High River Levels Disrupt Outdoor Business
(Asheville, NC) -- Last week's rains are causing problems for area outdoor adventure businesses. The operations manager at Asheville's Zen Tubing told WLOS-TV yesterday that early rainfall last week caused high levels on the French Broad River through the holiday weekend. Around one-thousand reservations were cancelled as a result. The business is planning to be able to open within the next couple of days.
Fire Destroys Small Candler Business
(Candler, NC) -- Fire is to blame for the destruction of a small business in Candler. WLOS-TV reports flames broke out at Candler's Best Indoor Yard Sale on Smokey Park Highway yesterday. The owner was out of town at the time. The building was condemned and there are no plans to re-open.
Gas Prices Holding Steady In WNC
(Asheville, NC) -- Gas prices around Asheville are continuing to hover right around the same mark over the past few days. Triple-A is reporting an average price for a gallon of regular unleaded at four-40, where it's been for at least a week. The mountain region remains the most expensive in the state. The average price nationwide has also been stuck around four-60 for a number of days.
Canton Business Re-Opens After Flooding
(Canton, NC) -- A Canton business is finally back open after last summer's damaging flooding. Pigeon River Outfitters lost its ticket sales building, kayaks, tubes and more when heavy rains washed over the region in August 2021. The owner told WLOS-TV the flooding caused 200-thousand-dollars in damage, ticket sales not included. The business was able to open again over Memorial Day weekend.
Another Earthquake Registers In Catawba County
(Catawba County, NC) -- Earthquakes are frequently rattling one part of North Carolina. The United States Geological Survey reported a one-point-eight magnitude quake in Catawba County early Monday morning. Two other small earthquakes registered around Catawba over the past 20-days as well. None were strong enough to do any damage.
Temps Heat Up In Mountains
(Asheville, NC) -- It's going to feel more like summer over the next couple of days in western North Carolina. The National Weather Service is calling for temperatures to climb into the upper 80s today and tomorrow. That comes out to roughly ten-degrees above average. The threat of severe thunderstorms is also moving out of the region to make way for sunny skies.
Baby, Father Killed In Monroe Shooting
(Monroe, NC) -- A tragic shooting is being investigated in Monroe. Witnesses told police someone opened fire at a family cookout on Morrow Avenue Sunday night, killing a man and his four-month-old son. Police Chief Bryan Gilliard called it a senseless act of violence. A five-thousand-dollar reward has been offered for information leading to an arrest of the suspect.
Flight Bound For Rome Returns To CLT
(Charlotte, NC) -- An international flight out of Charlotte is leaving today after mechanical issues were reported. An American Airlines spokesperson told NBC Charlotte that flight 720 to Rome departed CLT last night, but pilots returned due to unspecified problems. The plane made it back to the gate on its own power. Passengers are expected to head to Rome this afternoon.
Driver Charged After Wreck That Injured Seven Kids
(Charlotte, NC) -- Charges have been filed in a deadly crash that injured seven kids in west Charlotte. The CMPD says the children weren't properly restrained in an SUV when they were hit by a car at Freedom Drive and Toddville Road Sunday night. The driver of the car was allegedly impaired and was killed in the crash. Officers charged the SUV driver with DWI and misdemeanor child abuse.
Two Hurt In Shelby Shooting
(Shelby, NC) -- Shelby police are looking for a suspect in a double-shooting. Two people were reportedly hurt while they drove along Highway 226 late Monday morning. Injuries weren't considered to be life-threatening.
Gas Prices Steady In Charlotte
(Charlotte, NC) -- Gas prices around the Queen City are staying steady. Triple-A reports a price for a gallon of regular unleaded remained around four-36 for the Charlotte metro area yesterday. It's hovered around that price for at least a week. That's just above the statewide average.
Shelby Organization Building Cottages For Vets
(Shelby, NC) -- An organization in Shelby is helping tackle homelessness among veterans. Organizers behind The Cottages at Valor told WSOC-TV they plan to build over 70 cottages on just under 20-acres. The price of rent, water and utilities could be as low as 350-dollars-a-month. Volunteers and investors are needed to help with the project.
Hurricanes Fall In Game Seven
(Raleigh, NC) -- The season is over for the Hurricanes. Carolina fell to the New York Rangers on the ice at PNC Arena in Raleigh last night. The six-two win in game seven sends the Rangers on to the conference finals. The Hurricanes' loss marked the team's only defeat at home during the playoffs.
Driver Shot And Killed After Pulling Gun On North Carolina State Trooper
(Chatham County, NC) -- Authorities in Chatham County are investigating a Memorial Day shooting involving a North Carolina State Trooper, in which a suspect was killed. It happened around 4:45 pm in the town of Siler City near the intersection of Harmony and Solo Drive. A preliminary police report of the incident says the shooting occurred after the Trooper pulled over a white pickup truck and the driver brandished a gun. Twenty-one-year old Mark Anthony Diaz was transported to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The officer has since been placed on administrative leave.
