Kidnapped Baby Found Safe

(Henderson County, NC) -- An infant allegedly kidnapped yesterday in Biltmore Park is now safe. Asheville Police say a mother and her seven-week-old baby were taken by a couple wearing ski masks yesterday afternoon. The mother was able to escape from the suspect's car while the baby was found outside a Henderson County home a few hours later. The suspects ditched the car and haven't been found.

NC Man Charged In 1985 Los Angeles Murder

(Rutherford College, NC) -- A North Carolina man is being charged in the 1985 murder of a television director in Los Angeles. Edwin Hiatt of Rutherford College is accused of beating and strangling Barry Crane to death inside his L.A. home. The case went cold until last year, when investigators made a fingerprint match that connected Hiatt to Crane's stolen car. Hiatt is set to appear in Burke County court this morning.

State Urging Measles Vaccinations

(Raleigh, NC) -- State health officials are urging North Carolinians to vaccinate themselves from the measles. The CDC is confirming more than 700 people have contracted measles nationwide since January 1st, with the closest outbreaks in Georgia and Tennessee. North Carolina's health director said this week that everyone should ensure they are up-to-date on their MMR vaccine. Measles is highly contagious and can be spread through coughing or sneezing.

Hickory Grandmother Arrested At Disney World

(Hickory, NC) -- A Hickory grandmother won't face charges in her arrest at Disney World last month. A security employee at one park allegedly found CBD oil in the purse of Hester Burkhalter. She says she was prescribed the oil in North Carolina to treat her arthritis, but it's illegal in Florida. Prosecutors decided to drop the charges.

One Dead In Marion Crash

(McDowell County, NC) -- McDowell County investigators are looking into details of a deadly wreck. A car crashed on Bill Cook Drive off Old Highway Ten in Marion last night. One person died at the scene. Others in the car were not injured.

Asheville Makes Water Improvements In Bee Tree Area

(Asheville, NC) -- The city of Asheville is trying to improve the water delivery system in the Bee Tree area. Water was cut-off to local residents yesterday as city crews worked to tie-in a large water pipe with existing lines. A city official told WLOS-TV that it should help protect residents from losing water during a flood. The Bee Tree area was without water for a few days last month when a pipe was damaged in flooding.

SC Senate Passes Panthers Bill

(Columbia, SC) -- South Carolina lawmakers are agreeing to give 115-million-dollars in tax breaks to the Carolina Panthers to move team headquarters. The state Senate passed the tax break bill yesterday with just hours to go in the legislative session. The Panthers are reportedly looking at land in Rock Hill to relocate its facilities, although they'll still play games in Charlotte. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster is expected to sign the bill.

Suspect Arrested For Deadly Stabbing

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is being charged in the uptown murder of a woman on her 62nd birthday. The CMPD says officers found Diane McClelland stabbed to death on College Street yesterday morning. James Curry Junior was arrested last night on North College Street for the killing. It's the 50th homicide of the year in Mecklenburg County.

Record Cocaine Bust Reported In Lincoln County

(Lincolnton, NC) -- A North Carolina man is facing charges in connection to the largest drug bust in Lincoln County's history. Deputies found nearly 120 pounds of cocaine in a traffic stop on Gastonia Highway Wednesday night. The drugs are worth over six-million-dollars. A Goldsboro man is in jail on a two-million-dollar secured bond for the felony drug charges.

Funeral For Mooresville Officer Today In Charlotte

(Mooresville, NC) -- The funeral service for a fallen Mooresville police officer is this morning in Charlotte. Thousands of law enforcement personnel from around the country are expected to be there when Officer Jordan Sheldon is laid to rest. He was killed during a traffic stop last weekend. The funeral service begins at eleven at Charlotte's Calvary Church.

Investigators Believe Drug Deal Led To Rowan County Murder

(Rowan County, NC) -- Rowan County investigators believe a teen was murdered earlier this week in a drug deal. Carlos Rosas is in jail for allegedly killing 19-year-old Michael Earley and then dismembering his body. Two young women were charged yesterday for helping conceal the murder. Earley disappeared from his Sides Road home on Sunday night and was found Wednesday.

Panthers' Olsen Donates Millions For Children's Clinic

(Charlotte, NC) -- A Carolina Panther is helping a Charlotte children's hospital build a new outpatient clinic. Tight end Greg Olsen and his foundation are donating two-and-a-half-million-dollars to Levine Children's. It will be called The HEARTest Yard Pediatric Center. The center will cater to children who need care for cardiovascular and congenital heart issues.

