Shooting Investigation Leads To West Asheville Drug Bust

(Asheville, NC) -- A drug bust in west Asheville last week is being linked to a shooting. WLOS-TV reports officers searched through a car for several hours during a stop across from the Gas-Up convenience store and found fentanyl, THC edibles and an unknown powdered substance. One of the men in the car is accused of shooting someone in the leg at Hillcrest Apartments earlier in the day. The victim's injuries weren't life-threatening.

NC Ranked Low For School Funding

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina's funding for public schools isn't faring well in a recent study. The Education Law Center placed the Tar Heel State close to the bottom for cost-adjusted per-pupil funding levels at just under ten-thousand-dollars. The national average is over 15-thousand. The president of the Buncombe County Educators Association told WLOS-TV the largest impact still comes back to retaining teachers and staff.

Jury Clears Officer In Human Trafficking Case

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville deputy police chief is cleared in a human trafficking case. A woman accused Jim Baumstark of protecting a prostitution ring during his time in Virginia. A jury ruled against the allegations last week, and instead concluded the woman was a willing sex worker.

Ice Sculptures On Display At Lake James State Park

(Nebo, NC) -- Lake James State Park is the new home to dozens of ice sculptures. A sold-out crowd turned up in Nebo Saturday night, when a sculptor unveiled 40 statues which were illuminated with LED lights. The event was used as a fundraiser. Last year's festival raised six-thousand-dollars.

Juvenile Killing In East Charlotte Shooting

(Charlotte, NC) -- A juvenile is dead in an east Charlotte shooting. The CMPD says the minor died at the scene on William Reynolds Drive, just before noon yesterday. One officer told WBTV that responsible gun ownership is paramount. Exact details weren't given out by investigators.

Death Of 1-Year Old Inside Fayetteville Apartment Being Investigated As A Homicide

(Fayetteville, NC) -- Authorities in Fayetteville are investigating the death of a one-year old as a homicide, after the child was found unresponsive inside a home early Sunday morning. First responders were called to an apartment complex on Blue Street around 7:am. They arrived and tried to perform CPR on the child, but were unsuccessful. The exact cause of death has not been determined. The remains have been turned over to the Chief Medical Examiner's Office for further review.

Results Of Deadly Tasing Investigation To Be Released By Raleigh Police Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- Later today, the Raleigh police department is expected to release the results of an initial investigation into the death of a man who passed away after being tased. Arrest records show 32-year old Darryl Williams was tased after attempting to run away from officers who had pulled him over for a traffic stop on Rock Quarry Road last Tuesday. Williams was later pronounced dead at the hospital. Six Raleigh police officers have been placed on administrative leave.

State Auditor Beth Wood To Appear In Court To Face Hit-And-Run Charges Thursday

(Wake County, NC) -- North Carolina State Auditor Beth Wood is scheduled to appear in Wake County Court on Thursday to face misdemeanor hit and run charges. The 68-year old Wood is accused of hit-and-run, leaving the scene of an accident, property damage and unsafe movement. The case involves a crash between a state owned vehicle driven by Wood and a parked car at the intersection of Hargett and Salisbury streets on the night of December 8th. There were no injuries.

NC State's Terquavion Smith Released From UNC Medical Center Sunday

This, after he had to be taken off the court in a stretcher Saturday, following a hard foul in an 80-69 loss to North Carolina inside the Dean Smith Center. The NC State athletics department announced on social media Sunday, that all x-rays performed at UNC Medical Center turned out to be negative. Initially, Smith complained of pain in the neck and elbow, along with numbness in his right arm.

Man Dies from Shooting on Greensboro's South Side

(Greensboro, NC) - Greensboro police have released the name of a man who was shot Sunday morning on the city's south side. The aggravated assault call came in just after 5:00 a.m. for officers to respond to the 1900 block of Larkin Street. They found 31-year-old Jordan Little at the scene. He later died at a hospital from his injuries. Police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Summerfield Woman Found Dead in Winston-Salem

(Winston-Salem, NC) - A 33-year-old Summerfield woman has been found dead on a Winston-Salem sidewalk. Police were called to the area of the 700 block of Banner Avenue Sunday morning and discovered the body of 33-year-old Carley Owens. Man Dies After Being Shot At A Popeye's Drive-Thru

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Winston-Salem Police are investigating a shooting at a Popeye's drive-thru Friday night. They found the victim, 32-year-old Rashaad Pitts, dead in the parking lot when they arrived at the location on North Martin Luther King Junior Drive. Investigators say that Pitts was in the drive-thru just after 8:00 p.m. when he was shot. No suspect information is available, though police say their investigation is ongoing.

High Point Man Hit, Killed By Wrong-Way Driver

(High Point, NC) - High Point police say it was an impaired 27-year-old driver who crossed the center lane and hit and killed another driver Sunday night. The collision happened in the 2400 block of Lexington Avenue just after 5:00 p.m. Officials believe Ismael Alvarez De Paz of Thomasville hit the car that was driven by Tiermeyer Deron Burris, who died at the scene. Burris was 40 and from High Point. Alvarez De Paz was cited for driving while impaired after officers got a blood sample from him at a local hospital. They say both speed and impairment were contributing factors to the crash.

Carolina Panthers to Interview More Coach Candidates Monday

(Charlotte, NC) - The Carolina Panthers are set to interview two more head coach candidates Monday in New York. Team leaders reportedly are set to meet with Sean Payton, who is the former head coach of the New Orleans Saints, and Mike Kafka, current offensive coordinator for the New York Giants. Managers have met with more than ten candidates since they fired former head coach Matt Rhule in early October.
