Sinkhole Debris Causing Problems

(Asheville, NC) -- A large sinkhole in Asheville is continuing to cause problems. WLOS-TV is reporting the hole in a Merrimon Avenue parking lot has re-opened for a third time. Tons of debris from the sinkhole have now traveled downstream and completely filled up an ecofilter wetland in the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary. The opening had reached about 36-feet across before crews first filled it in with road bond last week.

Henderson County Man Arrested In Jet Ski Death

(Burke County, NC) -- A Henderson County man is facing charges connected to a deadly boating accident on Lake James. Two jet skis crashed into each other on the night of July 4th between Benfield's Landing and the new section of the state park in Burke County. One man died at the scene. Edward Muniz was arrested for a charge of felony death by impaired boating.

WNC Theme Park Up For Sale

(Maggie Valley, NC) -- An old theme park in Maggie Valley is up for sale. Ghost Town in the Sky is back on the market for just under six-million-dollars. WLOS-TV says plans to re-open the park hit a snag earlier this year when vandals damaged the property and stole costumes. Ghost Town first opened in 1961, but it has closed and re-opened several times over various issues.

State Offering New License Plate With U.S. Motto

(Raleigh, NC) -- A new license plate is available through the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. Motorists can now purchase a plate that features the motto of the United States, In God we trust, at the top. The bottom of the plate contains the state motto, To be rather than to seem. It was released for the first time this month.

Road Construction To Shut Down U.S. 74 East In Jackson County

(Jackson County, NC) -- Road construction will cause some detours in Jackson County for over a month. Eastbound lanes of U.S. 74 are expected to be closed as crews work on the highway's bridge ramp at U.S. 441. Drivers will be directed to take the Hyatt Creek exit as a detour. More work is being done about ten miles away at mile marker 78.

Increase In Dogs At Shelter After July 4th

(Asheville, NC) -- Fireworks on the Fourth of July may have caused an uptick in dogs at the Buncombe County Animal Shelter. Shelter staff told WLOS-TV that more than 20 dogs were turned in at the end of the week, and only a few were claimed. Anyone with a missing pet can check out the Asheville Humane Society's website for a picture.

Police Chief To Address Violence At Council Meeting

(Charlotte, NC) -- Community safety is expected to be a big topic at tonight's Charlotte City Council meeting. NBC Charlotte is reporting Police Chief Kerr Putney and District Attorney Spencer Merriweather will speak to the board about what's being done to address a rise in violent crimes this year. The 2019 homicide count is up to 60 in Charlotte, which has already surpassed all of last year.

Four Injured In Shooting Outside McDonald's

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a shooting that injured four people outside a McDonald's early Saturday. Officers say gunfire erupted between two armed men and someone inside a ride-share car in the restaurant parking lot on Eastway Drive. Two people inside the car were shot, including a woman who reportedly suffered life-threatening injuries. The two armed men were also injured.

Family Reportedly Tied Up In Home Invasion

(Gaston County, NC) -- Gaston County police are investigating a home invasion where a family was allegedly tied up overnight Saturday. The homeowner told WSOC-TV that a masked man stole his wallet after tying his young daughter and her grandmother up in a bedroom on Starlight Drive in northwest Gaston County. He says the suspect tied him up on the back porch. None of the victims were injured.

Fire Destroys Home, Storage Units

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a blaze that destroyed several structures yesterday. Flames swept through a mobile home and three storage units on Dillard Valley Road. A neighbor called in the fire because no one was home at the time. No injuries were reported.

Panthers' Fan 'Catman' Dies

(Charlotte, NC) -- A well-known Carolina Panthers superfan is dead at the age of 62. Greg "Catman" Good spent his time supporting the team at Bank of America Stadium dressed in a blue wig and a stuffed Panther draped over his shoulders. Good's son said his father passed away on Friday. Carolina coach Ron Rivera said on Twitter that Catman was the first iconic Panther fan to greet him and he appreciated his love for the team.

