(Blowing Rock, NC) -- A man is now facing charges in connection to a deadly hit-and-run in Blowing Rock. State troopers arrested 55-year-old Charles Bean yesterday at his home in Granville County outside Durham. He's accused of fleeing the scene after striking a cyclist on Highway 221 one week ago. Tips from the public helped lead investigators to his arrest on felony hit-and-run charges.

NASCAR Car Hauler Wrecks Off I-40

(McDowell, NC) -- The highway patrol is investigating the crash of a car hauler for a NASCAR Xfinity Series team in McDowell County. The number-ten Kaulig Racing transporter reportedly ran through a guardrail and down an embankment along Interstate 40 Wednesday afternoon. The driver and a passenger were said to be alert, but suffered serious injuries. Kaulig Racing says it will still field two entries at the Kansas Speedway this weekend.

Ex-Buncombe Administrator Reports To Prison

(Asheville, NC) -- A former assistant Buncombe County manager is in prison. Jon Creighton reported this week to the United States Penitentiary in Pine Knot, Kentucky to begin an 18-month sentence for conspiracy charges related to a Buncombe County corruption case. WLOS-TV says Michael Greene, the son of ex-county manager Wanda Greene, is serving his sentence in Pine Knot as well.

Mission Health Reports Data Breach

(Asheville, NC) -- Mission Health is reporting a data breach on its website. The health system recently sent out a letter to patients to advise a malicious code was found on its online store that was present between March 2016 and June 2019. Anyone who purchased health products on the website may have had their credit card information stolen. Mission Health says no medical records were accessed.

Patchy Frost, Gusty Winds This Morning In WNC

(Undated) -- A chill is in the air in Western North Carolina. The National Weather Service says residents may wake up to patchy frost in the valleys of the southwestern mountains as temperatures hit the 30s. It's expected to remain pretty gusty as well. A wind advisory is in effect until eleven this morning along the crest of the Blue Ridge in northwest North Carolina. Gusts could reach as high as 50-miles-an-hour.

Henderson County Schools Studying Year-Round Calendar

(Henderson County, NC) -- Henderson County Public Schools is exploring a possible switch to a year-round calender. The Hendersonville Times-News is reporting the superintendent was authorized at Tuesday night's meeting to form a committee to weigh the issue. The plan would be to start August 12th and end before Memorial Day, with the regular 180 days of instruction. The summer break would be two weeks shorter than it is now.

Hundreds Of Birds Crash Into NASCAR Hall Of Fame Building

(Charlotte, NC) -- Carolina Waterfowl Rescue is taking donations to help treat a large group of birds that crashed into Charlotte's NASCAR Hall of Fame building. An estimated 300 chimney swifts flew into the building's windows on Tuesday night, which killed around 100 of the birds. Experts say the chimney swifts can be lured by lighted windows. The rescue group is accepting donations and volunteers to help feed and nurture the injured birds back to health.

One Shot To Death In Chester

(Chester, SC) -- Police in Chester, South Carolina are looking for the suspect in a deadly shooting. A 21-year-old man was found shot to death on Dawson Drive last night around six. A neighbor told NBC Charlotte that she witnessed the shooter running as he pulled the trigger. Chester investigators say there is a person of interest in the case.

CMPD Police Chief Expects To Continue With Retirement Plans

(Charlotte, NC) -- CMPD Police Chief Kerr Putney isn't expecting to change his retirement plans. Charlotte and state attorneys are in the midst of discussing Putney's decision to retire at the end of the year and then come back to serve as chief in the spring. He plans to stay through the Republican National Convention. The chief said during yesterday's weekly briefing that his intent is to retire, but he'll readjust if necessary after the attorneys talk things through.

Body Found At West Charlotte Strip Mall

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating the discovery of a body in west Charlotte. The body was found near the Shoe Warehouse in a Freedom Drive strip mall early Wednesday night. Police haven't said what they believe to be the cause of death.

Gaston County Police Seek Kidnapping Suspect

(Gaston County, NC) -- A man who allegedly kidnapped and assaulted a woman in Gaston County is at-large. A woman told Gaston County police that she was assaulted for three days at a home in Kings Mountain. Investigators searched the home of 47-year-old Joel Stroupe, but couldn't find him yesterday. The victim was hospitalized for her injuries.

