(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are trying to track down a suspect who threatened the mayor. Investigators say around 40 threatening emails insulting Mayor Esther Manheimer and her family were sent over the period of just a day earlier this month. The emails also threatened a lawsuit for negligence.
Millions Available For NC Parks and Rec Departments
(Raleigh, NC) -- Millions of dollars are going to help park and recreation projects across North Carolina. Governor Roy Cooper announced Monday that more than 17-million-dollars is being awarded to nearly 40 parks. The maximum award amount for each is half-a-million-dollars. Cooper says the money will help build happier and healthier lives.
Woman Arrested For Haywood County Death
(Haywood County, NC) -- A Haywood County mother is facing charges in the death of her son. A two-month-old boy was found dead after a house fire on McCracken road nearly two-years ago. The district attorney's office told WLOS-TV this week that the child actually died before the fire due to methamphetamine in the baby's system. New charges against the mother include involuntary manslaughter.
Asheville Tourism Boosted By Tennis Tourney
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville's tourism industry is getting a big boost at one of tennis' majors this week. The Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority announced earlier this month that it would be part of sponsorships at the U.S. Open in New York, which in ongoing now. The Citizen-Times reported yesterday it will come at a cost of one-point-three-million tax payer dollars. The one-year deal is in line with other national media spending.
One Dead In Madison County Accident
(Madison County, NC) -- One person is dead after a tragic box truck accident in western North Carolina. The highway patrol says the truck ran off North Carolina Highway 63 in Madison County on Monday morning and fell 150-feet down an embankment. The driver was killed, while a passenger was injured. Speed was considered a factor in the wreck.
Rutherford Jail Adding Body Scanner
(Rutherford County, NC) -- A body scanner is being added at the Rutherford County jail. The sheriff told WLOS-TV it was needed after several overdoses earlier this year. One inmate died after ingesting fentanyl in January. The scanner is scheduled to be installed today, making Rutherford one of at least 13 counties in the state with the device.
One Dead, One Injured In Charlotte Homicide
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a homicide in southwest Charlotte. Officers found one man shot to death and another man injured on Rose Ridge Place last night. It reportedly stemmed from a drug deal. No charges have been announced.
Man Not Guilty In Charlotte Child Murder
(Charlotte, NC) -- A Charlotte man accused of killing a child is walking free again. A jury found Charles Sims not guilty last week in the death of his girlfriend's two-year-old son 15-years ago. He had been imprisoned for five-years. A civil lawsuit is expected to be filed.
CMS Makes Monkeypox Plan
(Charlotte, NC) -- CMS is making a plan to address monkeypox as the new school year begins. Students and staff are being told to avoid anyone with symptoms of the illness. Anyone being tested should stay at home until test results are confirmed. Classroom spaces will be cleaned and disinfected after any case.
Woman Accused Of Stealing From Nursing Center Resident
(Kannapolis, NC) -- A woman in Kannapolis is accused of stealing thousands from a nursing center resident. WSOC-TV reports the suspect allegedly stole 45-thousand-dollars from a Big Elm Nursing Center resident she had been caring for for months. The employee was fired earlier this year.
Woman Dies In Lenoir Fire
(Burke County, NC) -- A deadly home fire is being investigated in Lenoir. Firefighters say a woman and two dogs died when flames spread through a home on Central Drive Monday. The fire allegedly started in the garage before it spread to the rest of the home.
Panthers Trim Roster
(Charlotte, NC) -- The Panthers roster is set for the NFL season. The team released former Alabama offensive lineman Deonte Brown yesterday after being drafted by the team in 2021's sixth round. Carolina also let go of cornerback Kalon Barnes who was taken in the seventh round of this past draft. Other notable cuts include defensive end Darryl Johnson and cornerback Tae Hayes.
Newly Hired Kenly Town Manager Fired By City Council
(Kenly, NC) -- Leaders in the Johnston County town of Kenly have moved to terminate the contract of new Town Manager Justine Jones. During a special called meeting of the City Council Tuesday night, members voted 3-2 to fire Jones, after the entire police Department resigned on August 2nd, blaming her for creating a hostile work environment. The mass exodus left the community of just of 1500 without any local police patrols. Those duties have since been taken over by the Johnston County Sheriff's Office. Jones, who was hired in June, will work through the end of the week.
