(Asheville, NC) -- The death of an employee is being investigated at the Biltmore Estate. High winds reportedly knocked over a tree, which killed a worker at the property on Saturday. The estate was closed late Saturday afternoon due to power outages caused by high wind gusts. It's been less than a year since a man was killed by a fallen tree while visiting Biltmore with his family last June.
Another Suspect Arrested After Woman Found In Jackson County
(Jackson County, NC) -- Another suspect is facing charges in connection to the death of a woman found in western North Carolina. A 39-year-old arrested on Friday marks the fifth suspect arrested after the body of Alison Thomas was discovered on national forest land in Jackson County last month. The Union County woman was initially reported missing more than two-weeks before. The latest suspect was charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Buncombe County Wildfire Under Control
(Buncombe County, NC) -- Firefighters are working on another blaze that's spread over significant land in the mountains. Crews say nearly all of a wildfire on Spivey Mountain in Buncombe County had been contained as of yesterday. It had spread to 75-acres at its peak. Another wildfire of roughly the same size had to be contained in Haywood County last week.
Most Power Outages Restored
(Madison County, NC) -- Most power outages have been restored in western North Carolina. High winds caused trees to fall and thousands of power outages across the region. Due to dryness, as many as 30 wildfires were reported at one time on Saturday. Only a few hundred power outages remained in Madison County early this morning.
Pedestrian Injured In Asheville Hit-And-Run
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are looking for the suspect in a hit-and-run. Officers say a person walking with a bicycle was struck by a car on Patton Avenue early Friday morning. The driver fled the scene in what was thought to be a late 2000s Kia Soul.
Gas Prices Climb A Little
(Asheville, NC) -- Gas prices in North Carolina are slightly higher than they were a week ago. The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded stands at three-36, which is a nickel higher than last week. It was a quarter less at this time last month. The Asheville region is seeing a lower price of three-27.

Gastonia Church Helps Wipe Lunch Debt
(Gastonia, NC) -- A Gastonia church is helping pay off school lunch debts. WCNC reports the congregation recently took up 23-thousand-dollars in donations. That will help cover the 13-thousand-dollars already owed, and then pay for what may come up for the rest of the school year. The director of Gaston County's school nutrition program says they work with families to provide alternate meal plans if needed.
UNC Charlotte Raises Money For Levine's Hospital
(Charlotte, NC) -- Money raised by UNC Charlotte is going towards to Levine Children's Hospital. The annual dance marathon was held on campus Saturday. Participants in the eight-hour event were raising money to help pay for pediatric equipment at the hospital.
Two Concord Kids Missing
(Concord, NC) -- Two brothers are missing from their Concord home. Investigators say eight-year-old Josiah Brooks and eleven-year-old Aaron Toliver were likely taken by their father from a home on Wilshire Avenue Southwest Saturday night. It's believed they could be heading towards Texas or Florida. The father doesn't have custody of the children.

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte FC is moving forward with another draw. Saturday's trip to Toronto ended in a two-two tie, which marked Charlotte's second draw in a row. Police Investigating Targeted Shooting Near The Campus Of UNC Chapel Hill
(Chapel Hill, NC) -- Authorities are continuing to search for a suspect in a shooting near the campus of UNC Chapel Hill yesterday. It happened around 2:pm at a home along the 1500 block of Mason Farm Road. Officers responded to a call of shots fired and arrived to find one victim suffering from a gunshot wound. No word on his condition. Investigators say it appears the shooting was targeted and did not pose a threat to the nearby University. The suspect has been described as a 28-year old black male, about 6-feet tall and 180 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white shirt, black pants and black shoes. Anyone with information is asked to contact Chapel Hill police.
CSX Cargo Train Kills Cyclist In Dunn
(Dunn, NC) -- Police in Dunn are investigating a collision between a cargo train and a bicyclist that left the rider dead. It happened early Sunday morning in the area of Pearsall Street. According to the accident report, the CSX train was traveling north when it hit the cyclist around 12:10 am. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The Harnett County Coroner's Office has not yet released the person's identity.
