Money Raised For Asheville Police Officer
(Asheville, NC) -- A big fundraiser is underway to help an Asheville police officer. A fire caused heavy damage to the family home of Lieutenant Russ Crisp just over a week ago after a junction box reportedly malfunctioned. The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association says Crisp and his family will have to stay somewhere else for half-a-year while repairs are made. The association's mountain chapter and police benevolent foundation are taking donations from the public now.
Cataloochee Reunion Organizer Given Governor's Award
(Waynesville, NC) -- North Carolina's governor is honoring the Cataloochee Reunion with his highest honor. The Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award was presented to the organizer of the annual event in Waynesville over the weekend. Those people with roots to the Great Smoky National Park attended the event, which was held at Palmer Chapel Methodist Church. The Cataloochee Reunion has been held for over 80-years.
Small Earthquake In WNC
(Spruce Pine, NC) -- Another earthquake is confirmed in western North Carolina. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a two-point-oh magnitude quake north of Spruce Pine on Saturday night. It wasn't enough to do any kind of damage.
Retirement Community Coming To Mills River
(Mills River, NC) -- A continuing care retirement community is coming to Mills River. The Legacy at Mills River is being built on over 100-acres with an opening date in a little over two-years. WLOS-TV reports its the first community of its kind in the region in two-decades.
Back-To-School Events Happening In Mountains
(Madison County, NC) -- Communities in the mountains are ramping back up for school. The Madison County Fairgrounds was home to a back-to-school bash with food, inflatables and games on Saturday. Asheville Outlets also offered promotional sales at some stores for back-to-school clothing and supplies over the weekend.
Honor Flights Offered To Gold Star Families
(Asheville, NC) -- Special flights are being offered to western North Carolina's Gold Star families. WLOS-TV reports Blue Ridge Honor Flight has traditionally flown out of Asheville to take vets from World War Two, the Korean War and the Vietnam War to their respective memorials in the nation's capitol. Now, the families of fallen soldiers can do so, too. Honor Flight has been operating for over 15-years.
Two Suspects Arrested For May Homicide
(Charlotte, NC) -- Two suspects are behind bars for a north Charlotte homicide. The 18-year-old victims died several days after he was shot on May 14th. A teen suspect was first arrested a few days later for robbery and murder. The CMPD reports a second suspect was arrested last week.
Thousands of jobs Added Around Charlotte Area
(Charlotte, NC) -- Thousands of new jobs are pouring in across the Charlotte region. The Charlotte Regional Business Alliance says close to 20-thousand were created just in the second quarter. The 15-county area reportedly leads the U.S. for job growth in business, financial and health services. The unemployment rate also fell point-three-percent.

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating several homicides from the weekend. It was early Saturday when three-people were shot to death is three-differing cases. A rally against gun violence was held in west Charlotte.
Panthers Win Preseason Opener
(Washington, DC) -- The Panthers are off to a successful start in the preseason. Carolina defeated Washington after a last-minute field goal on Saturday. Most expected starters didn't play, but all prospective quarterbacks did. Baker Mayfield went four-for-seven in the start. Veteran P.J. Walker passed for over 130-yards, a team high.
Hiker Goes Missing In Charlotte
(Charlotte, NC) -- The search is underway for a missing Charlotte man. Investigators say Matt Sullivan hasn't been heard from since he told his family he was going hiking at McAlpine Creek Park on Friday afternoon. The 48-year-old was only supposed to be gone for several hours.
Search For Shooter Of Wake County Sheriff's Deputy Continues Today
(Wake County, NC) -- The search continues today for the suspect wanted in connection with the shooting death of a Wake County Sheriff's Deputy, whose body was found along Battle Bridge Road early Friday morning. Forty-eight-year old Ned Byrd, an officer who handled K-9s and who had been with the Department for 13-years, became the second North Carolina law enforcement officer to be killed in the line of duty within the past two weeks. Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy Matthew Fishman was shot to death on August 1st.
78-Year Old Driver Of SUV Crashes Into Hardees Restaurant In Wilson, Killing Two People
(Wilson, NC) -- So far, no charges have been filed against an elderly North Carolina man who apparently lost control of his SUV Sunday and crashed into a Hardees restaurant in Wilson, killing two brothers. It happened just before 10:am at the Hardees location on Forest Hills Road. Fifty-eight-year old Christopher Ruffin died at the scene. His 62-year old brother Clay Ruffin, died a short time later at a nearby hospital. Investigators say it does not appear that 78-year old Jesse Lawrence was driving impaired or had any medical issues.

Federal Judge Agrees To Allow North Carolina Man Who Made Terrorist Threat Against The U.S. Capitol To Go Free
(Grover, NC) -- A North Carolina man who threatened to set off explosives near the U.S. Capitol last year, has been ordered released from jail. This, after a federal judge determined that his behavior was the result of a mix-up of prescription drugs. Doctors say 50-year old Floyd Ray Rosenberry of Grover, was suffering from the side effects of taking the wrong medications when he made the threats last August. Records show Rosenberry has struggled with mental illness since childhood.
Pile Of Mulch In Nash County Continues To Burn After Nearly A Week
(Nash County, NC) -- Firefighters in Nash County remain on the scene today of a large mulch fire that's been burning for the past several days. The smoldering pile is located near Kamlar Road in Nashville. On its Facebook page, the Department warns local residents that they should expect smoke for a few more days, as firefighters work to spread the burning mulch in an effort to extinguish hot spots.
Bulls Win Six Game Series Against The Jumbo Shrimp 5-Games To -1
(Durham, NC) -- Last night at the DBAP, the Durham Bulls bested the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 11-8 to take five out of six wins in the series. Led by third baseman Tristan Gray who got four hits, the Bulls remain in first place in the International League Eastern Division. After a day of rest today, Durham begins another six game series against the Norfolk Tides tomorrow night in Norfolk. The Bulls return to the DBAP on August 23rd to take on the Nashville Sound.
