Vaccine Lottery Winner Announced This Morning

(Raleigh, NC) -- Governor Roy Cooper is revealing the winners of the state's first vaccine lottery sweepstakes this morning. A one-million-dollar drawing was held last Wednesday to select an adult who's at least partially vaccinated against COVID-19. A kid between 12-and-17 was also chosen to win a scholarship. The winners are announced at ten.

Expansion At Harrah's Resort Close To Completion

(Cherokee, NC) -- Crews are wrapping up a major expansion at the Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort. Officials just announced the 250-million-dollar project should be completed by this fall. A new 19-story hotel tower and 83-thousand-square-feet of convention space are some of the major parts of the expansion in Cherokee. A Harrah's general manager said it will further show the resort is truly a destination unlike any other in the Carolinas.

Henderson County Expands July Fourth Celebration

(Henderson County, NC) -- Henderson County is planning a big celebration for July 4th. Four blocks of downtown Hendersonville will host musical guests, arts, food trucks and more on Sunday to commemorate Independence Day. The county is also helping its residents find out where they'll be able to see the fireworks display with the launching of a big red balloon. If you can see the balloon from where you're located, you'll be able to see the display.

Search Scaled Back For Missing Child

(Hawkins County, TN) -- The search for a missing five-year-old girl from Tennessee is scaling back. Numerous agencies from North Carolina have helped look for Summer Wells since she disappeared on June 15th. Search operations will continue using more specialized teams from the local, state and federal level. Wells' family said she was in the garden outside their Hawkins County home when she disappeared.

Jabil Breaks Ground On Hendersonville Plant

(Henderson County, NC) -- Work on a new manufacturing plant in Hendersonville is underway. A groundbreaking ceremony was held last Thursday for Jabil Healthcare, which will use the 160-thousand-square-foot facility to produce plastic components for pharmaceutical applications. The 27-million-dollar project is expected to be completed in around a year. The company will employ 150 workers at the plant.

Bike Rally Attracts Thousands In Maggie Valley

(Maggie Valley, NC) -- An annual motorcycle rally in the mountains is another success. WLOS-TV reports thousands showed up in Maggie Valley over the weekend to take part in the Thunder in the Smokies Rally. The event also serves as a fundraiser for local nonprofits. Organizers are holding another big rally in Maggie Valley in September.

Child Dead After Street Racer Hits Car

(Gaston County, NC) -- The highway patrol is investigating street racing that led to a child's death in Gaston County. A car speeding around 100-miles-an-hour reportedly lost control and slammed head-on into another car on U.S. 74 Saturday night. A six-year-old child died from injuries early Sunday morning, while his father still remains hospitalized with serious injuries. Charges are pending.

Union County Teen Makes Spelling Bee Finals

(Union County, NC) -- A Union County teen has a chance to be the country's best speller. Sreethan Gajula [[ shree-than gah-JOO-lah ]] is one of eleven finalists in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which will be decided one week from Thursday. The 14-year-old attends Marvin Ridge Middle School. Gajula is the only representative from North Carolina in the finals.

CMPD Investigates East Charlotte Homicide

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is gathering details in a deadly shooting. A 42-year-old man was killed late Saturday night on Vanderbrook Road in east Charlotte. Three suspects are facing murder charges in a separate Charlotte shooting. Investigators say a man was shot to death inside a hotel room on Westpark Drive early Saturday.

Body Recovered On Lake Norman

(Cornelius, NC) -- The search for a missing man on Lake Norman is over. Cornelius fire investigators say crews recovered the body of 30-year-old Eric Grant early Sunday afternoon. Grant reportedly disappeared while boating on Friday. A fire captain is reminding boaters to wear life jackets.

Meck Detention Officer Stabbed By Inmate

(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- An inmate is accused of attacking an officer at the Mecklenburg County jail. The sheriff's office confirms a detention officer was taken to the hospital after being stabbed on Friday. The officer's condition is unclear at this time.

