(Buncombe County, NC) -- No teacher strike is planned despite a call for action from a Buncombe County commissioner. Amanda Edwards recently encouraged teachers to walk out as a way to get the attention of state lawmakers to address wages for educators. The North Carolina Association of Educators said yesterday there will be no strike at this time. The association of educators in Buncombe County and Asheville released a joint statement, saying the General Assembly needs to use its six-billion-dollar surplus to fulfill its constitutional obligation to North Carolina students.

Asheville Threatens Lawsuit Over Golf Course Rent
(Asheville, NC) -- The company that runs the Asheville Municipal Golf Course could soon face a lawsuit. WLOS-TV reports Pope Golf Asheville owes more than 300-thousand-dollars in rent connected to a disagreement over stormwater repairs dating back to 2019. A city official says they're trying to negotiate a solution because they don't want to close the course. The course will be under no management this October.
Asheville Schools Offering More Mental Health Help
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville City Schools is addressing mental health needs this academic year. The interim superintendent told WLOS-TV that designated rooms will be used for students struggling with mental health. More than a dozen therapists are being employed by the school system this year.
Staffing Still A Problem With School Starting
(Asheville, NC) -- Long-term substitutes are in place to help fill open positions in Asheville City Schools. There are nearly 30 positions that need to be filled as classes begin, including bus drivers, custodians and nutrition workers. Some bus drivers are scheduled to begin the year running double routes, which could cause delays. Parents are encouraged to use the Here Comes the Bus app to track pick-ups and drop-offs.
Waynesville Project Back On DOT Schedule
(Waynesville, NC) -- A Waynesville street project is back on the slate for the DOT. The agency initially decided to put off the South Main Street initiative due to a funding shortage, but it's now on the schedule again. Town manager Rob Hites says property owners should be able to completely renovate dilapidated and empty commercial areas in the plan. It could still take up to a decade to complete.
Child Injured In Charlotte Shooting
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating the shooting of a child. Officers found a four-year-old boy injured at the Wallace Wood Apartments in southeast Charlotte on Monday night. A witness told WCNC Charlotte that she heard at least eight gunshots. The search is underway for a suspect.

One Dead In Charlotte Homicide
(Charlotte, NC) -- A homicide in southwest Charlotte is being investigated by the CMPD. Officers found a man shot to death at an apartment complex on Sharon Road West Monday afternoon. A search is underway for a suspect.
Meth Bust Reported In Burke County
(Burke County, NC) -- A Georgia man is accused of trafficking drugs through Burke County. Investigators say the suspect was caught with 18-pounds of methamphetamine in a traffic stop on I-40 this week. Another woman from Georgia was also caught with 18-pounds of meth in Burke County earlier this month.
Student, Mother Charged In Marijuana Bust
(Rock Hill, SC) -- A mother and her son are facing charges connected to a marijuana bust in Rock Hill. A school resource officer reportedly found pot and a stolen gun inside the backpack of a 16-year-old at South Pointe High School yesterday. The teen was arrested after trying to run away from police. Investigators say the mother tried taking the pack away during the search and was charged with obstruction.
Panthers Acquire New Wide Receiver
(Charlotte, NC) -- A new wide receiver is on his way to play for the Panthers. The organization announced yesterday it acquired Laviska Shenault, Junior from the Jaguars in a multiple team trade. Shenault caught for just over 600 yards last season in Jacksonville. Offensive lineman Dennis Daley was traded away for a 2024 draft pick.
A Wake County High School Place On Lockdown Following Nearby Shooting
(Wake County, NC) -- Some scary moments for students on the first day of classes, as one Wake County school was temporarily placed on lockdown Monday, following a shooting. A Code Red alert was issued for Wakefield High School, after one person was shot and wounded near the entrance of Bell Wakefield Apartments, about two blocks away. Investigators say the victim's injuries were not life-threatening and nearby schools were not in any danger. Police are still looking for the shooter, who reportedly ran away from the scene on foot.
Three Police Officers Treated At Hospital For Possible Narcotics Exposure
(Sunset Beach, NC) -- An investigation continues after three police officers in the coastal town of Sunset Beach, had to be hospitalized for possible exposure to narcotics. It happened Sunday afternoon during an arrest and subsequent transport to jail of two suspects who were intoxicated. Records show all three officers were treated for exposure to a yet to be identified substance after feeling sick while driving. They were later released.
