Two Dead In Asheville Shooting
(Asheville, NC) -- A deadly double shooting is being investigated in Asheville. A man and woman were found dead at the Maple Crest Apartments on Lee Garden Lane Sunday afternoon. The Asheville Police Department hasn't said yet if there is a search underway for a suspect.
Four Given John Lewis Award
(Asheville, NC) -- Four people in Buncombe County are being honored for their community contributions. The Martin Luther King Junior Association of Asheville and Buncombe County gave out the first John Lewis awards over the weekend. Lewis was a Georgia Congressman and Civil Rights icon. The recipients are Matthew Bacoate Junior, Quentin Miller, Dwight Mullen and Al Whitesides.
Three At-Large After Hit-And-Run
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are looking for several suspects in a hit-and-run. The driver in a car died after it slammed into a vacant building on Haywood Road just over two-weeks ago. Three others from the car allegedly ran from the scene. Officers say the car was speeding at the time of the crash.
Lawmaker Wants Legal BAC Dropped
(Haywood County, NC) -- A western North Carolina lawmaker is trying to change the state's laws on blood-alcohol level for drivers. State Representative Mike Clampitte introduced a bill last week that drops the legal limit from point-oh-eight to point-oh-five. Utah is the only other state with a limit that low. The bill is being discussed in committees.
Medical Marijuana Bill Possibly Out For Vote This Week
(Raleigh, NC) -- A medical marijuana bill is expected to hit the floor of the North Carolina Senate this week. Legislation being discussed now would allow marijuana to be prescribed to help a handful of conditions, like cancer, epilepsy and PTSD. Some marijuana advocates say the bill doesn't do enough. Buncombe County representative Lindsey Prather says the measure is just another way to help out big business.
Model Bridge Competition Underway
(Buncombe County, NC) -- A contest is underway now to see who can construct the best bridge in North Carolina. Middle and high schoolers can center the Department of Transportation's Model Bridge Building Competition. Teams of students will present a model and be judge on design, structural efficiency and oral presentation. Entries are taken through the end of this week.
Homelessness Up In Mecklenburg County
(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- Homelessness is on the rise in Mecklenburg County. A new report shows the number grew three-percent from 2021 to last year. Data also reveals affordable housing numbers have fallen from 45-percent to 13-percent of total housing stock in the last decade. Those that may be facing homelessness can take advantage of several programs offered on Mecklenburg County's government website.
Teens Accused Of Throwing Rocks Off Union County Bridge
(Union County, NC) -- Five teens are accused of throwing rocks off a Union County bridge. Investigators say a tractor trailer was damaged Friday night while driving along the Monroe Expressway. A drone was used to capture the suspects, who initially fled the scene after the truck was hit. The sheriff says the juveniles responsible for the incident will be held accountable.
Man Arrested After Hitting Train In Gastonia
(Gastonia, NC) -- A man is facing charges for allegedly slamming into a train in Gastonia. Officers say the suspect fled the scene at East Ozark Avenue and Cox Road early Saturday morning. He was arrested a short time later and charged with driving while impaired. No injuries were reported.
Drivers Cause Problems On Uptown Streets
(Charlotte, NC) -- Chaotic scenes from Charlotte streets are being reported again. WSOC-TV has obtained video footage showing drivers pulling stunts and closing roads down in uptown over the weekend. A similar event took place near the NASCAR Hall of Fame last month. It's unclear if the CMPD was able to make any arrests.

(Anson County, NC) -- A big lottery winner could be somewhere in Anson County. Someone purchased a Powerball ticket at a Speedway in Wadesboro worth two-million-dollars in Saturday's drawing. The ticket matched all five white balls in the drawing. The prize was doubled since it was a Power Play ticket.

Sound Of Gunfire Sends Shoppers At Crabtree Valley Mall Running, Man Shoots Himself
(Raleigh, NC) -- There were some terrifying moments for shoppers inside the Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh over the weekend. Dozens of people ran for cover Saturday after hearing what sounded like gunfire. Police say during the chaos, a man accidentally shot himself and was transported to a nearby hospital but will be okay. The mall was temporarily shut down and reopened a short time later after officers conducted a thorough sweep. No other injuries were reported.
