Asheville Man Sentenced For Deadly Stabbing

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville man is heading to prison for a deadly stabbing. Buncombe County's district attorney says the man was sentenced to at least five-and-a-half-years after pleading to a downgraded charge of voluntary manslaughter this week. Murder charges were initially filed after the victim was killed at the Pisgah View Apartments in 2018.

Rain Expected From Hurricane Ian

(Asheville, NC) -- Western North Carolina should feel the impacts of Hurricane Ian this weekend. The National Weather Service is projecting the storm to push through Florida later this week before it moves through the Peach State and into the Carolinas. While the track is currently closer to the coast, rain is still expected to impact the mountains. A few inches of rain are projected through Saturday.

Mills River Wants Public Input For COVID Relief

(Mills River, NC) -- The town of Mills River is looking for input on how to spend relief funding. WLOS-TV reports a public survey is being launched later this week. Over two-million-dollars has been used in the last couple of years, with some going to the fire department.

Aging Center Planned For UNCA

(Buncombe County, NC) -- An active aging center is being planned on the campus of UNC-Asheville. A committee from the school's board of trustees and Buncombe County came to an agreement yesterday to create the one-stop location. The Council on Aging of Buncombe County will operate the center with community partners.

Fiber Cable Company Adding Jobs In Henderson County

(Henderson County, NC) -- A Scottish-based company is bringing new jobs to Henderson County. Emtelle is planning an expansion in Fletcher for the production of fiber cable. The company's CEO estimates several billions of dollars will be invested in fiber rollouts over the next half-decade in the U.S. Around 200 jobs will be added at the new location.

Candler Woman Wins Big In Lottery

(Buncombe County, NC) -- The lottery is padding the pockets of a Candler woman. She recently purchased a 30-dollar Fabulous Fortune scratch-off ticket from Boone's Convenience Corner in Candler that was a multi-million-dollar winner. Lottery officials say the woman came to headquarters to claim her prize last week. She ended up taking home close to one-point-three-million-dollars after taxes.

Bridge To Be Named After CMPD Officer

(Charlotte, NC) -- The city of Charlotte is honoring a fallen CMPD officer. The council approved a resolution yesterday to name the I-85 bridge at W.T. Harris Boulevard after Mia Goodwin. She was killed in the line of duty last December when a truck struck four officers on the interstate. The driver of the truck has been charged with involuntary manslaughter among other counts.

Teen Arrested For Charlotte School Threats

(Charlotte, NC) -- A young teen is accused of making threats at a Charlotte-Mecklenburg school. Officers have arrested an eighth grader after threats of a mass shooting at Southwest Middle School were posted on Instagram last week. No weapons were found at the student's home. Disciplinary action is also expected to be made through the school system.

York County Part Of Dog Fighting Bust

(York County, SC) -- A massive dog-fighting ring is being busted close to Charlotte. York was one of half-a-dozen counties in South Carolina where over 300 dogs were seized on Sunday. More than 20 people were arrested and are now facing charges in connection to the investigation. In York County alone, around 80 dogs were found.

Football Games Pushed Up Due To Weather

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- Hurricane Ian is having an impact on high school athletics. CMS has decided to move up any varsity football games scheduled on Friday to Thursday night in anticipation of inclement weather. Rock Hill Schools have also made the same decision. Union County Schools has made decisions on a game-by-game basis.

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Hornets are signing the brother of one of their star players. The team announced LiAngelo Ball has signed a one-year, non-guaranteed contract. The older brother of LaMelo spent last season with the team's G-League affiliate, the Greensboro Swarm. The Hornets begin their preseason a week from Sunday when they travel to Boston to take on the Celtics.

Levels At Lake Johnson Being Lowered Ahead Of Expected Heavy Rains From Hurricane Ian

(Raleigh, NC) -- Public works officials in Raleigh have begun making preparations for heavy rain and possible flash flooding, ahead of the arrival of the remnants of Hurricane Ian later this week. On Monday, officials began to lower the lake levels of Lake Johnson in an effort to keep it from overflowing into Walnut Creek and into surrounding communities. Crews also began cleaning clogged drains of debris.

U.S. Treasury Secretary To Visit Central North Carolina Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is scheduled to visit the Triangle area today. The purpose of the visit will be to talk up the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act and the economic impact of clean energy infrastructure investments. Yellen will first tour clean energy plant Cypress Creek Renewables in Durham, before delivering a speech at a solar panel field in Chapel Hill.

Protesters Hold Two Rallies In Raleigh Monday, In Show Of Support For The Women Of Iran

(Raleigh, NC) -- Two separate demonstrations were held Monday in central North Carolina, in a show of support for the women of Iran. This, after a 22-year old woman died last week, while in the custody of the so-called Morality Police in Iran for improperly wearing a head covering known as a 'Hijab'. The Iranian government claims the woman died in the hospital from a heart attack. The protest rallies were held outside the Wake County Courthouse and on the campus of NC State University.

Durham Public Housing Receives 40-Million Dollar Grant From HUD

(Durham, NC) -- The City of Durham has announced the awarding of a 40-million dollar federal grant, to help with the cost of building a new public housing development. The funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, will be used for the demolition of public housing projects at 519-East Main and Liberty Streets. Plans are to replace those buildings with a 555-unit development, that will be a combination of public housing and market value units within the same complex.

Canes To Begin Pre-Season Schedule Tonight At PNC Arena

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Carolina Hurricanes will begin their new season tonight with a pre-season opener against the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena. It's part of an exhibition tour that will take the Canes to Florida to play the Lightning and Panthers, followed by visits to Columbus to play the Blue Jackets and Buffalo to play the Sabres. The regular season starts on October 12th, with a game against Columbus at PNC Arena.

Man Arrested In Greensboro For Capitol Riot Connection

(Guilford County, NC) -- A man arrested in Guilford County is facing charges connected to the U.S, Capitol riot. Federal prosecutors say the suspect stole a capitol police badge, jacket and name tag on January 6th, 2021. He was found and arrested at the Homestead Lodge motel in Greensboro Sunday. The man allegedly told investigators he went into the building to film because it was newsworthy.

Hurricane To Impact Triad

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Heavy rains from Hurricane Ian could affect the Triad this weekend. The effects from the storm are expected to hit the Winston-Salem and Greensboro areas sometime Friday ahead of the eye of the storm. The National Weather Service is calling for the hurricane to hit Florida in the next couple of days before moving into Georgia and the Carolinas. Some school districts have moved Friday night football games to Thursday.

Two Dead In Asheboro Shooting

(Asheboro, NC) -- A deadly double-shooting is being investigated in Asheboro. Officers say two women were shot to death at a home on Hamil Street yesterday. Neighbors told WFMY News that the women killed were a grandmother and granddaughter. Investigators say there's no suspect at-large.

Driver Arrested After Deadly Hit-And-Run

(Greensboro, NC) -- A driver is facing charges in a Greensboro hit-and-run. A 71-year-old man was left for dead after being hit by a truck on South Elm-Eugene Street earlier this month. A man driving a city of Greensboro truck also hit the victim after he had already been struck.

Forsyth County DA Still Pushing Teen Curfew

(Forsyth County, NC) -- Forsyth County's district attorney is pushing for a teen curfew. The Winston-Salem Journal reports Jim O'Neill is planning to talk with the chair of the city's public safety committee to use curfew as a way to stop crimes before they're committed. This comes as the police department says there's been a nearly 70-percent drop in overall juvenile crime from 2017 to now. While O'Neill is running for re-election, his Democratic opponent is not in favor of a curfew.
