WNC Schools Under Bomb Threats
(Henderson County, NC) -- Bomb threats are causing problems in western North Carolina schools. Students at North Henderson High and Apple Valley Middle schools in Henderson County were sent home early Wednesday morning after a threat was called in to the 911 center. Students sheltered in place after a bomb threat at Transylvania High School yesterday as well. Classes resumed after noon.
Minority-Owned Businesses On Rise
(Asheville, NC) -- The number of minority-owned businesses is on a rise in North Carolina. The North Carolina Business Council reports numbers have tripled in the last two-decades. WLOS-TV says that number has reached 100 in the Asheville area. Overall, the number of businesses rose in Asheville by 200 from 2020 to 2021.
Snow Possible In WNC Overnight
(Asheville, NC) -- Springtime snow is making its way to the mountains. The National Weather Service says rain could turn into snow overnight into Saturday morning in several counties. Accumulation might reach up to an inch in counties bordering Tennessee. Wind gusts are expected to reach above 20-miles-an-hour today.
Police Still Looking For Asheville Suspect After 2020 Murder
(Asheville, NC) -- The search is continuing for an Asheville murder suspect a year-and-a-half later. The Citizen-Times reports the police department has been looking for Dionate Whitson since 17-year-old Teylyn McAplin was shot to death in November 2020. It was announced in late March that U.S. Marshals took over the case. Gang members from multiple cities are suspected of helping Whitson hide.
Drug Overdoses Spike In Buncombe County This Week
(Asheville, NC) -- Drug overdoses have surged in Buncombe County this week. Health and Human Services officials say calls came in for at least eight overdoses within a 48-hour period. Officials believe most involve drugs laced with fentanyl. Less than two months ago, a half-dozen people overdosed at the Omni Grove Park Inn.
Bear Destroys SUV In Buncombe County
(Buncombe County, NC) -- A bear is to blame for the destruction of a car in Buncombe County this week. One resident told WLOS-TV she discovered the bear inside her SUV early Thursday morning. The animal smashed a hole through the windshield to escape. The woman speculates the bear may have been inside for six-hours. No one was injured.
Monroe Council Votes Out Member
(Monroe, NC) -- A Monroe City Councilmember is being forced out of office. The board voted to kick out Angelia James yesterday following an incident with police last fall. She was accused of threatening to fire police officers at a Fairfield Inn nearly seven-months ago. Members previously censured her shortly after it happened.
Governor Visits Charlotte Child Care Business
(Charlotte, NC) -- North Carolina's governor is using a Charlotte business as a way to promote affordable child care. Roy Cooper visited Nana's Place in northeast Charlotte early Thursday afternoon. The business is one of four-thousand that has taken advantage of the North Carolina Child Care Stabilization Grants, which help provide affordable child care for working class families. The funding comes from the American Rescue Plan Act.
Panthers' Coach Joins Racial Discrimination Suit
(Charlotte, NC) -- A Carolina Panthers coach is joining a discrimination lawsuit against the NFL. Steve Wilks claims race played a role in his firing from the Arizona Cardinals four-years ago. He currently serves as a secondary coach and defensive pass game coordinator for the Panthers. Wilks' claims are part of a larger suit filed by Miami head coach Brian Flores.

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte-based brewery is taking another brewing company to court. Sycamore Brewing claims that California-based Stone Brewing has been using its trademarked slogan Keep It Juicy. Sycamore allegedly registered the trademark for the phrase last year.

Review Board Votes In Favor Of Teacher After Police Detainment
(Charlotte, NC) -- A citizens' review board is showing support for a Charlotte teacher wrongly detained by police. It was last June when officers pulled guns and detained Jasmin Horne, only to find out her name was similar to a suspect they were searching for. The CMPD told NBC Charlotte earlier this year that the officers' actions were within policy. The review board voted unanimously in Horne's favor this week.

WSOC-TV reports The Waterman opened yesterday after owners poured one-million-dollars into the Bailey Road location. The Cowboy restaurant previously occupied the space. Durham Man Jailed After Shooting Two People And Staging An Eight Hour Standoff With Police
(Durham, NC) -- An eight hour-long standoff with Durham police finally ended late Thursday night with the suspect being taken into custody. This, after he shot two people earlier in the day, killing one of them. It happened at the Lakemoor Apartment complex on Avon Lake Drive. Officers responded to a call of shots fired and arrived to find a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was taken to a nearby hospital. Investigators did not reveal how the shooting suspect was connect to the two victims.
Two Deputies Shot And Wounded In An Exchange Of Gunfire With A Sanford Man
(Lee County, NC) -- Two Lee County Sheriff's Deputies had to be hospitalized Thursday after being injured in a shootout with a suspect in Sanford. It happened around 4:pm after authorities received a call from a woman who said she had been assaulted by her husband at a home on Olivia Road. When officers arrived on the scene the suspect, identified as Shaheem Williams, came out and began shooting at law enforcement, wounding two of them. The suspect later gave up his weapon and surrendered to police.
Stein And Other AG's Calling On Big Banks To Eliminate Overdraft Fees
(Raleigh, NC) -- Attorney General Josh Stein has joined AG's from several other states in calling on some of the nation's largest banks to eliminate overdraft fees. This, after a recent report found that the big banks profited more than 12-billion dollars in overdraft fees in 2020, mostly from customers who earned less than 50-thousand dollars a year. In a letter sent to the CEO's of Chase, Wells Fargo and U.S. bank, the Attorney's General asked that the overdraft fees be eliminated by June.
NC Poultry Farmers Warned That Deadly Bird Flu Could Wipe Out Their Entire Flocks
(Raleigh, NC) -- The rapidly spreading Bird Flu in North Carolina has now infected an estimated 375-thousand turkeys across the state, resulting in mass euthanizations. That, from state agriculture officials who say the highly contagious and fatal Avian Flu has mostly been transmitted by wild waterfowl. Officials warn that once detected in domestic birds, including chickens, turkeys and ducks, an entire poultry flock can be wiped out. Virologists are urging state poultry farmers to isolate their domestic birds from wild pheasants, quails, ducks and geese.
Canes Advance To The Playoffs With Victory Over The Buffalo Sabres

Man Who Attacked Security Guard With A Machete Still On The Run
(Raleigh, NC) -- Authorities in Raleigh are searching for a man who attacked a security guard with a machete. According to RPD, the incident happened around 7:30 pm inside Advanced Community Health on Rock Quarry Road. A preliminary report said the suspect was ordered to leave the facility because it was after hours. During a verbal exchange with the security guard, the man pulled out a machete and struck the guard on the arm. He was transported to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The suspect fled the scene on foot.