Hurricanes Lose Game One

(Boston, MA) -- The Hurricanes are going to try to come back against the Bruins in this playoff series. Yesterday in Boston, they lost game one of the Eastern Conference Final 5-2. The Canes had a 2-1 lead for most of the game, but the Bruins made a late game push and scored four goals in the third period. They play game two in Boston this Sunday. Games three and four will be in Raleigh.

Boston Radio Host Hangs Up On Canes Writer Over Southern Accent

(Boston, MA) -- A Boston sports radio host is in hot water after he hung up on a North Carolina sports writer over his accent. Fred Toucher had Chip Alexander, a writer for the News and Observer, on WBZ-FM Tuesday morning to talk about the upcoming Bruins Canes hockey game. Toucher hung up on him saying, that he couldn't take Alexander's Southern accent, and insinuated hockey and Southern accents didn't go together. Alexander said he's a little offended about Toucher's comments on his accent, but did say he didn't want this incident to get overblown.

Councilman's Wife Given Probation For Fatal Crash

(Cumberland Co., NC) -- The wife of a Fayetteville city councilman won't see any jail time for causing a crash that killed a postal worker. In 2017, Deborah Wright crashed her SUV into the back of a mail truck, killing 58-year-old Ricky Armwood. She's guilty of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. She wasn't speeding and there was no excessive speed, so prosecutors say this misdemeanor charge was the harshest penalty she could face. Yesterday, it was announced that Wright would only have to serve probation and have her driver's license revoked.

Women Arrested Chaining Themselves To Jail Protesting Bail System

(Durham, NC) -- Two women who chained themselves to the gate of the Durham County Detention Center are facing charges. They are members of the group Southerners on New Ground, and they chained themselves to the gate yesterday to protest the bail system. They called bail a ransom, and say many people are stuck in jail just because they don't have the money to post bail. The group raised money to post bail for six women so they can spend Mother's Day with their children.

STAYUMBL Driver Avoids Arrest, Pleads Guilty To Improperly Turning

(Durham Co., NC) -- The notorious Durham driver with license plates that read STAYUMBL is pleading guilty to a traffic violation. This week, a warrant was issued for Diana Mems' arrest after she didn't show up to court for traffic violations. Mems is known for driving wildly on the road and has been connected to more than 30 traffic violations since the year 2000. Her lawyer showed up to court yesterday, produced valid registration, and entered a guilty plea for her charge of improperly turning. Mems' arrest warrant has been rescinded.

Deputy On Trial For Excessive Force

(Wake Co., NC) -- A Wake County deputy is on trial for excessive force. Yesterday, Deputy Cameron Broadwell was in court for an incident last year where he and two other officers were seen on video beating Kyron Hinton. Hinton had already been awarded a settlement from the county, but he died of an overdose the day after he got the money. A jury is going to decide whether Broadwell went too far in the incident with Hinton.

Missing Baby Found Safe In Henderson Co.

(Henderson Co., NC) -- A baby who was kidnapped in Asheville is safe this morning. Seven-week-old Shaylie and her mother were reportedly taken yesterday afternoon at Biltmore Park. The mother managed to escape. Police say the baby was found in Henderson County around 8 p.m. FOX 8 reports a man found her by a rock near his driveway. Police are investigating.

Three People Hurt In Winston-Salem Shooting

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Three people are hurt after a drive-by shooting in Winston-Salem. It happened yesterday evening near Hutton Street and Link Road. Police say one woman was shot in the foot, another woman was grazed by a bullet and a man was shot in the buttocks. They're expected to be okay. No arrests have been made. An investigation is ongoing.

New Details Released In Rowan Co. Murder

(Rowan Co., NC) -- We're learning more information about the gruesome death of a teenager who vanished during a drug deal in Rowan County. Police say 19-year-old Michael Earley was assaulted and killed last weekend, and then his body was dismembered and buried in a secluded location. They say Earley got into an argument with the suspect, who he was selling marijuana to. Nineteen-year-old Carlos Rosas Junior is charged with murder and concealment of death. Two women who were there during the drug deal are also facing charges.

Tanker Truck Crashes, Catches Fire In Wilkes Co.

(Wilkes Co., NC) -- No one is seriously hurt after a fiery wreck involving a tanker truck in Wilkes County. The accident happened early yesterday morning outside a home on Highway 21 near Roaring Gap Church Road. The tanker truck driver says a vehicle ran him off the road, causing him to crash into a tree. The truck caught fire, and the fire spread to the home. So far, no charges have been filed.

(Undated) -- May is Foster Care Awareness Month, and thousands of children in North Carolina are still looking for their forever homes.
