Two Arrested After Device Explodes In Downtown Asheville
(Asheville, NC) -- Two suspects are facing charges in connection with an explosion in downtown Asheville. It was just after eleven Monday night when explosives were detonated at the site of the former Vance Monument. No one was injured. Police Chief David Zack said yesterday the suspects are the same two men spotted wearing armor and armed at a protest last week.
Buncombe County Superintendent Retiring
(Buncombe County, NC) -- Buncombe County Schools is transitioning into new leadership. Superintendent Dr. Tony Baldwin announced yesterday he plans to retire in November. He's served in the role since 2009 and has spent his career as an educator in Buncombe County. Associate superintendent Susanne Swanger is also retiring August 1st.
Asheville Open Begins 90th Edition
(Asheville, NC) -- Another Asheville Open tennis tournament is underway. WLOS-TV says two 90-year-olds ceremonially kicked off the 90th edition of the event at Aston Park Tennis Center in downtown yesterday. Around 450 people will play between now and Sunday.
Waynesville Apartment Project Stalls
(Waynesville, NC) -- A new apartment complex in Waynesville is on hold. The town planner told WLOS-TV that concerns over rising costs and recession fears were enough to halt work for the 60 apartments in the Hillside community. Neighbors previously showed concerned over water and sewer runoff at the property.
Over 40 Arrested In Henderson County Drug Operation
(Hendersonville, NC) -- Dozens of people were busted in a Henderson County drug operation. The sheriff's office says a six-month undercover investigation led to the arrests of more than 40 people. Five Henderson County drug houses and one in Greenville were shut down last Thursday. A suspected supplier of drugs that led to some overdoses is behind bars on a bond of close to two-million-dollars.
School Board Proposes Joint Effort On Playground
(Asheville, NC) -- Discussions are back on the table to rebuild a north Asheville playground. The Jones Park playground was torn down last fall after an unsatisfactory safety inspection. The Asheville School Board voted last week to try out negotiations with the city and Buncombe County on the construction and maintenance of a new playground. Around 300-thousand-dollars has been raised to help build it again.
Suspect Pleads Guilty In Murder Of Mount Holly Officer
(Mount Holly, NC) -- A man will be heading to prison for killing a Mount Holly police officer. Joshua Funk pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in connection to the December 2020 shooting death of Officer Tyler Herndon. Several officers had responded to the scene of a suspected break-in at the Mount Holly Car Wash when the shooting happened. Funk's sentence is expected to be life without parole.
Teen Killed In West Charlotte Homicide
(Charlotte, NC) -- A homicide is being investigated in west Charlotte. Officers found a 19-year-old shot to death at an apartment complex on Camp Greene Street late Tuesday afternoon. A witness told WSOC-TV he heard shots in the breezeway. The CMPD is working on getting surveillance footage.
CMPD Planning For Safety Ahead Of Pride Parade
(Charlotte, NC) -- Planning for safety is a top priority ahead of the Charlotte Pride Festival and Parade. The CMPD already had a strategy in place before the mass shooting at an Illinois Independence Day parade, but now officers are taking even more precautions. The department told WSOC-TV yesterday that uniformed and undercover officers will be out along the parade route, while investigators will also be monitoring a network of cameras in real-time. The parade is set for August 12th.
Drone Shot Down In Burke County
(Burke County, NC) -- Sheriff's investigators are looking for the person who shot down a drone in Burke County. The operator was flying the unmanned aircraft above his home when someone shot it down from the sky on Sunday, causing around three-thousand-dollars in damage. A report has been filed with the FAA. The suspect could potentially face felony charges.

Man Killed In Stanly County Trench Collapse
(Albemarle, NC) -- A deadly worksite accident is being investigated in Stanly County. A construction worker died after a trench collapsed on top of him Tuesday morning. He was on the site of a housing development near Hartley Farm Road, northeast of Charlotte. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration is taking a look into the incident.

Baby Dies; Two Adults Wounded In Shootout At Raleigh Apartment Complex
(Raleigh, NC) -- Police in Raleigh are investigating an overnight shooting that left a baby dead and two adults wounded. It happened after 10:pm at an apartment complex off Shanda Drive. Details of the incident were not immediately made available, however, an RPD source confirmed late last night, that one of the injured was also a suspect who exchanged gunfire with police. At last report both victims were being treated at a nearby hospital. No word on their conditions.

Police Looking For Gold Toyota Camry With Black Hood In Connection With Fatal Shooting On New Bern Avenue
(Raleigh, NC) -- Authorities in Raleigh are asking the public for help in locating a suspect wanted in connection with a fatal shooting on New Bern Avenue Tuesday. Police responded to a call of shots fired around 1:30 pm at the Exxon gas station. When they arrived they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead. Investigators say they are looking for a gold colored 4-door Toyota Camry with a black hood and chrome rims. Anyone with information is asked to contact Raleigh police.
City Of Garner Votes To Adopt Non-Discrimination Ordinance Protecting Members Of LGBTQ Community
(Garner, NC) -- Members of the Garner Town Council have voted to adopt Wake County's version of a 'Non-Discrimination Ordinance' that will provide enhanced protections for LGBTQ people in public and in the work place. The resolution, which was approved unanimously at Tuesday night's meeting, makes Garner the sixth municipality in Wake County to adopt the ordinance. Statewide, 20-cities have now passed similar Non-Discrimination Ordinances.
Raleigh Leaders Pass New Ordinance Banning Ownership Of Dangerous Wild Animals
(Raleigh, NC) -- The Raleigh City Council Tuesday, passed a new ordinance banning the ownership of wild animals within city limits. This comes in response to a Zebra Cobra snake escaping from its owner last year. By a 6-2 vote, the Council approved the resolution that will make it illegal to acquire and own, lions, tigers, venomous snakes, wolves, monkey's hybrids and crossbreeds. Current owners of wild animals will have to register them with Animal Control.
Bulls Take On Redbirds Again Tonight At The DBAP
(Durham, NC) -- The Durham Bulls will be back out at the DBAP tonight for a rematch against the Memphis Redbirds. Despite a bases loaded walk Monday night, the Redbirds held on to defeat the Bulls 6-4 in a Fourth of July classic. Over 10-thousand fans turned out to witness the event. Tonight's game gets underway at 6:35 pm.
