(Asheville, NC) -- A man accused of setting off an explosive device in downtown Asheville won't have to report back to jail. The Buncombe County District Attorney's Office requested bond for Duncan Small to be revoked this week after he allegedly made a Facebook post that his followers should start a riot. It came just after his release from jail on Monday. Small and another man allegedly lit an explosive and threw it at the remains of the Vance Monument on July 4th.
Cawthorn Drops Multi-Million-Dollar Lawsuit
(Haywood County, NC) -- Western North Carolina's Congressman is dropping a multi-million-dollar lawsuit. Madison Cawthorn was left paralyzed after a car wreck while on spring break in Florida eight-years ago. He previously sued the driver of the car for million in damages. WLOS-TV reports Cawthorn recently dropped the suit, but no reason was given in the court filing.
Firework Destroys Asheville Mailbox
(Asheville, NC) -- A mailbox explosion in West Asheville is being blamed on fireworks. The box outside a Pearson Bridge Road home was destroyed late Tuesday afternoon. WLOS-TV reports a witness spotted two young men stop and place an explosive inside. Asheville police stated yesterday it appears the suspects placed fireworks in the box.
Murder Suspect Spotted In Franklin
(Franklin, NC) -- A Georgia murder suspect could be in western North Carolina. The Macon County Sheriff's Office says the 45-year-old was spotted in surveillance footage staying at a motel in Franklin this week. He's accused of shooting his estranged wife to death in metro Atlanta last Sunday. It's possible he already made his way back into Georgia.
New College Building Opens In Henderson County
(Henderson County, NC) -- A new learning center is open at the Blue Ridge Community College campus in Henderson County. The nearly 80-thousand-square-foot Patton Building was unveiled at a ceremony on Tuesday. The 23-million-dollar project was first listed as a priority for the campus in 2019.

(Catawba County, NC) -- A former utilities director in Catawba County is heading to prison. A judge sentenced Barry Edwards to just over a year yesterday in connection to a kickback scheme. Court documents show that Edwards took gifts worth 30-thousand-dollars while conspiring with a contractor from 2012 to 2018. He had served as director since 1995.

Federal Court Orders State Health Insurance Coverage For Transgender People Reinstated
(Raleigh, NC) -- A health insurance plan for transgender state employees has been ordered reinstated after it was dropped in 2019. That, from the North Carolina state Treasurer's Office, which announced Wednesday that the order comes after a federal court ruled that refusal of coverage for transgender people was unconstitutional. According to State Treasurer Dale Powell, the reinstatement of "medically necessary services" will include hormone replacement therapy and surgeries.

Child Dies After Weekend Crash In Randolph County
(Trinity, NC) -- A child is dead after a weekend crash in Randolph County. State Highway Patrol say the six-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries yesterday after the wreck on I-85 near Finch Farm Road. Investigators think 41-year-old Natisha Poindexter was traveling at a high rate of speed southbound when she hit the back of an S-U-V. Both vehicles left the road and struck multiple trees. Poindexter and two passengers in her vehicle as well as all four people in the S-U-V were taken to Moses H. Cone Hospital in Greensboro. The six-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital while all of the other injuries are considered serious.

High Point Man Faces Murder, Other Charges For Deadly Drug Overdose
(Thomasville, NC) -- A High Point man is facing second degree murder and other charges connected to a deadly drug overdose in Thomasville last May. Larento Grady Junior was indicted Wednesday on charges connected to the death of 35-year-old Jacob Fields. The 28-year-old allegedly supplied the deadly dose of fentanyl before Fields was found at a home on James Avenue. Grady is being held in Davidson County Jail on a half-million-dollars bail.
