(Asheville, NC) -- A manhunt is underway for the suspect in a deadly Asheville shooting. A woman was killed and a man was injured when gunfire erupted at the Aston Park Towers on French Broad Street Friday night. Officers are now seeking 20-year-old Menelik Nesanet [[ MEN-uh-lick NESS-uh-net ]] for murder and other charges. He's wanted for nearly a dozen felony warrants in Virginia.

Cawthorn Introduces Bill Connected To Abortions

(Washington, DC) -- Western North Carolina's Congressman is taking steps to make abortions more difficult. Madison Cawthorn presented legislation last week that would prevent federal money from being used to help transport someone across state lines for an abortion, even if it' still allowed in that state. He says the proposal will ensure the federal government doesn't overreach its constitutional authority. Governor Roy Cooper signed an executive order earlier this month in an attempt to protect traveling patients from being prosecuted in North Carolina.

Former Sylva Officer Indicted For Assault

(Sylva, NC) -- A former police officer in the mountains is accused of using excessive force. Sylva's police chief told WLOS-TV that Patrick Trantham was indicted by a grand jury for assault earlier this month for charges connected to an arrest in February 2021. The subject of the arrest reportedly suffered several serious injuries. The chief said being held accountable should be a critical core value for all law enforcement.

WNC Olympian A World Champ Again

The Citizen-Times reports that Bryson County native Evy Leibfarth just placed first in the canoe slalom during the junior world championships held in Italy just over a week ago. Results published by the user review service Yelp last month listed Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards as the best place for wine production in North Carolina. The vineyard notes that it has more than a dozen varieties of wine grapevines.

Suspect Arrested After Comedy Club Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is accused of opening fire inside an uptown Charlotte comedy club. The Comedy Zone was evacuated Saturday night as comedian Craig Robinson was preparing to take the stage. The CMPD says a man pulled out a gun and fired a shot, but no one was injured. The suspect arrested is a convicted felon.

Matthews Voters To Consider Projects On Ballot

(Matthews, NC) -- Voters in Matthews are set to decide on transportation and park projects this fall. Projects have been finalized to be on the ballot November 8th, which will use tax revenue to fund the initiatives. Included are more than 20-million-dollars for transportation and 14-million-dollars in park projects. If approved, taxes won't be affected until at least 2025.

Two Dead In SE Charlote Homicides

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating two homicides in southeast Charlotte. Officers say one man died after he was shot multiple times on East Independence Boulevard early Sunday morning. Another man was killed in a separate shooting just a couple of hours later at the McAlway Manor Condominiums. No arrests have been announced.

Millon-Dollar Lottery Ticket Sold In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- Someone in Charlotte could be carrying a winning lottery ticket in their pockets. The North Carolina Education Lottery says a Powerball ticket worth one-million-dollars was purchased at a Harris Teeter on South Tryon Street. There was no jackpot winner from Saturday's Powerball drawing. Whoever purchased the ticket in Charlotte will have roughly half-a-year to claim the prize.

Fire Damages Charlotte Apartments

(Charlotte, NC) -- The cause of a Charlotte apartment fire is being investigated. It took nearly an-hour-and-a-half for several dozen firefighters to put out the blaze along Turn Stone Court last night. Six units were damaged, but all the residents were able to make it out safely. There's no word on what started the fire.

The squad traveled to Floriday over the weekend, where Inter Miami defeated Charlotte three-to-two. (Gaston County, NC) -- Gaston County veterans are getting a boost from grant funding. WSOC-TV reports the county is handing off more than 100-thousand-dollars for veterans in danger of being homeless or those who have already lost their homes. The program will be handled through a local VFW post.

Rolling Shootout On Durham Interstate Leaves One Man Dead

(Durham, NC) -- A man has died after being wounded in a rolling shootout on I-885 Sunday morning. It happened around 2:30 am in the northbound lanes near the Ellis Road exit in Durham. According to police reports, people in two separate vehicles fired multiple shots at each other, with one occupant being struck. The victim, identified as 31-year old Jamarr Parker, was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died. Investigators have not released a description of the other vehicle and so-far no suspects have been arrested. Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham police.

Halifax County Man Facing Multiple Charges After Sexual Assault On Elderly Woman

(Halifax County, NC) -- A man wanted for burglary and assault in Halifax County is now in police custody. Authorities say 25-year old Curtez Whitaker turned himself in early Sunday morning, after being identified as the suspect who broke into a home on Highway 48-and sexually assaulted an elderly woman on Friday. He is now being charged with attempted first degree forceable rape, breaking and entering with intent to terrorize or injure and assault inflicting serious bodily injury. The elderly woman remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Year Round Classes Resume Today Durham City And Cumberland County Schools

(Durham, NC) -- Thousands of students will return to classes today, as the summer session for year round schools begins in Durham today. The move comes after the Durham Board of Education approved a new districtwide bell schedule, which will standardize start times for elementary, middle and high schools. Openings are schedule for 7:45 am, 8:30 am and 9:45 am respectively. Holt Elementary, Pearsontown Elementary, Easley Elementary, Rogers-Herr Middle and The School for Creative Studies are all taking part in year round schools this summer. Cumberland County schools will also begin year round classes today.

Nearly 50-North Carolina Counties In Code Red For High COVID Community Spread

(Raleigh, NC) -- New figures released by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services show that nearly half the counties in the state are now listed as having high levels of COVID-19 community spread. That according to the CDC, which reported Thursday, that 41-counties had been placed in the orange category, the highest level of COVID spread. Another 40-counties were coded yellow, defined as a medial level of community spread. The CDC recommends everyone in the orange counties wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status.

Year Long Road Construction Project Begins Today In Cary

(Cary, NC) -- Motorists traveling through Cary this week are being alerted to construction work on East Chatham Street between Academy and Walker Streets. The three lane stretch of roadway will be reduced down to two, as crews work on a private development for the Roger's building. Starting today, the road construction project is expected to last until the fall of 2023.