Panthers Submit Land Plans For New Headquarters

(Rock Hill, SC) -- Some preliminary plans for the Carolina Panthers' new team headquarters in Rock Hill are in. The organization has submitted a rezoning request for 230-plus acres, which includes Panthers' HQ, office space and retail space. The current team headquarters and Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte covers just over 50 acres. Panthers' owner David Tepper is also reportedly eying some property at the Eastland Mall site in east Charlotte for a potential Major League Soccer team headquarters.

3 Pedestrians Killed In Triangle Crashes

(Undated) -- Authorities are investigating three separate crashes that killed pedestrians on Triangle streets and roads Wednesday night. A man was fatally injured when he was hit by a car on Timber Drive just north of Highway 70 in Garner a little before 7:30 p.m. In Raleigh, a man was hit and killed in a crash at Six Forks and East Millbrook roads about a half-hour later. And, a 14-year-old girl was killed Wednesday evening when she walked in front of an SUV on NC-55 in Holly Springs.

Police, Administrators Investigate Threat Written On Apex Friendship High School Wall

(Apex, NC) -- School administrators and law enforcement officers are investigating a threat of mass violence at Apex Friendship High School. The threat was written on the wall of a girls' bathroom. It warned students not to come to school Friday because someone was going to bring a gun and "hurt everything in my path." School officials believe the threat is a hoax but they've told parents they're actively looking into the threat and trying to find who wrote it.

Former Raleigh Elementary School Teacher Charged With Child Sex Crimes

(Raleigh, NC) -- A former Raleigh elementary school teacher is charged with child sex crimes. Police arrested and jailed 39-year-old Peter Moody, who was in court Wednesday. Prosecutors say Moody committed the crimes while teaching third grade at Beaverdam Elementary School from 2017 until resigning at the end of the 2018-19 school year. The alleged sexual misconduct involved two girls whom teachers said Moody would take out of class, telling them he needed to grade papers.

Methodist University Hosting Anti-Racism Workshop

(Fayetteville, NC) -- Methodist University hosts an anti-racism workshop this weekend. Organizers say the workshop will address what they call the "often subtle, yet harmful patterns of behavior" that lead to many forms of racism. The workshop also will take aim at blatant signs of racism and more reserved racism known as implicit bias. The workshop is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Matthews Ministry Center on the MU campus.

Woman Accused Of Abducting Greensboro Toddler Facing New Charges

(Greensboro, NC) -- The woman accused of abducting three-year-old Ahlora Lindiment is now accused of abducting a second child. N'denezsia [[ Indonesia ]] Lancaster is charged with kidnapping two-year-old Zakiyah Woodard on October 9th, the same day Lindiment went missing. Police say the alleged kidnapping also happened near Claremont Home Apartments where Lindiment was taken. Both children are safe with their families, and Lancaster is in jail.

Worker In Davidson Co. Fends Off Possible Robber

(Davidson Co., NC) -- An investigation is underway in Davidson County where a worker shot back at a would-be robber. The scene unfolded yesterday morning at The Little Fish House in Thomasville. Davidson County sheriff's deputies say an attempted robber tried to get into the business, and when he was denied access, he allegedly pulled out a gun and opened fire. Deputies say a worker returned fire, and the suspect took off. They're currently reviewing surveillance footage in hopes of identifying him.

Rockingham Co. Sheriff's Officials Searching For Armed And Dangerous Man

(Rockingham Co., NC) -- Rockingham County sheriff's deputies are searching for a man who they say is armed and dangerous. Twenty-eight-year-old Jordan Dickerson is accused of shooting a man several times early yesterday morning in Ruffin. Deontae Deshawn was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Anyone with information on Dickerson's whereabouts is urged to call RCSO.

Winston-Salem Man Arrested On Drug-Trafficking Charges

(Rowan Co., NC) -- A Winston-Salem man is under arrest on drug-trafficking and other charges. Rowan County sheriff's officials say Deionte Keaton led them on a chase Tuesday before leaving his car at the Rolling Hills Apartments in Salisbury. He was found hiding in a dumpster at a nearby food store. Keaton is facing several charges, including trafficking heroin and eluding police.

Trader Joe's Opening In Greensboro Next Week

(Greensboro, NC) -- Trader Joe's is opening in Greensboro next week. Doors officially open at the location on Battleground Avenue one week from today. A ceremonial ribbon-cutting will take place that morning, complete with live music, tastings and giveaways.
