Pregnant woman killed in Deaverview, unborn child survives
APD detectives are investigating a fatal shooting overnight in Deaverview Apartments. Cops a pregnant woman was shot around 11:30 PM Wednesday night. She later died at MIssion Hospital. Officers say her unborn child survived the shooting. Police tell us there are no suspects at this time.
Man Considered Armed And Dangerous In Custody
(Haywood Co., NC) -- A man who Haywood County deputies considered "armed and dangerous" is now in custody. The sheriff's office issued a warning yesterday after a man with a rifle threatened to kill another man. He was believed to be in the wooded area near Ferguson Supply. The sheriff's office announced last night the man had been arrested. He was not identified.
Asheville Police Looking For Missing 17-Year-Old
(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are on the lookout for a teenage boy who's been missing for several days. Seventeen-year-old Sadiq Jones was last seen on June 9th leaving Trinity Place. Police say he may be staying with friends in North Asheville. Jones is described as African American, about six-foot-one and 300 pounds. Anyone with information on his whereabouts its urged to call Asheville PD.
SC Mom Arrested After Confronting Bullies At Child's School
(Greenville Co., SC) -- A mom from upstate South Carolina is under arrest after confronting bullies at her son's school. Jamie Rathburn is accused of walking into Greenbrier Elementary in Greenville County and acting aggressively. She tells police there were numerous incidents at the school where her son was hit, kicked and shoved, and nothing was done about it. Rathburn says she was wrong for how she handled the situation but says standing up for her son was the right thing to do.
Haywood Co. Schools Updates Vaccination Protocol
(Haywood Co., NC) -- Haywood County Schools is updating its vaccination protocol after the recent spike in measles cases across the U.S. The district is now requiring students who aren't vaccinated against the measles to be removed from the school if another student becomes infected. The CDC says no cases have been confirmed in North Carolina this year, but there have been outbreaks in neighboring states.
Asheville Man Sentenced In Art Vandalizing Case
(Asheville, NC) -- A man is sentenced to five years probation for damaging an artist's display at the Asheville airport. Raphael Morales was also ordered to pay close to 30-thousand dollars in restitution. Prosecutors say he damaged a Jonas Gerard display at the airport earlier this year. Morales is also charged with vandalizing one of the artist's studios in the River Arts District.
Three Charlotte Men Accused Of Trafficking Marijuana
(Charlotte, NC) -- Three Charlotte men are behind bars in Georgia, accused of trafficking 70 pounds of marijuana. The suspects, who range in age from 28 to 34, were arrested Tuesday during a traffic stop by Georgia State Patrol. It was part of an ongoing investigation into drug-trafficking along I-85 from Atlanta to surrounding states. Troopers say the pot had a street value of roughly 200-thousand dollars.

UPDATE: Search Continues For Teen Missing In South Fork River
(Gaston Co., NC) -- Gaston County emergency crews say they're hopeful they'll find the teenager who vanished in South Fork River. Fourteen-year-old Ethan Britt and another teen went for a swim in the river in Spencer Mountain Monday evening when they became separated. One of the teens got stuck on an island and was rescued the following morning. Britt, however, is still missing. Crews said yesterday they're considering it a "rescue" operation until he's found.

Teenage Girl Accused Of Stabbing Man In Chest
(Alexander Co., NC) -- A 14-year-old girl is accused of stabbing a man in the chest in Alexander County. The girl was taken into custody yesterday after trying to escape into the woods. The incident happened at a home along Wood Road in Taylorsville. Deputies say the 39-year-old victim suffered life-threatening injuries. There's no word yet on what led to the stabbing.
Man Who Killed 3 Chapel Hill Muslim Students Sentenced To Life
(Chapel Hill, NC) -- The man who killed three young Muslim students in Chapel Hill will spend the rest of his life in prison. Craig Hicks pleaded guilty Wednesday to shooting 23-year-old Deah Barakat, his 21-year-old wife, Yusor Abu-Salha, and her 19-year-old sister, Razan Abu-Salha. Hicks was then sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole. Members of the young people's families spoke before sentencing and Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue apologized for initially describing the 2015 killings as relating to a parking dispute, instead of a hate crime.
Raleigh Crash Kills Motorcyclist, Sends SUV Driver To Hospital
(Raleigh, NC) -- A motorcycle rider is dead and the driver of an SUV is in the hospital after a crash in Raleigh. Police say it happened around 4:40 p.m. near North New Hope Road and James Road. The bike had slammed into the driver's door and was under the SUV when police arrived. A stretch of North New Hope Road was closed for more than three hours.
NC Sheriff's Association Backs ICE Cooperation Bill
(Raleigh, NC) -- The North Carolina Sheriff's Association is changing direction on a controversial immigration bill. The law enforcement group on Wednesday announced its support for House Bill 370. The updated measure requires local law enforcement agencies to cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE. Durham Sheriff Clarence Birkhead told ABC11 he believes ICE detainers, which ask local agencies to hold people so ICE can arrest them, are unconstitutional and his department will not uphold them.
Lawmakers Drop 1-Year Delay To Place Bright Students In Advanced Math
(Raleigh, NC) -- Lawmakers are scrubbing a proposal to give schools a one-year delay from having to place bright students in advanced math classes. The House on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a bill requiring schools to place students who score the highest level on state math tests in advanced math classes. The bill now goes back to the Senate, which unanimously approved an earlier vision of the bill.

American Hebrew Academy In Greensboro Suddenly Closes
(Greensboro, NC) -- The American Hebrew Academy in Greensboro is shutting its doors after two decades. The academy shut down this week without warning. Rabbi Yosef Plotkin said the academy as struggling financially. A Hebrew charter school in Florida, Ben Gamla Preparatory Academy, says it plans to offer all of the AHA students a spot there.
Death Penalty Sought Against Suspect In Murder Of Stokes Co. Man
(Stokes Co., NC) -- The man accused of killing an elderly Stokes County man earlier this year could be sentenced to death if convicted. Prosecutors announced their plans yesterday to seek the death penalty against Christian Willard. He's accused of killing 87-year-old Arzell Tuttle, who vanished in early January. The victim's body was later discovered in Carroll County, Virginia. Family members say Willard and Tuttle were acquaintances.

Chapel Hill Man Enters Guilty Plea In 2015 Fatal Shooting
(Durham, NC) -- A Chapel Hill man is pleading guilty to killing three Muslim students in their condo in 2015. Craig Hicks agreed yesterday to three consecutive life sentences after prosecutors took the death penalty off the table. At the time of the shootings, police said Hicks claimed he was provoked by arguments over parking spaces at the condominium complex. The families of the students say the murders were hate crimes.
Two People Hurt After Multi-Car Wreck In Winston-Salem
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Two people are in the hospital after a multi-car wreck in Winston-Salem. It happened yesterday afternoon at U.S. 311 at Union Cross Road. The crash involved an 18-wheeler, a car and a dump truck filled with dirt. State troopers say the dump truck ended up flipped over in the median. They say the two people hurt are expected to be okay.
