Hotel Bookings Down In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- Tourism numbers are down in Asheville. The tourism director told WLOS-TV hotel bookings were down in May, June and July. The president of Explore Asheville says people are reducing the amount of trips they're taking. Hotel bookings are expected to be down this fall as well.

Another Suspect Arrested In Child's Overdose Death

(Haywood County, NC) -- A man is facing charges in a child's overdose death in Haywood County. Close to two-years ago, a house fire was thought to be the cause of a two-month-old boy's death. Recent toxicology results show the boy actually died from methamphetamine before the fire. Investigators say a man has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, several days after the child's mother was arrested for the same thing.

Labor Day Festival Returns To Canton

(Canton, NC) -- Canton's Labor Day Festival is finally returning in person this year. The event was called off in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic and then last year because of deadly flooding. Mayor Zeb Mathers says it's part of the town's story to say Canton is back. Food, drink, music, a parade and more are all planned for Monday.

Transylvania County School Receiving Help For Solar Energy

(Brevard, NC) -- A Transylvania County is going green. NC Green Power is providing Brevard Academy with 42-thousand-dollars to install solar panels. It's part of the Solar Plus Schools program, which is giving grants to 20 schools statewide. Money will also be used for teacher training at the academy.

Free Admission To Mountain State Fair With Canned Goods

(Fletcher, NC) -- The MANNA Food Bank will benefit from a special day at the Mountain State Fair. Visitors will receive free admission at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center if they bring five Laura Lynn-brand canned goods from Ingles on September 14th. The fair's general manager says it usually makes Ingles Day the busiest day at the event. The mountain state fair will last from September 9th through 18th.

Free Insulin Offered In Three WNC Counties

(Henderson County, NC) -- Free insulin is being offered to diabetes patients in several mountain counties. Patients are encouraged to contact The Free Clinic to see if prescriptions can be transferred to their home pharmacies. It's taking place in Henderson, Polk and Transylvania counties.

One Shot After Mall Robbery

(Concord, NC) -- A suspect in a Concord Mills Mall robbery is being treated for injuries in an officer-involved shooting. Concord police chased three suspects accused of stealing credit cards yesterday. They eventually ended up at a construction area on the mall's property, where one of the suspects shot towards the officers. Fire was returned and hit the suspect. The remaining two were arrested.

Chester Murder Suspect Found In Texas

(Chester, SC) -- The suspect in a deadly double shooting in Chester, South Carolina is finally behind bars. It's been nearly six-months since two people were killed and three others were injured. Vangereil Miller is accused of murder and had been on the run since then. Investigators arrested him in Fort Worth, Texas yesterday.

Flawed Payroll Program To Be Used In CMS

(Gaston County, NC) -- A payroll program causing problems for Gaston County school employees will soon be used in Charlotte. WCNC Charlotte reports some teachers have been getting paid incorrectly or missing checks altogether ever since the system was put in place earlier this year. CMS is switching to the Oracle system next year, and will be the second in the state to use it behind Gaston. Personnel has reportedly been hired to repair the problems.

Traffic Delays Outside New Charlotte School

(Charlotte, NC) -- A new Charlotte school is causing some traffic headaches. Cars have been backed up in both directions along Highway 49 since classes started at Palisades High School in Steele Creek. Students are being urged to get to school as early as 6:30 in the morning due to the back-ups.

CMPD Looking For Shooting Suspect's Car

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD needs the public's help in finding a shooting suspect. A four-year-old was injured when a shot was fired into a building on Wallace Road Monday. Police released surveillance footage yesterday showing the suspect's car. It's a silver sedan with front end damage and no license plate.

No Injuries In School Bus Wreck

(Charlotte, NC) -- No injuries are being reported in a CMS bus crash. A car and the bus collided on South Boulevard near Archdale Drive yesterday. None of the 13 students on board were hurt.

Davidson College Honors Curry

(Davidson, NC) -- Davidson College is honoring one of its most famed former students. NBA star Steph Curry was inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame yesterday. His jersey number was also retired. This comes several months after Curry earned his diploma, which was also given to him yesterday.

14-Year Old Moore County Boy Remains In Coma Following Hit-And-Run Incident

(Moore County, NC) -- The search continues today for a driver who struck and injured a 12-year old boy in Moore County and kept going. It happened Tuesday night along Spies Road near the Montgomery County line. Investigators say the child, identified as Tyler Mabe, was walking along the highway with a friend, when he was hit by someone driving a possible silver colored Toyota or Honda. The boy was last reported to be in a medically induced coma.