Monkeypox Cases Across North Carolina Have Now Risen To 308
(Raleigh, NC) -- New figures released by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services show the number of Monkeypox cases rose to 308-yesterday, an increase of 20-since Friday. HHS says the state is now averaging at least eight new cases per day, with the disease spreading most commonly among gay and bisexual men. Last week, two women in Wake County tested positive for the virus.
Booze It & Lose It Labor Day Campaign Now Underway In North Carolina
(Raleigh, NC) -- State troopers kicked off the annual 'Booze It & Lose It' campaign in North Carolina on Monday. From August 29th through September 11th, motorists are being warned that there will be increased law enforcement patrols on roadways, looking out for drunk, distracted and impaired drivers, along with speeders. Those charged with DWI offenses could be jailed and forced to pay thousands of dollars in fines.
PNC Arena Now Hiring To Fill More Than 400-Positions
(Raleigh, NC) -- The PNC Arena will host a big hiring event today. Applications will be accepted and on-site interviews will be conducted with hopes of filling over 400-part time vacant positions. A variety of jobs are available, including security, parking attendants, retail associates, concession stand workers and cooks. The hiring event starts at 3:pm and will run through 6:pm.
Black Duke University Volleyball Player Says Several BYU Fans Shouted Racial Insults At Her; Not Just One
(Durham, NC) -- More information coming out about an incident in which racial slurs and epithets were hurled at a Duke University women's volleyball player during a match against BYU over the weekend. According to Rachel Robinson, who is black, several people sitting in the student section at Smith's Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah, heckled racial insults and threatened her throughout the game. BYU has issued a statement saying one individual who was not a student, has been banned from attending any future University athletic events. BYU has also apologized to Robinson for the incident.
Man Dies After Shooting in High Point
(High Point, NC) -- One man has died and another has been arrested after a shooting in High Point Monday afternoon. Officers responded to the 43-hundred block of Garden Club Street about 1:30 in the afternoon to find Terrance Parms dead from a gunshot wound. Marcus Dilworth, who is 41, was charged in Parms' death. Dilworth reportedly had called 9-1-1 and said he'd been threatened with a gun first. He's been charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He's in the Guilford County Jail.
High Point Police Ask for Public's Help in Distributing Fliers for Missing Woman
(High Point, NC) -- The High Point Police Department is looking for volunteers to hand out fliers in their search for an 81-year-old woman. A news release from the department says Heddie Dawkins was reported missing from her Jamestown home last Wednesday morning. Doorbell camera footage from the 2700 block of Blockhouse Court shows Dawkins walking away about 1:30 a.m. and heading north. An extensive search has already been launched within a three-mile radius of her home. If you can help with the fliers, you're asked to meet at 10:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Penny Road.
N.C. A&T Gets $10M Federal Grant For Clean Energy Research Center
(Greensboro, NC) -- North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University has been awarded a 10-million-dollar grant from the Department of Energy to establish a clean energy research center. School officials say the Center for Electrochemical Dynamics and Reactions on Surfaces will mostly focus on splitting hydrogen and oxygen from water to produce clean hydrogen for energy use. Other institutions that received similar funding include Stanford, Georgia Tech, M-I-T and Michigan State University.
Winston To Host Large Conference For Business Startups
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- An expo conference that showcases the area's startup community will be combining with another event to highlight Triad entrepreneurs next month. Promoters say the Flywheel's Startup Expo has merged with ConvergeSouth to become one of the largest gatherings of startups in the southeast. The programs will connect investors with potential partners and offer educational seminars on emerging digital tools. The conference will take place September 8th through 9th in downtown Winston-Salem.
Two Area Minor League Teams Meet Up for Last Time This Season
(Greensboro, NC) -- The Winston-Salem Dash and Greensboro Grasshoppers baseball teams will meet for the final six times this week. The two teams from the Triad have split 18 games this season so far. The homestand is the final one of the season for the Grasshoppers, whose final six games will be at Bowling Green. The series with the Dash gets underway Tuesday night at 6:30 at First National Bank Field in Greensboro.
