Former WNC Congressman Indicted In Election Investigation

(Fulton County, GA) -- A former western North Carolina congressman is facing charges in Georgia's investigation over 2020 election interference. A grand jury in Atlanta indicted Mark Meadows for solicitation of oath of office violation and racketeering yesterday. The charges were among dozens filed against former president Donald Trump, attorney Rudy Giuliani and more than 15 others. Meadows served as Trump's chief of staff for a short time after he represented North Carolina's 11th district for seven-years.

Two Asheville Police Cars Burned

(Asheville, NC) -- The search is underway for a suspect who destroyed two Asheville police cars. The cruisers were set on fire in a parking lot on Lynndale Avenue early Monday morning. They were not occupied at the time. Anyone who may have seen anything is urged to call the Asheville Police Department.

Suspect Accused Of Killing Rutherford County Man

(Rutherford County, NC) -- A suspect is facing charges for the murder of a Rutherford County man. Investigators reportedly discovered the remains of Phillip Burr on property in Clover, South Carolina. He was last seen in November 2021. A grand jury indicted Dewayne Hall on first-degree murder charges last week.

One Dead In Macon County Fire

(Macon County, NC) -- The cause of a deadly fire is being investigated in Macon County. Firefighters were called out to the Cartoogechaye community early Monday morning, as a blaze overtook a home on Dalrymple Road. One man died from injuries in the fire. At least four fire departments joined in on the emergency efforts.

Henderson County Noted For Wine

(Henderson County, NC) -- A part of western North Carolina is landing among the best of the country's wine regions. USA Today readers just listed the Crest of the Blue Ridge in Henderson County at number-eight overall. The area was noted for its distinctive soil, elevation and high water quality. The Dahlonega Plateau in Georgia was the only other location in the southeast that was listed in the top-ten.

Part Of I-26 To Shut Down

(Buncombe County, NC) -- Drivers on I-26 around Asheville should be aware of lane closures starting later this evening. The interstate eastbound will close for a stretch of four-miles between I-40 and Airport Road, so that crews can remove existing lanes before new roadway is installed. The DOT will guide drivers to a detour in the meantime. The goal is to have the project complete for Wednesday traffic.

Former Biden Official From Charlotte Running For Office

(Charlotte, NC) -- A former Biden administration official from Charlotte is running for state office. Gabe Esparza has announced he's seeking the office of North Carolina treasurer in the 2024 election. The lone challenger in the Democratic primary for the seat is another Charlotte resident, Wesley Harris. Esparza served in the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Affordable Housing Apartments Approved In Rock Hill

(Rock Hill, SC) -- A new affordable housing project is coming to Rock Hill. The city council approved a project last night that will develop eleven-acres into the Magnolia Terrace Apartments for renters making 60-percent of the area's median income. WCNC reports a Charlotte-based developer plans to build more than 150 units in seven-buildings on the Heckle Boulevard property. The council voted to approve a nearly 18-million-dollar bond for the project.

One Dead In Morganton Fire

(Morganton, NC) -- A deadly fire is under investigation in Morganton. Firefighters pulled a man from a burning home on Port Street early Monday morning. The 43-year-old died at the scene. The fire took roughly 20-minutes to extinguish, but there's no word yet on the cause.

Charlotte Under Heat Advisory Again

(Charlotte, NC) -- Severe heat is sticking around the Piedmont again. The National Weather Services has issued yet another heat advisory for Charlotte today as temperatures rise into the 90s. With high humidity, the heat index is going to feel closer to 110-degrees. Residents are urged to avoid strenuous activities outside, and never leave children or pets in unattended cars.

Man Arrested After Shooting At ATMs

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is accused of firing his gun on several ATMs in the Charlotte area. The CMPD says the man opened fire at three Wells Fargo locations last Friday, as well as another in Belmont. It's unclear if he got away with anything. The man was arrested for shooting into occupied property and injury to personal property.

Panthers Wide Receiver Injured In Practice

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Panthers wide receiver is being evaluated for an injury. CBS Sports reports Terrace Marshall, Jr. was taken off the practice field by a cart yesterday. Head coach Frank Reich said Marshall tweaked something in his back, but didn't elaborate on how it might affect him going forward this week. The Panthers are slated to play the Giants on the road Friday night.

Severe Storms And Extreme Heat Advisories In Effect

(Raleigh, NC) -- Most of central North Carolina has been placed under a Level 2, Slight Risk of severe storms developing today. According to the National Weather Service, those storms could contain heavy rain, strong damaging winds, hail and flash flooding. The time frame in which the system is expected to move across the area is between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. In addition, an Extreme Heat Advisory will remain in effect today, as temperatures are once again, expected to reach into the upper 90's, with heat index values above 110 degrees.

