The Jackson County sheriff's office says a three-year-old girl was carried away over Whitewater Falls in Cashiers Sunday afternoon. Search crews recovered the child's body early Monday morning. Her family was reportedly visiting in the area from Pennsylvania.
Polk County Schools Threatened On Social Media
(Polk County, NC) -- Polk County investigators are looking into details of a school social media threat. School administrators say a threat was made against Polk County Early College on Sunday, but determined staff and students weren't in danger. It comes after schools in Henderson, Transylvania and Rutherford counties came under threat last week.
Congressional GOP Candidates Debate Minus Cawthorn
(Fletcher, NC) -- A handful of GOP candidates are getting ready for the May congressional primary in western North Carolina. WLOS-TV reports seven Republicans in the District Eleven race took part in a debate last night at the Ag Center in Fletcher. Incumbent Madison Cawthorn did not take part. One candidate noted that Cawthorn has one of the worst voting participation records in Washington, DC. The primary is coming up May 17th.
Asheville Police Looking For Robbery Suspect
(Buncombe County, NC) -- Asheville police are continuing to look for a robbery suspect. investigators say two masked men pepper-sprayed a woman on South Tunnel Road last weekend before taking her purse. One suspect was arrested for assault and robbery. Another remains on the run.
Gas Prices Much Lower Than One-Week Ago
(Buncombe County, NC) -- Gas prices in North Carolina are quite a bit lower than one-month ago. Triple-A reports the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded is at three-86, which is more than 30-cents lower than this same time last month. The average in the Asheville area remains eleven-cents above the state average. The cost for gas nationally remains above four-dollars.
State Launches Campaign Against Speeding
(Raleigh, NC) -- Law enforcement officials are cracking down on speeding across the state. The governor's office is launching the Speed A Little, Lose A Lot campaign through Sunday. The DOT says speeding played a factor in 25-percent of fatal crashes in North Carolina last year.
City Council Approves Charlotte Affordable Housing
(Charlotte, NC) -- More affordable housing is coming to Charlotte. The city council voted yesterday to use over 12-million-dollars from the Housing Trust Fund to build over 600 units. Members also signed off on a 92-unit development across from Camp North End. A few of those will be slated as affordable housing as well.

The Airports Council International revealed a report yesterday that showed Charlotte served over 43-million passengers last year, which brought the airport back to the fifth busiest in the world. Numbers dropped in 2020 due to effects from the pandemic.
Charlotte-Bound Passenger Faces Large FAA Fine
(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte-bound passenger in 2021 is facing a record fine. The FAA announced this week that a woman should pay nearly 82-thousand-dollars for trouble she allegedly caused on a flight from Dallas-Fort Worth last July. Investigators say she hit and headbutted a flight attendant on the American Airlines plane.
Baby Safe After Alleged Wingate Abduction
(Wingate, NC) -- A baby is safe after an alleged abduction in Wingate. Investigators say a one-year-old was taken Sunday night by her mother, who doesn't have legal custody. The girl was since found safe, while the mother is at-large. She's been identified as 22-year-old Jhamira Bennett.
Homicide Investigated In Chester County
(Chester County, SC) -- Chester County deputies are looking for the suspect in a weekend homicide. A man was shot to death in the Eureka Mill neighborhood late Saturday night. Investigators told NBC Charlotte it marks the county's third homicide of the year. There were five in all of 2021.
Fire Breaks Out In East Charlotte

Driver Involved In Crash With GoRaleigh Bus Dies
(Raleigh, NC) -- One of the people injured in an accident between a GoRaleigh bus and a car has died. Another victim remains hospitalized in serious condition. It happened Sunday on Garner Road in front of the Christ Our King Community Church. Police say the collision occurred as the bus driver was attempting to make a left turn. The impact was so powerful that one of the occupants inside the car was partially ejected. The bus driver was cited for failure to yield causing serious bodily injury.
Talk Has Begun To Bring A New Commuter Rail System To Triangle
(Raleigh, NC) -- Triangle area transportation leaders have unveiled plans to bring a new commuter rail system to central North Carolina. The rail project would connect Durham, Wake and Johnston counties. At a meeting of the Wake County Commission Monday, GoRaleigh CEO Chuck Latucca told members that a feasibility study is already underway and that the plans call for up to 12-thousand commuters per day would ride a 43-mile rail system with 15-stations between Durham and Clayton.
Investigators Find A Major Clue In Fatal Motorcycle Gang Shootout In Fayetteville
(Fayetteville, NC) -- Police in Fayetteville have announced the location of a Ford Raptor pickup truck, which was being sought in connection with a shooting last month that injured six people, three of them fatally. The shooting erupted during a fight between motorcycle gang members in the parking lot of the Baymont Ramada Inn on Owens Drive. Authorities say they are still trying to find a Jeep Patriot SUV, who's rear windows were shot out during the violent incident.
Durham County Authorities Looking For Suspects Who Shot At Two Sheriff's Deputies
(Durham, NC) -- The Durham County Sheriff's Office is asking the public for help in locating the suspects who fired multiple shots at two sheriff's deputies over the weekend. Fortunately, they were not injured. It happened Saturday in the area of Dearborn Drive and Keystone Place, as the officers were conducting an investigation in an unmarked vehicle. This comes as nine people were shot in Durham over a three day period. Three of the victims were killed.

In a statement released Monday, the University confirmed that Smith will be leaving to take a job as an assistant at Louisville. Smith, who was born and raised in Louisville, is also the son of Derek Smith, who was a member of the Cardinal's national championship team in 1980.
Winston-Salem Begins 'Cure Violence' Program
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Some 750-thousand-dollars in federal coronavirus relief funds will soon help pay for anti-crime programs in Winston-Salem. The 'Cure Violence' effort targets violent crime areas and sends caseworkers who know the areas to help. Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines says the goal is to form connections and intervene with people who are most likely to commit the crimes. The program will initially last three years.

Pennsylvania 3-Year-Old Dies After Being Swept Over NC Waterfall
(Jackson County, NC) -- North Carolina officials say a three-year-old Pennsylvania girl has been killed after she was swept over a waterfall. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office says in a news release that Nevaeh Jade Newswanger of Denver, Pennsylvania, which is near Lancaster, had been visiting the waterfall with family members. The incident happened just before 6:00 p.m. Sunday night; her body was recovered early Monday morning.
Greensboro Man Opens Up About Plane Crash In New Jersey
(Greensboro, NC) -- A Greensboro businessman says he's grateful to have walked away from the fiery wreckage of his airplane crash in New Jersey. Zack Guthrie who is 53 and owner of a consulting business, crashed his small plane in a residential area April 4th. He tells WGHP-TV, "It was a miracle to not hit anybody on the ground, not to kill anybody and to be able to walk away from it." He says he does plan on getting back in the air soon.
Gas Continues A Downward Trend In Greensboro
(Greensboro, NC) -- The price of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in the Greensboro area has dropped quite a bit in the past three weeks. An analysis by Gas Buddy dot com shows the average cost currently sits at three-dollars, 81 cents per gallon. That's nearly a ten-cent drop from last week and a little more than 36 cents cheaper than a month ago.
