cost around metro Charlotte has dropped three-cents since reaching an all-time high of four-19 last Friday. Oil fell to 96-dollars-a-barrel yesterday.

Union County Inmate Accused Of Murder In Overdose Death

(Union County, NC) -- A Union County inmate is charged in the overdose death of a woman. The sheriff's office is accusing the suspected drug trafficker of giving the victim fentanyl-laced pills in December. He remains behind bars on an additional charge of second-degree murder.

Garth Brooks Returning To Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- A country music legend is returning to the Queen City. Garth Brooks has been forced to cancel several planned tours since the beginning of the pandemic, including his first show in Charlotte in nearly a quarter-of-a-century. Hornets Move Ahead Of Hawks After Win

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Hornets are back even for the season. Charlotte took down Atlanta 116-to-106 at the Spectrum Center last night. The win pulled the Hornets back to 500 and above the Hawks for ninth place in the Eastern Conference standings, which is still good enough for a play-in game ahead of the playoffs. It marks Charlotte's third-straight win.

Authorities Looking For Suspects Who Fired Into Goldsboro Mobile Home, Killing A 14-Year Old Boy

(Goldsboro, NC) -- Authorities in Goldsboro are investigating an apparent drive-by shooting that killed a 14-year old boy inside a mobile home. It happened around 4:o'clock Wednesday morning at the Tanglewood Mobile Home Park off Central Heights Road. Investigators say as many as seven shots were fired into the trailer. The victim, identified as Tavorje' Taylor, was one of five siblings and was also a student at Eastern Wayne Middle School. Police have not determined if the child was targeted, or if it was a random attack. No suspects have been arrested.

Cooper To Talk About Next Step In COVID Fight Later Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- Governor Roy Cooper is scheduled to hold a news briefing today to discuss North Carolina's future plans for responding to another possible surge in COVID-19 cases. This comes as the State Health Department reported 15-hundred-19 new cases Wednesday, up from 649 the day before. And at least 799-people were in the hospital yesterday, a decrease if 33-from Tuesday's total. With subvariant cases on the rise in Europe and China, many North Carolina doctors are worried North Carolina could be caught with its guard down.

H5N1 Avian Flu Spreading Among Wild Birds In North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) -- State wildlife officials have confirmed cases of bird flu in four North Carolina counties. According to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the deadly strain of H5N1 Avian Influenza likely came from Europe by migrating waterfowl. The agency reported Wednesday that at least four wild birds have died from the virus in Hyde, Carteret, Wake and Dare counties. The numbers include one bald eagle in Dare County. The disease kills about 75-percent of the birds exposed to it.

Cooper Signs Executive Order Creating Joint Cybersecurity Task Force In North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) -- Governor Roy Cooper has signed an Executive Order formally establishing a Joint Cybersecurity Task Force. Cooper said the move comes in the wake of increased cybersecurity incidents against American information technology networks and critical infrastructure. North Carolina's Task Force will be made up of IT experts whose goal will be to protect state and local government agencies, as well as educational entities like schools and universities.

VP Harris Announces Grant For HBCU's Who've Received Bomb Threats

(Washington, DC) -- Vice President Kamala Harris has announced a new grant program for the more than 50-Historically Black Colleges and Universities that received bomb threats earlier this year. Several of those schools were in North Carolina. Funds from the Project School Emergency Response to Violence Program, would enhance campus security and provide mental health resources for institutions that have experienced a violent or traumatic incident. The amount of funding will range from 50-to-100 thousand dollars for affected HBCU's.

UNC Takes On Marquette In First Round Of NCAA Tournament Today

(Ft. Worth, TX) -- First round action of the men's NCAA Tournament gets underway this afternoon in Ft. Worth, when North Carolina takes on Marquette in the East Region. The eighth seeded Tar Heels will bring an overall 24-9 record into the contest against the Golden Eagles, who were 19-12 during the regular season. UNC lost to Wisconsin in the first round of the Tournament last year. Coach Hubert Davis is hoping for a whole new post season experience this year. Tip off is set for around 4:30 pm.
