Nearly 100 Chickens Rescued After Huge Opium Bust

The suspect arrested for growing opium in Catawba County on Tuesday could face more charges as investigators look into the possibility that cockfighting took place on the property.

Deputies returned to the property where they confiscated over 500-million dollars worth of poppy plants.  The deputies noticed wounds on the chickens during the drug bust.  Alongside Animal Control, they rescued 80 chickens and several dogs yesterday.

Officials are looking into whether or not someone illegally made the chickens fight.