Police Shoot Armed Suspect Who Fired At Them Inside Concord Mills Mall Wednesday

(Concord, NC) -- One person remains hospitalized in critical condition today, following an officer-involved shooting inside the Concord Mills mall in Concord. It happened early Wednesday afternoon, when officers responded to a call that three suspects had stolen a customers credit cards. Upon arriving, officers chased the suspects inside the mall, where one of the men fired a gunshot at police. Officers returned fire striking the suspect at least once. He was transported to a nearby hospital, while the other two men were booked and taken to the Cabarrus County Jail.

Stein Joins 37-Other AG's In Effort To Enforce Laws Governing Airline Industry

(Raleigh, NC) -- Attorney General Josh Stein announced Wednesday, that he has joined Attorneys General from 37-other states in asking Congress to pass new legislation that would give them the authority to enforce federal and state laws governing the airline industry. This, following thousands of recent complaints from air travelers. The AG's want to hold airlines accountable for cancelled and delayed flights, as well as lost or mishandled luggage.

Report Shows Downtown Section Of Raleigh Making A Post-Pandemic Rebound

(Raleigh, NC) -- A newly released report shows the downtown area of Raleigh is making a steady comeback from the worst days of the pandemic. According to the Downtown Raleigh Alliance, an estimated 6-point-7 billion dollars in new construction projects have been completed or are in the planning stages since 2015. In addition, more than 35-new storefront businesses have opened since January of 2021 and 323-new parking spaces have been added.

Toyota Announces Plan To Invest 2-Point-5 Billion More In Randolph County Electric Vehicle Battery Plant

(Liberty, NC) -- Toyota Motor Company has announced plans to invest an additional 2-point-5 billion dollars to expand an electric vehicle manufacturing plant in Liberty. The expansion is expected to create an extra 350-new jobs in Randolph County. Toyota made an initial investment of 1-point-29 billion back in December to construct the plant at the 2-thousand acre Greensboro-Randolph Mega-site. The latest investment brings the total to 3-point-8 billion.

Bulls Down Charlotte Knights With A Late Inning Grand Slam By Catcher Pinto

(Charlotte, NC) -- A grand slam from Durham catcher Rene Pinto helped the Bulls to secure a 9-6 victory over the Charlotte Knights Wednesday night. Toyota to Bring 350 More Jobs to Area

(Greensboro, NC) -- Toyota will be investing billions more and creating hundreds of additional jobs at the electric car battery plant it's building at the Greensboro-Randolph Megasite. The announcement from company officials Wednesday says they're investing two-and-a-half-billion-dollars more at the facility. The expanded investment will add two more lines to the operation, creating another 350 jobs. That brings total planned employment to just over two-thousand workers when the plant opens in 2025.

New Median Restrictions Added in Greensboro

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro City leaders say new signs restricting standing or sitting in medians will help save lives. But supporters of the city's homeless say the move restricts people who depend on handouts from drivers. One woman tells WGHP-TV that if she's in the median, drivers from all directions can see her but if she's on the side of the road, only drivers in one lane can. The deputy city manager for the city says over 100 signs have been installed after a rise in pedestrian crashes.

Underserved Areas to Receive High-Speed Internet

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Nearly 70 counties in North Carolina will soon have better access to high-speed internet service. Those include parts of Guilford, Forsyth, and Alamance counties. Governor Roy Cooper said Wednesday the state will use grants and 206-million-dollars from its American Rescue Plan money to fund the expansion to improve coverage in underserved rural and regional areas. The announcement is in addition the Affordable Connectivity Program, where the federal government provides 30-dollars per month for qualifying families to connect to the internet.

County Worker Dies in Crash Enroute to Service Call

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Forsyth County utilities worker has died in a crash while on his way to repair a sewer pipe. Officials say Russell Cutrell was killed when the truck he was driving left Friedburg Church Road and turned over late Monday night near Candlewood Drive. James Glisson Junior, a coworker who was a passenger in the truck, survived. Members of the city's Safety and Risk Management staff are investigating the accident.

W-S 911 Center Looking for Applicants

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Winston-Salem emergency responders say they need to fill over 20 dispatch positions to be fully staffed. Officials say mandatory overtime at the 9-1-1 call center has been in effect for seven years and the struggle to find qualified people has only become more difficult with the worker shortage. They've increased pay to almost 40-thousand-dollars annually in hope of attracting more applicants.
