(Haywood County, NC) -- A Waynesville man is heading to prison for killing a baby. It's been just over three-years since a nine-month-old girl died after suffering blunt force trauma. Dylan Green was taking care of the child at the time while her mother went to work. A judge sentenced him to life in prison after he pleaded guilty to murder on Friday.
NC Christmas Tree Going On Tour
(Asheville, NC) -- The U.S. Capital Christmas tree from North Carolina is going on tour this year. The Western North Carolina Ag Center in Fletcher will be the first stop on November 5th before several other statewide stops on the way to Washington, DC. A red spruce is being selected from a national forest in North Carolina. The tree will eventually be delivered to the west lawn of the Capitol building on November 18th.

(Buncombe County, NC) -- The cost for school meals is going up in Buncombe County. Congress decided not to extend meal waivers this year, so the cost will go back to parents. Costs will range between three-50 and four-25 for lunches for elementary to high school students. Inflation and supply chain issues have caused prices to go up. Breakfasts will remain free.

Mother Arrested At Raleigh Hospital After Deaths Of Her Two Daughters

Launice Shanique Battle was arrested early Sunday morning at Duke Raleigh Hospital and charged with murder. This, after two girls, ages two and three years old, were pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators say Battle is the children's mother. They have not yet released any further details surrounding the toddler's deaths.
One Person Found Dead Following Fire Inside Durham Apartment Home
(Durham, NC) -- Fire inspectors in Durham are trying to determine the cause of a blaze at an apartment building that left one person dead. Crews responded to a call of a fire just before 8:30 Sunday morning at a building along Wood Cottage Court. They arrived to find no smoke coming from the structure, but once inside, they discovered the body of a person lying on the floor and visible signs of water and smoke damage. The victim was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Sound Of What Was Thought To Be Gunshots Sends Mall Shoppers Running For Cover
(Raleigh, NC) -- What initially sounded like gunfire sent dozens of shoppers scrambling for cover at the Crabtree Valley Shopping Mall in Raleigh. It happened just before 7 p.m. Saturday near the food court. Witnesses say a fight between two groups of teenagers resulted in a chair falling and loud noises. Raleigh police arrived to find no signs of a shooting and there were no injuries. Investigators are still looking for suspects.
Two Women Die While Stopped on Southbound US-52
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Two women have died after they were hit by a semi-truck in a crash on southbound US-52. Police say it happened near Ziglar Road in Winston-Salem Saturday morning. Officials say Elizabeth Goins of Pilot Mountain and Heather Singleton of Lewisville were stopped in the right-hand lane and were hit when they got out of the car. A tractor-trailer driven by 60-year-old Bradly Perry collided into the women and Goins' Dodge pickup truck. Both women were pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver stayed on the scene and was cooperative with police.
Cary Woman Arrested for Murdering Two Young Daughters
(Cary, NC) -- A Cary woman has been arrested for the murder of her two toddlers. WGHP-TV obtained arrest warrants which show Launice Shanique Battle allegedly murdered the girls, who were two and three years old. The warrants say it occurred on Saturday but didn't relay where the crime was committed or how the girls died. Battle is expected in court on Monday for her first appearance. The case remains under investigation, police said.
Two Charged for Shooting Teen in His Backyard
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Two men have been arrested for murder in the death of a 20-year-old who was shot in his backyard in May. Winston-Salem Police says Omar Avila Sanchez, of Flatrock Street and Bryan Santiago Zarate of Hauser Road in Lewisville were arrested and placed in the Forsyth County jail. Police said in a news release Saturday that the two are accused in the May 22nd death of Juan Carlos Hernandez-Mariche of Ansonia Street. The victim was targeted by the suspects.