Doctors Report ER Visits Spike Among Children With Heat-Related Illnesses

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- UNC Health is reporting a rise in heat related illnesses at its pediatric emergency room over the last few weeks. Doctors say most of the patients have been children who had been participating in outdoor sporting activities, or summer camps during periods of extreme heat. They're advising kids and adults to take frequent breaks and to hydrate often when outside.

Sheriff's Deputies In Wayne County Shoot, Kill Man Who Brandished Gun

(Wayne County, NC) -- The SBI is investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting in Wayne County yesterday, in which a man brandishing a shotgun was killed. It happened around 3 p.m. outside a home on Capps Bridge Road near Princeton. Officers responded to a call about a suspicious person with a gun. They arrived to find an adult male brandishing a shotgun and refusing to lay down his weapon. A preliminary report says the man was shot by at least one sheriff's deputy, after he pointed the gun at law enforcement. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Person County Man Fatally Shoots A Driver Who Ran Over And Killed His Son

(Person County, NC) -- Authorities in Person County are investigating an incident involving a father, who allegedly fatally shot a man after he struck and killed his son with a vehicle. It happened around 6 a.m. Monday near Dink Ashley Road near Timberlake. The Person County Sheriff's Office says when the driver stopped to call 911, the father, identified as Chad Woods, pulled out a gun and shot him. Both Jeffrey McKay and the 17-year-old boy died as the scene. Woods was later arrested and charged with second-degree murder and larceny of a motor vehicle.

Dozens Voice Opposition To Duke Health's Plan To Increase Utility Rates

(Durham, NC) -- The North Carolina Utilities Commission held a public hearing in Durham Monday night, to get input on a proposed rate hike by Duke Energy. The power company is seeking state approval for a nearly 20-percent increase over the next three years. If approved, the average customer's utility bill would go up by 10-percent in January of 2024, another four percent in 2025 and an additional four percent in 2026, for a total of around 26-dollars more per month. Most of those who spoke at the hearing were opposed to the rate increase.

Michael Oher Files Court Petition Claiming Tennessee Couple Never Legally Adopted Him

(Charlotte, NC) -- Former Carolina Panther Michael Oher, who was the subject of the Oscar winning film "The Blind Side", filed a petition in a Tennessee court on Monday, seeking to end a coservatorship with Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy. Documents claim the couple led Oher to believe they had adopted him when he was 16 years old, but instead had placed him under a conservatorship, which allowed them to make millions of dollars from the movie, while he was paid nothing.

Lawyers For Greensboro Boy Assaulted By Woman At Pool To Announce Lawsuit

(Greensboro, NC) -- Attorneys representing the Greensboro boy who was assaulted by a woman at a pool earlier this month are taking legal action. National civil rights attorneys Harry Daniels and Ben Crump and Greensboro attorney Jason Keith will announce today a federal lawsuit filed on behalf of 11-year-old Jace Lee-Eury. Viral video shows Kimberly Jennings assaulting the boy at the Sedgefield Gardens apartment complex. She is seen pouring soda over Lee-Eury before hitting him twice in the face. Jennings, the Sedgefield Gardens, and Sedgefield Realty Company are named plaintiffs in the suit. Jennings, the manager at Sedgefield Gardens, has been charged with assault in the incident.

Parents Charged After Mother, Daughter Stranded On Yadkin River

(Wilkes Co., NC) -- Parents are facing charges after the mother and their young daughter got stranded on the Yadkin River last month. Megan Waters is charged with one count felony child abuse and misdemeanor child abuse, while Harvey Wilkins faces two counts of misdemeanor child abuse. Authorities say Wilkins reported his wife, Waters and their daughter missing on July 16th. He claimed they got separated while rafting on the river during a storm the day before and got stranded the whole night. Later, Waters and the daughter pulled up in a car at Ronda Park and the family was reunited on land.

Two Men Wanted In Deadly Shooting At Eden Convenience Store

(Eden, NC) -- Police are searching for two men wanted in a deadly shooting earlier this month at a convenience store in Eden. Authorities say two people were shot at the J-Mart on Virginia Avenue on August 2nd while William Lindsey and Kwes Keen exchanged gunfire during a fight. The shooting victims were identified as Derek Hairston and Sierra Carter. Hairston died from his injuries on Sunday. Lindsey is wanted on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, while Keen is wanted for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Teen Dies After Car Crashes Into Home In Kernersville

(Kernersville, NC) -- A teen is dead after a car crashed into a home in Kernersville. The incident happened early Sunday in the 26-hundred block of NC 66. Grant Anderson died in the wreck. The 18-year-old was the only person in the vehicle. No one inside the home was injured and investigators say speed was a factor.

Several Homes Hit By Gunfire In Guilford Co.

(Guilford Co., NC) -- An investigation is underway after gunfire hit several homes in Guilford County. Authorities say three homes on Glenville Drive in Whitsett were shot into Saturday. No one was injured and no arrests have been made.
