Abortion Rally Held In Asheville
(Asheville, NC) -- Efforts to support abortion are continuing in downtown Asheville. WLOS-TV says the Reproductive Justice Rally was held last night at the Orange Peel. Congressional candidate Jasmine Beach-Ferrera said protection of abortion access starts with local races and then moves to state political races. A judge reinstated a ruling in August that outlaws many abortions in the state after 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Murder Investigation Featured On Televison Network Show
(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville murder investigation is being featured tomorrow on the television network Investigation Discovery. It involves the shooting death of a teen near the Montford baseball field in March of 2020. Diontae Whitson is wanted for murder and has been on the run since then. Investigators say they believe Whitson is getting help in hiding from a street gang.
Firefighter's Death Confirmed In Macon County
(Franklin, NC) -- A report from the state medical examiner is confirming the death of a western North Carolina firefighter over the summer. The Citizen-Times obtained a report yesterday that confirms 25-year-old Joseph Paul Orr drowned at Secret Falls in Macon County in late July. The accident happened after his foot reportedly lodged in rocks under the water. Orr worked as a volunteer for Clarks-Chapel Fire Rescue.
Suspect Still At-Large After Asheville Hit-And-Run
(Asheville, NC) -- The search is continuing for the suspect in a deadly hit-and-run one year later in Asheville. Joe Marsh was struck and killed while riding a bike on Hendersonville Road in late September 2021. He died around a week later from his injuries. Asheville police are once again urging anyone with information to come forward.
WNC Organizations Helping In Hurricane Relief
(Asheville, NC) -- Several western North Carolina organizations are helping in Hurricane Ian recovery efforts. WLOS-TV reports a thousand boxes with supplies were collected over the weekend by Hearts with Hands, which is on the way to Naples, Florida. Samaritan's Purse is also sending dozens of volunteers to the Fort Myers area. Nearly half-a-million people are still without power in southwest Florida.
Man Sentenced After Child Dies In Gaston County Wreck
(Gaston County, NC) -- A man is heading to prison for charges in a deadly crash that killed a child in Gaston County. He was sentenced to serve at least 22-years in prison yesterday after pleading guilty in the case. It was June 2021 when a six-year old died in a crash involving street racers on U.S. Highway 74. Another driver has already been sentenced to more than three-years behind bars.
Plans For Commuter Line Considered By Charlotte Leaders

Bank Of America Stadium To Be Used For Early Voting
(Charlotte, NC) -- Early voting is set to be held at Bank of America Stadium this month. The Carolina Panthers organization announced yesterday that voting will take place between October 17th and early November. The team's president says 13-thousand people took part in early voting at the stadium in 2020. One of the early voting periods includes the date of a home game against Tampa Bay on October 23rd.
Catawba County Spending Money On Water Rescue Equipment
(Catawba County, NC) -- Catawba County is shelling out funds for water rescue equipment. WCNC reports more than 400-thousand-dollars will be used for items like motorized inflatable rafts and other equipment in Hickory and Newton. Emergency officials say there was insufficient equipment to help in nearly 50 water rescues over the last five-years.

Wilson Woman Arrested After Boy Treated For Third Degree Burns And Multiple Injuries
(Wilson, NC) -- A Wilson woman remains jailed after being arrested Friday on multiple child abuse allegations. Thirty three year old Bracy Renee Byrd is facing charges of attempted murder, malicious castration, felony child abuse and kidnapping. Arrest records show a child was treated for third degree burns back in July at Wilson Medical Center. Hospital officials also said the child was treated for several other injuries that appeared to be healing before the burns happened. Byrd, who is also the child's adoptive mother, is being held on a two-million dollar bond.
Crews To Resume Clean Up Efforts Following Kerosene Oil Spill Into A Clayton Creek
(Clayton, NC) -- A precautionary recreational water advisory was issued in Clayton Monday, as clean up efforts continued to remove a two-thousand gallon kerosene oil spill from a creek between Main and Lombard Streets. State health officials said the creek is not a part of the Johnston County town's water system. Residents have been advised to avoid having any contact with soil and water from the creek, such as fishing or wading until the advisory is lifted.
Cumberland County Resident Dies After Being Infected By The West Nile Virus
(Raleigh, NC) -- The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the state's first death from the West Nile Virus in 2022. Records show the victim was a person who lived in Cumberland County and was one of two people who have recently being diagnosed. The death comes two weeks after HHS issued a report showing higher than average West Nile Virus activity for this time of year. The virus is transmitted from mosquito bites.
Two North Carolina Cases Expected To Be Taken Up During Fall Session Of The U.S. Supreme Court
(Raleigh, NC) -- The fall term of the U.S. Supreme Court began Monday and two of the most closely watched cases will come from North Carolina. The first, scheduled for later this month, will involve the issue of race in college admissions at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. The High Court will also hear arguments in a case that questions the role of courts in the drawing of Congressional district lines. No date has been announced for that case.
Durham City Leaders Will Consider Establishing New Social District At Next Council Meeting
(Durham, NC) -- When the Durham City Council meets on Thursday, members will hear a presentation on a proposal that would establish a new Social District downtown. Within the District, customers would be allowed to carry alcoholic beverages outside and visit multiple bars and restaurants that sign up to participate. The Social District would operate seven days a week from 11:am until 10:pm.
