Tillis And Burr On Record As Supporting Proposed New Gun Legislation

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina Republican Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis were among 10-GOP lawmakers who joined nine Democrats and one independent Sunday, in supporting a bipartisan agreement to toughen restrictions on gun control. If approved by the House and Senate, it would allow states to enact "Red Flag" laws and provide closer reviews of prospective gun buyers under the age of 21. The legislation also calls for billions of additional federal dollars to be spent mental health and school safety.

Mass Demonstration Planned For Tonight In Raleigh Against "Parents Bill of Rights" Bill

(Raleigh, NC) -- Dozens of protesters, led by Equality NC, are scheduled to hold a rally in downtown Raleigh this evening to oppose the so-called "Parents Bill of Rights" bill currently being debated in the North Carolina General Assembly. House Bill 755 would ban the teaching of LGBTQ issues in grades K-3. It would also allow parents to review classroom subjects and object to materials related to sexual orientation in those grades. The meeting starts at 5:00-pm at Bicentennial Park.

Police Looking For Suspect In Winston-Salem Shooting

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Winston-Salem Police are investigating a shooting that left one person injured Sunday. When officers arrived at the area of 17th Street and Liberty Street, they found the victim with one gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No suspect information has been released yet.

Vandals Destroyed Bathrooms At Wake Forest Park

(Wake Forest, NC) -- Wake Forest police are asking the public's help finding suspects who vandalized the restrooms at E. Carroll Joyner Park on Harris Road. Some time late Saturday or early Sunday, the suspects used rocks to shatter glass mirrors and damage doors on the restroom. Toilets were stuffed with toilet paper and other times and sinks were smashed and broken. Anyone with any information is asked to call Wake Forest Police immediately.

Former Spring Lake Official Accused Of Embezzling Hundreds Of Thousands Of Dollars

(Spring Lake, NC) -- The Town of Spring Lake's former finance director is facing federal embezzlement charges. Sixty-three-year-old Gay Cameron Tucker of Fayetteville was arrested on Friday, charged with embezzlement, bank fraud, and aggravated identity theft. According to reports, Tucker embezzled more than 500-thousand dollars from the town while serving as the finance director and accounting technician. The embezzled funds were split between payments to a senior living facility her husband was staying at and deposits into Tucker's personal accounts, according to court filings.

Masked Robber Hit A Winston-Salem Pizza Shop Saturday Night

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Police in Winston-Salem are circulating security footage of a local pizza shop robbery, hoping for a lead. Saturday night, a man with a T-shirt wrapped around his face walked into the Marco's Pizza on Reynolda Road and pulled a gun. He got away with an undisclosed amount of cash from the register. Police are asking anyone with any information on the robbery to come forward.

North Carolina Pest Control Company Looking To Study Cockroaches In Your Home

The Pest Informer is offering two-thousand dollars to the brave soul who allows them to release a hundred cockroaches inside their home. It's all in the name of research, the company says. Local School District Ditching Clear Backpack Initiative Due To Toxic Chemical Warning

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools is auctioning off 46-thousand clear backpacks it purchased this school year in response to increased violence in the area. The reason for the auction is that most of the backpacks contain a warning tag regarding toxic chemicals used in the making of the bags. The district indefinitely postponed the clear backpack initiative due to those warning labels. The district had invested 500-thousand dollars into the backpacks as a way to keep weapons off school campuses.

(Charlotte, NC) -- Students, teachers, parents, and community members continue to protest gun violence in Charlotte and beyond. Sunday, hundreds gathered for the "March for Our Lives" rally downtown. Many of the students and teachers involved in Sunday's march are calling for changes to gun laws before the start of the next school year. As the march was happening in Charlotte, meanwhile, a group of U.S. senators in D.C. were announcing a bipartisan proposal to combat gun violence across the country.

Another Charlotte Mortgage Company Cutting Staff Amid Increasing Rates

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte-based Wyndham Capital Mortgage is laying off dozens of employees this summer. According to documents filed last week, the mortgage company is laying off 38 employees at its Colony Road office by August 1st. Additionally, the company will cut ten fully remote employees who are working from outside the Carolinas. This isn't the first mortgage company to announce layoffs in the area as increasing rates continue to hurt the business.

Another Inmate At Mecklenburg Detention Has Died

(Charlotte, NC) -- The North Carolina Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of an inmate at the Mecklenburg Detention Center on Saturday. Forty-two-year-old Tommy Hucks of Charlotte was found unresponsive in his cell at about 9:45 a.m. Saturday. Jail medical staff was unable to revive Hucks and he was pronounced dead on the scene, though it is unclear the cause of death. Hucks is the seventh person to die in custody in the Mecklenburg facility over the past year.

Durham County Commission To Vote On Nearly 800--Million Dollar Budget Today

(Durham County, NC) -- The Durham County Board of Commissioners is expected to take up a vote today on a proposed 795-million dollar budget for the next fiscal year. That represents an eight percent increase over last year. The new budget also recommends a 10-million dollar increase in public school funding, for a total of 176-million. The budget also calls for a cost of living pay raise for county employees. However, property taxes will remain the same.

North Carolina Falls To Arkansas In Second Game Of Chapel Hill Super Regional

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- After two weather related delays because of lightning, the North Carolina Tar Heels men's baseball team fell to Arkansas Sunday in a 4-3 nail biting defeat. The loss brought an end to North Carolina's hopes of evening-up the best of three and forcing a third game for a chance to advance to the College World Series. But the Razorbacks went ahead in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off single by Brady Slavens to clinch the Chapel Hill Super Regional 2-0. The Tar Heels finished the season 42-22.

Texas Beats East Carolina In Game 3 To Advance To The World Series

(Greenville, NC) -- In Game 3 of the Greenville Super Regional last night, East Carolina lost to the Texas Longhorns 11-1. The victory punches the ticket to the College Baseball World Series for the 38th time for Texas. It was the closest the Pirates had ever come to making it to Omaha. After a nearly five hour weather delay, the game didn't resume until about 10:15 pm Sunday night. East Carolina finishes the season with a 46-21 record. Texas moves on to play Notre Dame later this week.