American Airlines Offering Flights For Vaccinated People

(Charlotte, NC) -- American Airlines is giving away two roundtrip tickets to vaccinated people in the Charlotte area. Those who were vaccinated, or showed up with COVID vaccination cards, at the Summerstock Charlotte Festival yesterday were entered into the drawing. An American executive said the airline was proud to help boost vaccination rates in Charlotte. American's second-largest hub is based at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Almost A Million And A Half North Carolinians Expected To Travel This Weekend

(Raleigh, NC) -- The number of people expected to travel this Fourth of July holiday weekend is expected to be the second highest on record. That from Triple-A, which issued a prediction last week that more than 47-million Americans will take to the roadways and skies, an increase of nearly 40-percent over the same period in 2020. In North Carolina, the automotive agency is estimating around one-point-four million people will travel at least 50-miles or more from their homes this holiday weekend, an increase of 35-percent over last year's level.

Booze It & Lose It Campaign Now In Full Operation In North Carolina

(Raleigh, NC) -- Motorists traveling on North Carolina roadways are being forewarned that multiple law enforcement agencies will be out conducting sobriety tests at checkpoints in all 100-counties. It's all part of the North Carolina Department of Transportation's annual 'Booze It & Lose It' campaign, also known as Operation Firecracker. Motorists caught driving drunk or impaired could be forced to pay hefty fines, lose their driving privileges or even jail time. So far this year, 145-people in North Carolina have died in alcohol related auto accidents.

Man Suspected Of Killing A Wake Forest Woman Captured In Missouri Sunday

(Franklin County, NC) -- A Cary man wanted in connection with the death of a Wake Forest woman, has been captured in Missouri. According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, 45-year old Bradley Hines was arrested and taken into custody Sunday morning by authorities in Jefferson City Missouri. Arrest records show Hines was apprehended after leading law enforcement officers on a high speed chase. A first degree murder warrant was issued for Hines after the body of Heather Guild of Wake Forest was discovered last Thursday inside a home on Gilcrest Farm Road. ABC-11 is reporting Hines was also Guild's boss at an auto repair shop. Hines is now awaiting extradition back to North Carolina.

Three Shootings, Two Of Them Fatal, Reported In Fayetteville Sunday

(Fayetteville, NC) -- Authorities in Fayetteville are investigating three shootings that occurred within a 12-hour period over the weekend. The most recent happened Sunday night on Oakland Drive near Fayetteville State University. One person was wounded and taken to a nearby hospital. No word on their condition. Earlier in the day two people were killed in separate shootings. The first occurred around 6:15 a.m. along the 500-block of School Street. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Less than an hour later another man was shot on Doc Bennett Road. He also died of his injuries at the scene.

'No Justice, No Peace' March In High Point

(High Point, NC) -- Some community members in the Triad are coming together against police violence. A "No Justice No Peace" march was held in High Point Saturday in support of Fred Cox Junior. He was shot and killed by a Davidson County sheriff's deputy in November 2020. No charges were filed in the case. Some of the folks who attended the event included Breonna Taylor's mom and family members of Daunte Wright and Andrew Brown.

Child Found Dead In Car In Gastonia

(Gastonia, NC) -- An investigation is underway in Gastonia where a toddler was found dead in a hot car. The two-year-old child was found in a vehicle parked outside Industrial Fabricators around 4 p.m. Thursday, according to "The Charlotte Observer." Investigators are not sure how long the child had been in there. Right now, they're calling it a "tragic mistake." The national Kids and Car Safety advocacy group says so far this year, five children have died in hot cars in the U.S.

Man, Baby Killed In Winston-Salem Apartment Fire

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A man and a ten-month-old child are dead after an apartment fire in Winston-Salem. It happened early yesterday morning on White Meadow Lane. An 18-year-old woman in the home was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The cause is believed to be unattended cooking.

Forsyth Co. Woman Sentenced In Newborn's Death

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Forsyth County woman is sentenced to 60 days in jail for leaving her newborn baby's body in a plastic tub outside of Planned Parenthood. Jennifer Crow pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter last Thursday. She left her infant daughter outside the office in Winston-Salem more than a decade ago. Crow told the judge she didn't know her baby had died until police questioned her several years later. She was also sentenced to five years' probation.
