Buncombe County schools officials are asking parents to let students ride the school bus for state ridership week.
District transportation officials said ridership numbers for this week will determine distribution of state funding for individual school districts.
Head counts will be taken everyday through Friday on each bus route.
About 17,000 students ride buses to and from Buncombe County schools.
Any decrease in ridership could mean cuts to service and increased delays.
