Asheville Kidnapper Sentenced To Prison
(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville man is heading to prison for kidnapping. The 47-year-old was sentenced to at least six-and-a-half years after a three day trial this week. A female victim claimed she was sexually assaulted when he held her against her own will for three-days in May of last year. He's also been linked to two other previous cases at his Asheville home.
Open House Planned For Max Patch Future
(Madison County, NC) -- Residents and visitors are welcome to give their input on the future of Max Patch in Madison County. Camping was banned at the site last year due to a bad littering problem in the forest service area. The Spring Creek Community in Hot Springs will host an open house Wednesday to discuss future visitor use and ecological restoration. A virtual presentation will be held the night of the 18th.
Hundreds Of Apartments Proposed In South Buncombe
(Buncombe County, NC) -- Developers are looking to build hundreds of apartment units in south Buncombe County. One project on Sheehan Road includes 260 apartments across seven buildings, dog parks, pavilions and electric car charging stations. The second is 120 townhome units in Avery Creek. The county's Board of Adjustment will consider the projects October 12th.
Voter Residency Requirements Challenged In Graham County
(Graham County, NC) -- Some are bringing up questions about voter registry requirements in Graham County. WLOS-TV says a Lake Santeethah council member recently brought up a challenge because some residents only live there part time. The board of elections dismissed that challenge. The board's chair says these people aren't registered anywhere else.
Arden Group Helping Rescued Kittens
(Asheville, NC) -- An organization in Arden is helping take care of kittens that fled Hurricane Ian. WLOS-TV reports the Esther Neonatal Kitten Alliance brought in close to a dozen kittens from Manatee County, Florida yesterday. It will be at least another month before the felines are old enough for adoption. Some are underweight and dehydrated.
Haywood County Fair Underway
(Haywood County, NC) -- The Haywood County Fair is underway. The four-day event began yesterday at the Smoky Mountain Event Center. Admission tickets are available for purchase at the gate with cash only. The fair was originally scheduled for August, but was delayed until now due to excessive heat at the time.
Plane Makes Emergency Landing After Leaving Charlotte
(Charlotte, NC) -- American Airlines is confirming a plane out of Charlotte was rerouted due to a possible mechanical issue. The flight left out of Charlotte-Douglas International Airport to fly to London late Wednesday night, but was instead diverted into JFK Airport in New York. Everyone made it off the plane safely. The airline hasn't confirmed any other details on the problem.
Gastonia Man Arrested For Double Homicide
(York County, SC) -- A Gastonia man is accused of killing two people in York County. A mother and son were shot to death inside their home in Fort Mill late last month. The suspect was arrested yesterday on two counts of murder and more. He's waiting to be extradited from Gastonia to York County.
Belmont Man Pleads Guilty To Capitol Riots Charges
(Belmont, NC) -- A Belmont man is guilty of trying to use force to oppose the U.S. government. Prosecutors say Jeremy Bertino is a leader in the Proud Boys, which is a right wing group that was involved in the January 6th Capitol riot last year. He pleaded guilty to seditious conspiracy yesterday. Bertino might testify at trials of other Proud Boys members as part of the deal.

Cona Turner posted on Facebook this week that her brother was fired from a Wendy's where he had worked for more than 20-years after the manager allegedly said there were some things he couldn't do. Man In His 60's Hospitalized After Being Stabbed At A Garner Bus Stop
(Garner, NC) -- An investigation continues today after a man in his 60's was stabbed multiple times while waiting at a bus stop near a Walmart store off Fayetteville Road in Garner. It happened last night around 9:pm. Witnesses told police the stabbing stemmed from an argument that escalated into a physical altercation. Two people are being held at the Wake County Detention Center in connection with the attack. The victim was taken to WakeMed Hospital for treatment. No word on his condition.
Prosecutors To Seek Death Penalty In Case Of Accused Child Killer
(Wilson County, NC) -- A Wilson County judge has ruled that prosecutors will be allowed to seek the death penalty against a suspect charged in the brutal slaying of a 5-year old boy two years ago. Twenty five year old Darius Sessoms is accused of shooting Cannon Hinnant in the head, as he rode a bike in front of his fathers house in August of 2019. Investigators have yet to establish a reason for the killing. Sessoms has been formally charged with first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon.
NC Proud Boys Member Pleads Guilty To Seditious Conspiracy Charges
(Gaston County, NC) -- A Gaston County man has become the first member of the far right extremist group Proud Boys to plead guilty to federal seditious conspiracy charges, in connection with the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Forty three year old Jeremy Bertino is accused of posting instructions on social media about how the attack should be carried out. He has also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. Bertino faces up to 20-years in prison for the seditious conspiracy charge.
Amazon To Hire One Thousand Workers In Triangle Area For The Holidays

Duke Energy Progress Seeking To Hike Utility Rates By Over 18-Percent
(Raleigh, NC) -- Duke Energy has made a request with the North Carolina Utilities Commission to raise electric utility rates. If approved, residential customers would see an increase of 18-point-7 percent on their monthly utility bills. That would translate into an average of 126-point-43 dollars per month currently, to 141-point-15 starting in October of 2023. The Charlotte based Duke Energy Progress provides service to an estimated 1-point-5 million customers across central and eastern North Carolina, including Raleigh, Fayetteville and Wilmington.
Pink Ribbon Classic Enters Its Second And Final Day Today
(Raleigh, NC) -- Hundreds are expected to return to the North Ridge Country Club today, for a second round of sporting and entertainment activities at the 6th annual Pink Ribbon Classic. Pilot Walks Away from Crash as Small Plane Lands in House
(Greensboro, NC) -- Emergency officials say a pilot walked away from a crash site in the side of a house in Greensboro Thursday afternoon. It happened about 4:30 on Birkdale Drive. The pilot, who was the only person onboard, was taken to a local hospital to be checked out and is expected to be okay. The Federal Aviation Administration will be investigating what happened.
Boil Order Extended for Reidsville; Kids Need to Bring Water to School
(Reidsville, NC) -- Rockingham County Schools said Bethany Elementary School will run on a three-hour delay on Friday. It's due to continued problems with a water main break in the area. School officials say all students need to bring at least one bottle of water with them Friday, as well. Water service has been restored in Reidsville but officials say they're extending a boil water advisory until noon Friday. The advisory is for anyone who gets their water service from the City of Reidsville.

Officials at TW Garner Foods Company cut the ribbon on their new facility at 4729 Lansing Drive earlier this week. CEO Ann Garner Riddle says the property purchased from the city last year will serve as a distribution and warehouse center.