Knights Raising Money To Support UNCC Shooting Victims

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Charlotte Knights are raising money to help support the victims of the UNC Charlotte shooting and their families. The team is taking bids through tomorrow night on game-worn autographed 49ers-themed hats. Proceeds from the auction go to the Niner Nation fund. Shooting survivor Drew Pescaro took the mound last night to throw out the first pitch at BB&T Ballpark before a game against the Norfolk Tides.

Big Cleanup After Car Crashes Into Laundromat

(Raleigh, NC) -- A Raleigh laundromat is a mess after someone drove their car into the building Sunday night. It happened just before 8 p.m. at a laundromat on the 16-hundred-block of Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard. The driver ran off but is "known to police," according to CBS17. One person had minor injuries and people who were in the place returned to washing and drying their clothes after the excitement was over.

6 Seriously Injured In Apparent Head-On Crash On Sawmill Road

(Raleigh, NC) -- Six people, including three children, are seriously injured after an apparent head-on crash on Sawmill Road in Raleigh Sunday afternoon. Authorities say two vehicles slammed head-on at Sawmill Road near Valley Run Drive shortly after 2 p.m. Sawmill Road was closed for a time while police investigated and crews cleaned up debris.

Durham I-85 Crash Leaves Raleigh Man Critically Injured, Facing Charges

(Durham, NC) -- A Raleigh man is critically injured and will face charges after a crash that shut down a stretch of I-85. Durham police say 32-year-old James Dingle's car hit a tractor-trailer on U.S. 70, was hit by another car then sailed off the road and slammed into two bridge pillars, landing at the edge of I-85. The northbound lanes were closed for a time after the crash just after 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Police suspect Dingle was speeding and had been drinking.

Crabtree Valley Mall Macy's Still Closed After Arson Fire

(Raleigh, NC) -- The Macy's in Crabtree Valley Mall is still closed after a fire late last week. Macy's said over the weekend the store will be closed until further notice after someone deliberately set fire in a fitting room Friday evening. The fire damaged 25-percent of the building. No one was hurt and the store's sprinkler system put out the fire but water damaged merchandise and fixtures.

Three Teens Arrested In Connection With Drive-By Shooting

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Three teenagers are in jail in connection with the drive-by shooting death of a five-year-old boy in Winston-Salem. Seventeen-year-old Oscar Mendez-Rodriguez, a 14-year-old male and a 15-year-old male are all facing murder charges. Police say the teens were randomly shooting from their car in the Cole Village area Saturday when the child was shot in the head. He died at the hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Woman Shot By Greensboro PD ID'd

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro police are identifying the woman who was shot by an officer when she allegedly tried to flee a crime scene. Paulickia Hairston is accused of taking off in her car and driving toward officers who were responding to a disorder call. It happened late Saturday night on Willomore Street. One of the officers opened fire, and the woman was shot. She got out of her car and took off on foot but was arrested. The woman was not seriously hurt.

Investigation Underway After Baby Dies In Winston-Salem

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- An investigation is underway in Winston-Salem after a seven-month-old boy was killed. Officers responded to an apartment near Peters Creek Parkway and Ethel Drive last Thursday after the baby was found unresponsive. There's no word on how he died, but police are calling it a homicide. It's not clear whether any arrests where made in the case.

Flash Floods Cause Street Flooding In Greensboro

(Greensboro, NC) -- Parts of the Triad are bracing for more rain after flash flooding yesterday. Thunderstorms flooded streets in the Big Tree Way and Wendover area of Greensboro. The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Warning through yesterday evening. Forecasters say more rain is in store today and tomorrow. Drivers are urged to use caution.

Family Left Homeless After Winston-Salem Fire

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A family of three is homeless after their home in Winston-Salem caught fire. The blaze broke out early yesterday morning near Reynolds Park. Fire officials say it started in the kitchen. No one was hurt. The family is being helped out by the Red Cross.