Ft. Bragg Launches New Get Tough Plan To Crack Down On Speeders
(Ft. Bragg, NC) -- Over the weekend, a new ordinance went into effect that will increase penalties for drivers who are issued speeding tickets on the installation of Ft. Bragg, including ranges and training areas. Effective April 1, anyone cited for driving 15 miles over the speed limit will be subject to the suspension of their driving privileges. According to the Ft. Bragg garrison commander, the suspensions will rage from 30-days to six months for first and second offenses. Anyone caught going over 81 mph, will have their license suspended for one year.
NC House To Consider Bill That Extends License Renewal Times For Drivers
(Raleigh, NC) -- A bill pending in the North Carolina House would lengthen the period for which drivers must renew their licenses. Under a budget proposed in the House last week, drivers between the ages of 18-65 would be required to renew their licenses every 18 years instead of eight. The goal is to reduce wait times at local DMV offices. Drivers over the age of 65 would be required to renew their licenses every five years.
Fayetteville Nominated Again For All-American City Award
(Fayetteville, NC) -- The City of Fayetteville has been nominated for an All-American City award. The nomination by the National Civic League, honors 10 cities each year that demonstrate outstanding progress in improving the health and well being of young people. The organization also recognizes cities that engages young people in civic participation, voting and policymaking. Fayetteville was previously selected as an All-American City back in 2011, 2001 and 1985.
Canes Top The Islanders Sunday Night At PNC Arena
(Raleigh, NC) -- The Carolina Hurricanes made it two wins in a row last night at PNC Arena, with a 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders. The two teams were tied 2-2 for most of the game, until Jordan Martinook took a pass from Jacob Slavin in the third, to slap in the go-ahead point. It was Martinook's first goal since February 1. The Canes also had help from Frederik Andersen, who had 21 saves. Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored the first point for Carolina. The Canes will host Ottawa tomorrow night at home.
Teen Girl Dies After Saturday Night Crowd Shooting
(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police say a 17-year-old girl was killed Saturday night after someone fired a shot into a crowd. It happened in the 1300 block of Ogden Street just before 10:00 p.m. Witnesses told police a group of people had gathered when a person fired toward the crowd and ran off. The teen who was shot in the head died at the hospital Sunday morning. No suspects have been identified but the investigation continues.
Three Teens Arrested For Suspected Burglary, Car Chase
(Winston-Salem, NC) - Police in Winston-Salem have taken three teens into custody after suspected burglary incidents and a city-wide car chase. It started overnight Saturday in the 200 block of Peace Haven Road. A resident told police they followed a pickup truck after they saw four people breaking into cars. Someone from the truck shot at the resident but missed. Officers joined in the chase near U.S. 421. The people in the truck finally were captured near Fifth Street and Cameron Avenue after they ran away from the truck. Three suspects were arrested but their names aren't available because of their ages.
Triad Schools Ranked in Top Five for NC College Affordability
(Greensboro, NC) -- Two Triad Universities are ranked in the top five of the most affordable North Carolina colleges. That's according to a new interactive tool from the New York Times that ranks nearly 900 public and private colleges in the country. UNC-Greensboro was number two in the state for having the lowest price of a little over 20-thousand-dollars for combined tuition, fees and housing for students. Winston-Salem State University came in fourth at just over 22-thousand and Wake Forest was ranked 26th for tuition of nearly 80-thousand-dollars.
NC House Eases School Nurse Requirements
(Raleigh, NC)-- The N.C. House has unanimously passed a bill that dilutes a requirement for hiring school nurses. Currently, they have to be nationally certified. House Bill 382 would allow non-certified registered nurses, who have at least two years of experience in a hospital or health clinic, to serve as school nurses. The legislation is being proposed due to what supporters say is a shortages of school nurses statewide. The bill now goes to the Senate.
Population Grown for State Remains Uneven
(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina's population has grown an estimated two-and-a-half percent over the last two-years, mostly due to people moving here from other states. The latest estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau, show the total population at nearly 11-million residents with the biggest part of that growth in three coastal counties. The populations of Brunswick, Currituck and Pender counties grew faster than any other between April 1st of 2020, and last July 1st. Forsyth County grew just under two percent for a total population of just over 389-thousand residents, while Guilford County grew at oh-nine percent to just over 546-thousand.