Raleigh Police Looking For Suspect Who Stabbed A Passenger Onboard A GoRaleigh Bus
(Raleigh, NC) -- Raleigh police are looking for a suspect in connection with a stabbing on a GoRaleigh Transit bus. It happened shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of South Wilmington Street and Chapanoke Road. Investigators say two men apparently got into a fight and one of them pulled a knife and attacked the other. The victim was taken to a hospital and is recovering. The suspect reportedly ran from the scene.
Duke University To Increase Undergraduate Tuition Next School Year
(Durham, NC) -- Duke University is increasing undergraduate tuition by nearly five-percent next school year. The Board of Trustees made the decision at its quarterly meeting last week. This brings the cost for tuition, room and board, student health, recreation and other activities to 83-thousand-263 dollars. Trustees also approved a three-point-one percent increase for students pursuing graduate and professional degrees. Records show more than half of Duke students receive some form of financial assistance.
Controlled Burning Training Exercises To Begin For Durham Fire Department Cadets Today
(Durham, NC) -- Starting today, the Durham Fire Department will begin training exercises for cadets known as "Burn Week." The controlled fire training is designed to give new recruits first hand experience in putting out active fires in cars and other structures, including propane tanks. Graduation is scheduled to take place in April.
Annual Disinfecting Period For Durham Water System Now Underway
(Durham, NC) -- The City of Durham has started its annual water system disinfection period. Customers are advised they might notice a slight change in the taste and smell of their tap water, as the process of switching from a combination of chlorine and ammonia, to chlorine only takes place over the next several weeks. The disinfection process and systematic flushing began on Friday and will run through April 10th.
ESPN's College Game Day Coming To Chapel Hill On Saturday
(Chapel Hill, NC) -- The basketball version of ESPN's College Game Day is coming to Chapel Hill on Saturday. The network says the award winning show will broadcast live from inside the Dean Smith Center as UNC hosts Duke in the 260th meeting of the cross-town rivals. It will also be their second and final game of the regular season. Duke won the first contest 63-57 at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. and the show airs at 11:00. Tip off is scheduled for 6:30 pm.
Shooting Suspect Sets Fire To Apartment Complex
(Greensboro, NC) -- A 36-year-old Greensboro man is being held on a three-million-dollar bond after officials say he set fire to an apartment that spread to other parts of the building. Police say Kevin Green was a suspect in an earlier shooting before he barricaded himself in a home Saturday night at the Colonial Apartments and set fire to it. The fire quickly spread to other units, but officials were able to get everyone out safely. One dog also was rescued and reunited with her owner. Though police haven't said how many apartments were damaged, fire officials say the roof collapsed on part of the apartment building.
State Republicans File Another Measure To Revive CRT Bill
(Raleigh, NC) -- A bill filed by North Carolina Republican lawmakers would prevent teachers from promoting Critical Race Theory to students. House Bill 187 is similar to another C-R-T measure filed by Republicans two years ago, which Democratic Governor Roy Cooper vetoed. The latest bill would prohibit teachers from promoting concepts that suggest America is racist or that people are inherently racist or sexist. It also would prohibit teaching that whites or anyone else are responsible for the sins of their forefathers.
World Stem Cell Summit Coming To Winston-Salem
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Experts from all over the world in the field of stem cell science and regenerative medicine field will be converging on Winston-Salem this summer. Wake Forest officials say the World Stem Cell Summit will be held in conjunction with the 10th annual Regenerative Medicine Essentials Course from June 5th through 9th. The program is designed for clinicians, researchers, investors and government representatives, among others.
Some North Carolinians At Risk For Losing Medicaid
(Raleigh, NC) -- Over the next year, North Carolina officials will be required to start checking the eligibility again of every person who is on Medicaid. People will have to fill out forms to verify their address, income and household size. Federal officials say the checking is necessary because during the pandemic, the government prohibited states from kicking people off Medicaid, even if they were no longer eligible. Now, the feds want to more sure people aren't making too much money to qualify, or haven't gained health care coverage through their employer or moved into a new state.
ACC Community Tip Off Party Happens Tonight at Greensboro Coliseum
(Greensboro, NC) -- Thousands of people are expected to come to the Greensboro Coliseum Complex tonight to celebrate the start of the ACC Tournament. A community tip-off party will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Piedmont Hall. Promoters say guests can meet A-C-C school mascots, enjoy food, live music by The Plaids and many other activities. Admission is free. The ACC women's basketball tournament begins Wednesday at the Coliseum and the men's competition begins next week.
