Congressman Caught With Gun At Airport

(Charlotte, NC) -- Western North Carolina's Congressman is accused of trying to go through an airport checkpoint with a gun for the second time. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says Madison Cawthorn was cited with a misdemeanor charge yesterday after a loaded gun was found in his bag at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. He was also found with an unloaded pistol at the Asheville Regional Airport last year, but was never criminally charged. Henderson County's sheriff issued a warning to Cawthorn after he was spotted with a knife at a school board meeting in 2021 as well.

(Asheville, NC) -- Early voting is about to begin for primary elections in North Carolina. Voters are able to cast early ballots beginning tomorrow through May 14th. Buncombe County is offering ten locations during the period. Same day registration is also being offered.

Former Buncombe Commissioner Denied Appeal

(Buncombe County, NC) -- The Court of Appeals is ruling against former Buncombe County Commissioner Ellen Frost. She's served a six-month sentence for misapplying over half-a-million-dollars of county money into the Tryon International Equestrian Center. A three-judge panel stated yesterday that Frost was adequately charged and the judgment of the court was affirmed. The decision was made based on arguments in written briefs.

Buncombe Sheriff Outlaws No-Knock Warrants

(Buncombe County, NC) -- No-knock warrants are no longer allowed in Buncombe County. Sheriff Quentin Miller has modified an internal policy with a new 20-page policy. He said entering a residence or business without notification is a high-risk endeavor for law enforcement officers. Asheville police aren't supposed to serve a no-knock warrant unless an officer's safety is compromised.

Juvenile Charged In Yancey County School Threat

(Yancey County, NC) -- A juvenile is accused of making a threat at a Yancey County school. An elementary school was locked down Monday after it was reported someone had a gun on campus. The district's superintendent revealed yesterday that a juvenile suspect was charged with a felony for calling the threat in. Half-a-dozen other schools in the region have been the subject of threats earlier this month.

Asheville Council Reviewing COVID Funds Distribution

(Asheville, NC) -- The Asheville city council is trying to figure out how 18-million-dollars in COVID relief funds will be spent. The Citizen-Times reports 17 businesses and organizations have pitched ideas on why they should receive some of the money. Some of the proposals include using the money for the homeless, community engagement and inclusivity initiatives.

Reward Offered In Search For Burke County Murder Suspect

(Burke County, NC) -- A reward is being offered for the capture of a Burke County murder suspect. U.S. Marshals have been looking for Nolan Smith, who is accused of killing 35-year-old Jonathan Ross last Friday. Ross was found dead in the middle of a street in Connolly Springs, but the cause of death hasn't been confirmed. Investigators announced yesterday that 25-hundred-dollars is being offered for information leading to the arrest of Smith.

President Commutes Sentence Of Asheville Man

(Charlotte, NC) -- President Biden is commuting the sentence of a Charlotte man. Kelvin Beaufort has been serving time for conspiracy charges related to cocaine possession and destruction. He was one of dozens-of-cases involving non-violent drug charges that Biden decided to commute yesterday. Three pardons ere issued as well.

CMS Approves Operating Budget

(Charlotte, NC) -- An operating budget is in place for next school year at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. The CMS board of education approved a plan of just over two-billion-dollars yesterday. The plan includes more pay for teachers, funding for college readiness work, and mental health needs. The Mecklenburg County Commission must now approve the spending plan.

The lump sum payment ended up being under half-a-million-dollars.