Coroner's Office Rules Baby Found Buried In Back Yard Died Of Blunt Force Trauma To The Head
(Harnett County, NC) -- A preliminary autopsy report of a new born baby who was discovered buried in the back yard of an Erwin couple, has determined that the child died from blunt force trauma to the head. Forensics experts also believe the body had been buried there since around November of 2021. Harnett County authorities have charged 18-year old Gracie Riddle and 28-year old Dustin Van Dyke with first degree murder. Both remain jailed under no bond.
State Chapter Of The NAACP Loses Its Tax Exempt Status
(Raleigh, NC) -- The North Carolina state chapter of the NAACP has lost its tax exempt status. According to the IRS, the status was revoked earlier this year after audits showed the civil rights organization had not filed returns for the past three years. This means that for now, any financial donations made to the state chapter will not be tax deductible in 2023. Daquan Love, Executive Director of the NC NAACP, said a team of accountants is currently working with the IRS, to have the tax exempt status restored as soon as possible.
VP Kamala Harris To Visit The City Of Durham Tomorrow
(Durham, NC) -- Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to visit the city of Durham tomorrow to take part in a fundraising event. The White House says she also plans to meet with state and local leaders to talk about benefits being offered through the recently signed Inflation Reduction Act. The ticket-only event marks the Vice President's second visit to the Bull City this year. Back in March she made a visit to talk about creating more good paying jobs.
RDU Expecting Near Record Breaking Crowds This Holiday Weekend
(Wake County, NC) -- Officials at RDU are preparing for increase air travel over the long Labor Day holiday weekend. Airport officials are predicting more than 150-thousand people will pass through the facility between now and Monday, an increase of 17-percent over last year. The busiest day is expected to be Friday, when over 32-thousand travelers will book flights for the weekend. Passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours early.
Dale Jr. To Return To Racing Later Today
(North Wilkesboro, NC) -- North Carolina native son Dale Earnhardt Jr. will return to the racetrack today. Earnhardt Jr. will compete in the CARS Tour Late Model Stock race at North Wilkesboro Speedway. His return also marks the culmination of a long clean up and restoration of the track, which he played a major role in. Earnhardt will be driving the familiar No. 3 Chevrolet, sponsored by Sun Drop soda, which was one of his early sponsors when he first began his professional racing career.
Body Found May be that of Missing High Point Woman
(High Point, NC) -- A body found Tuesday evening may be that of a missing High Point woman. Police say the remains might be those of Heddie Dawkins, an 81-year-old with severe dementia who disappeared more than six days ago. The body was found in the 2300 block of Hickswood Road a short distance from Dawkins' home. Police say foul play is not suspected.
Man To Spend 15 Years in Prison for Apartment Shooting
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Winston-Salem man will spend at least 15 years in prison for killing 53-year-old Tina Louise Nicholson in her kitchen. Authorities say she was killed when Traquan Javon Cheeseboro and opened fire on her building. The 21-year-old man pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Monday in Forsyth Superior Court. Cheeseboro also was shot on the same day that Nicholson was killed. He is now paralyzed from the chest down and confined to a wheelchair. Nicholson's son said in court that he wished Cheeseboro had died.
Suspect Gets At Least 18 Years in Prison for Heroin Trafficking
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A 28-year-old Winston-Salem man has been convicted for selling and trafficking heroin. A news release from the Forsyth County District Attorney's Office says John Robert Hayes pleaded guilty to the various charges Tuesday. Undercover officers bought more than 103 grams of heroin from Hayes worth an estimated 10-thousand-dollars. He was sentenced to at least 18 years, 9 months in prison and a maximum of 23-and-a-half years.
Former American Idol Contestant To Perform At Greensboro Pride
(Greensboro, NC) -- Promoters say musician and drag performer Ada Vox will be headlining the 15th annual Pride Festival in Greensboro. The performer is best known for competing on American Idol in 2018 and making history as the first drag artist to place among the top 10 finalists. The Greensboro Pride Festival is set for Sunday, September 18th on Elm Street in Downtown Greensboro. It will be free and open to the public.
Gas Under $3.50 A Gallon In the Triad
(Greensboro, MO) -- The average cost of a gallon of gas in the Triad area is now under three dollars and 50 cents a gallon. That's according to Triple A, which reports the current average is three-47. That's about five cents cheaper than a week ago. The average in Winston-Salem sits at three dollars and 46 cents a gallon, while in Greensboro it's three-48.
