Why are meal kits becoming more the rage?

The Bottom Line:

New survey uncovers who is ordering meal kits, and why they like them.

 The Full Story:

  • 25% of Americans purchased a meal kit last year, while 70% of those people are still purchasing them
  • The  biggest reason why folks rely on meal kits is that it saves time on  meal planning (46%) and they like the short prep and cook time (45%)
  • 86%  of folks wish meal kits would add a dessert option, while nearly half  of those who no longer purchase meal kits say they would contemplate  returning if the costs were lower

These  days it’s pretty apparent that while some folks like to eat a home  cooked meal, the last thing they want to do is put in the effort to shop  for all the things they need and do any preparing. For that reason,  meal kits, which offer pre-portioned ingredients and recipe  instructions, seem to be gaining in popularity.

According  to a new Harris Poll, 25% of Americans purchased a meal kit last year,  while 70% of those people are still purchasing them. The biggest reason  why folks rely on meal kits is that it saves time on meal planning (46%)  and they like the short prep and cook time (45%). Other things that  make meal kits attractive is that they save folks time on grocery  shopping (37%), they get them to try new recipes (36%) and they offer  healthier recipes (34%).

And  most folks are pretty satisfied with what they are getting in their  kits. In fact, 92% are pleased with the quality of their produce, while  91% are impressed with how fresh the meat is. But that doesn’t mean all  kits are perfect. Folks would like to see some improvements, with 86%  wishing they would add a dessert option, while nearly half of those who  no longer purchase meal kits say they would contemplate returning if the  costs were lower. What’s more, one third want even more convenience,  and say they’d purchase them if they were sold in their grocery store.