Suspected Molotov Cocktail Thrower Arrested In Cumberland County
(Cumberland County, NC) -- A suspect seen on surveillance video throwing Molotov cocktails at two separate church buildings in Cumberland County, has been captured. The attacks happened Sunday morning about 30-minutes apart while parishioners were inside worshiping at Grays Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Hope Mills and New Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Fayetteville. There were no injuries and the damage was minimal. 57-year old Terry Wayne Raeford of Fayetteville, was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with multiple violations involving incendiary devices, including acquisition and possession of weapons of mass death and destruction.
Still No Suspects In Shootout In Front Of Gas Station In Henderson
(Henderson, NC) -- Police in Henderson are continuing their search for several suspects wanted in a wild shootout at a gas station. It happened Saturday afternoon outside Gate City Foods on West Andrews Avenue, just off I-85. Surveillance video shows at least 4-men firing multiple rounds at each other. One victim was wounded in the foot. Stray bullets also shattered doors and windows in store, as well as penetrated an apartment building across the street. So-far, no arrests have been made.
Bill To Ban Teachings About Sex In Grades K-3 To Be Voted On This Week
(Raleigh, NC) -- Later this week, members of the North Carolina Senate will take up a vote on a controversial bill that would place restrictions on how subjects dealing with sexual orientation and gender identity are taught in public schools. House Bill 755 would ban the teaching or discussion of subjects concerning sex in grades K-3. Critics of the Republican sponsored 'Parents Bill of Rights' bill say it's another version of Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' legislation.
North Carolina Democrats Proposing 200-Dollar Gas Tax Rebate To Help Ease Pain At The Pump
(Raleigh, NC) -- Democrats in the North Carolina Senate have introduced a bill that would offer a gas tax rebate to resident drivers. The Gas Tax Rebate Act of 2022, would provide a one-time 200-dollar rebate to drivers who were legal residents of the state by March 31st, 2022. Those eligible to receive the stipend must be at least 18-years of age and have a valid North Carolina driver's license. The distribution would be in the form of checks or debit cards. The cost of the rebate would be around one-point-three billion dollars.

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Carolina Hurricanes playoff season came to an abrupt end last night, with a heartbreaking 6-2 loss to the New York Rangers. Hampered by injuries to both Antti Raanta and Seth Jarvis, the Canes just didn't have enough to fend off the Rangers power plays at PNC Arena. It was the first loss on home ice during the entire playoff series. New York advances to play Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference final.
Two Virginia Women Die after Being Hit on U.S. 29
(Greensboro, NC) -- Two women from Virginia were hit and killed as they were standing outside their disabled car Sunday on U.S. 29. Greensboro Police say their car was hit by a 29-year-old Greensboro man, who crashed into the women's car. Ciealita Thornton and Lakeisha Woody both of Danville died as a result of their injuries. Police say they continue to investigate what happened.
Three Injured in Greensboro Shooting
(Greensboro, NC) -- Police say three people are expected to be okay after they were injured in a shooting Monday night. It happened in the 200 block of South Street in Greensboro. Lt. Governor Under Fire For Speaking at NRA Convention
(Houston, Texas) -- North Carolina's lieutenant governor is coming under fire for speaking at the NRA's annual convention in Houston. Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson attended the meeting over the weekend in spite of pleas from parents and fellow politicians to reconsider. In a ten-minute speech Friday, he called for schools to be more secure in light of the Uvalde mass shooting. Robinson also said the shooting left him heartbroken and that schools deserve just as much security as places like airports.
Woman Arrested for Making False Shooting Threats Against School Bus
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Winston-Salem woman has been arrested reportedly after making threats to shoot up a school bus. She was heard on a student-rider's speaker phone making threats to shoot up the bus last week. A post on the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office home page says the bus driver immediately called in the threat. Deputies went to the school and found it wasn't credible but arrested the woman. Lasheika Marie Ziglar faces charges of felonious false reporting concerning mass violence on educational property.
North Carolina Greensboro Advances to NCAA Regionals
(Greensboro, NC) -- North Carolina Greensboro has routed top-seeded Wofford 12-2 in seven innings Sunday to advance to the N-C-A-A regionals. Hunter Shuey threw a six-hitter in Greenville, S.C., to win help his team win the Southern Conference title. Shuey, a freshman right-hander, held the Terriers to no earned runs, didn't walk anyone and struck out four in the game -- his sixth start of the year. Greensboro advances to the Statesboro (Georgia) Regional to face Georgia Southern Friday at 7 p.m.
