(Polk County, NC) -- A Polk County woman is heading to prison for charges connected to her mother's death. Investigators discovered the mother's remains in a ravine off Highway 176 last year, which came five-years after her body was reported dumped into a river in Tryon. The daughter was previously convicted for stealing around 60-thousand-dollars'-worth of social security checks. She was sentenced to 19-months after pleading guilty to concealing the death yesterday.

Man Arrested For Assaulting Officers

(Asheville, NC) -- A man is accused of assaulting officers during an arrest in Asheville. Investigators say the man resisted when they went to Livingston Street last Saturday, as officers tried arresting him for communicating threats. Details of what happened in the assault are unclear, but one officer was treated and released from the hospital.

(Asheville, NC) -- Mobile home owners are going to pay more for insurance in North Carolina. The state's insurance commissioner was able to reduce initial increases of more than 50-percent. Residents should now expect a jump of between ten to 15-percent after negotiations were completed with the North Carolina Rate Bureau. This will save roughly 70-million-dollars over the increases originally proposed.

Stadium Changes Needed in Robbinsville

Senate Republicans Pass 30-Billion Dollar Biennial Spending Bill, Advancing It To The House

(Raleigh, NC) -- Members on the North Carolina Senate approved a massive 30-billion dollar two-year general fund budget Wednesday. One that offers tax cuts but smaller pay raises for teachers and state employees. The biennial budget, which sets spending at 29-point-eight billion for the first year and 30-point-nine billion in the second, was approved on a 36-13 vote, with seven Democrats siding with the Republican majority.

Durham Man Jailed On Charges Of Impersonating An Attorney

(Durham, NC) -- A Durham man wanted for impersonating a lawyer, has been arrested. Court records show 52-year old Johnny Carroll Clifton was taken into custody Wednesday, after a woman reported being swindled out of money and questioning the legitimacy of his law practice. Clifton was booked into the Wake County Jail and charged with practicing law without a license, felony obtaining property by false pretense and failure to appear in court.

Former UNC Guard Caleb Love Wont Be Allowed To Play At Michigan Next Season

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- Former UNC basketball guard Caleb Love has re-entered the transfer portal. Although he initially committed to play for Michigan, multiple sources confirmed on Wednesday that he was unable to enroll in school at Ann Arbor, because he didn't have the requisite credits. Person Found Critically Beaten at Sheetz Store

(Greensboro, NC) -- An assault victim is recovering at an area hospital after officials say they were critically beaten in Greensboro Wednesday night. A police Department news release says officers found the person when they were called to a Sheetz store on West Market Street for a report of an aggravated assault. The victim was taken by EMS to the hospital. The police investigation continues.

Moped Rider Killed in Collision with Car

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Winston-Salem police say a man who was riding on a moped has died after he collided with a car Wednesday afternoon. Investigators say a 58-year-old woman was driving north on Cleveland Avenue and began to make a left turn on to 12th Street. Police say she didn't yield the right of way and hit the moped and its driver. He died at the hospital a short time later.

House Advances School Choice Voucher Program

(Raleigh, NC) -- The North Carolina House has voted to expand vouchers for students of all levels of income to attend private schools. Members agreed along party lines to approve the measure 65-45 Wednesday. The bill is being sent to the Senate, where there's a companion measure. The House version would offer "opportunity scholarships." Many Democrats strongly spoke out against the concept because they say the idea takes money from public education and gives it to students who would use it for private school or otherwise could afford to pay.

Girl Missing Since 2017 Found In North Carolina

(Buncombe County, NC) -- An Illinois girl who disappeared six years ago has been reunited with her father in North Carolina. Officials with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children say Kayla Unbehaun was nine when she was taken by her mother, who did not have custody of her. Her father told police the two never came back from a camping trip six years ago. CNN reports that Kayla was seen at a store in Ashville by a person who recognized her from a TV show -- an episode of "Unsolved Mysteries" on Netflix.

Hurricanes Host Panthers Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Carolina Hurricanes are at home tonight for game one of seven of the NHL Eastern Conference Finals. Carolina hosts the Florida Panthers, who are fresh off a 4-1 series win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Canes also are coming off a 4-1 series win over the New Jersey Devils.
