(Asheville, NC) -- A body found in Asheville is identified as a Georgia man. Investigators say 22-year-old Nicholas Thomason was discovered in a creek off Depot Street late Monday morning. The death isn't considered to be suspicious. Thomason had reportedly been in the Asheville area for several months.

(Haywood County, NC) -- Congressman Madison Cawthorn is looking to root out certain members of his political party. The Republican sent out a long post on Instagram yesterday on the heels of his primary defeat to state Senator Chuck Edwards, who is moving on to the general election in the District Eleven race. Cawthorn said it's time for the rise of the new right and for dark MAGA to take command. He said weak members of his party must be defeated.
Hundreds To Receive Pay Increase In Buncombe
(Buncombe County, NC) -- Hundreds of Buncombe County employees are receiving pay raises. Commissioners discussed a study last night that resulted in a movement in the county's compensation plan. The board approved a proposal to raise minimum wage to over 17-dollars-an-hour, effective this Sunday. It will affect more than 600 county employees.
Groundbreaking Soon For Affordable Housing In Asheville
(Asheville, NC) -- An affordable housing project is close to breaking ground on West Haywood Street in Asheville. The Citizen-Times reports the neighborhood's community development board closed on a one-acre property in late April. Developers are expected to build 45 affordable housing unit on the property. The land cost roughly one-point-three-million-dollars.
Memorial Day Events Scheduled In WNC
(Asheville, NC) -- A Memorial Day ceremony is being planned for Pack Square Park in Asheville. Three three-o-clock service on May 30th will feature words from keynote speaker retired Lieutenant Colonel Spencer Hardaway, who now serves as a pastor. Memorial wreaths will be presented to honor members of the Armed Services who have sacrificed their lives. A service is also planned at Black Mountain's Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
Hendersonville Music Series Resumes

Plane Skids Off Charlotte Roadway
(Charlotte, NC) -- Airport officials are looking into what caused an airplane to veer off the runway in Charlotte. An American Airlines flight ran off track at Charlotte Douglas International Airport before taking off for Miami yesterday. The passengers were brought safely back to the gate before being transferred to other flights. The plane is now being inspected.
County Offering CMS Half Of Requested Budget Increase
(Charlotte, NC) -- Mecklenburg County's manager is proposing a cutback on requested funds from CMS. The school district is looking for an additional 40-million-dollars from the county in this year's budget, but county manager Dena Diorio is willing to give up around half of that. More than half of the additional 40-million from CMS was scheduled to go to teacher investment.
One Killed During Charlotte Robbery
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a homicide in northeast Charlotte. Investigators say a man was shot to death during a robbery on Blackhawk Road early Thursday morning. The suspect reportedly ran away from the scene at an apartment complex. Officers are looking for the public's help in finding the suspect.
Man Arrested After Shots Fired At CATS Bus
(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is accused of firing several shots at a CATS bus in south Charlotte. WSOC-TV reports a man pulled out a gun after trying to flag down a bus in the middle of Nations Ford Road, but the driver decided to keep going Wednesday morning. No one was injured. Officers arrested the man later in the day on multiple charges.
Cheerwine Festival Changes Headliner Due To Illness

Grammy Award-winning Blues Traveler has called off three show this weekend, including the Salisbury appearance, due to an artist illness. (Durham, NC) -- Authorities in Durham are investigating social media threats made against a school. According to the sheriff's office, the threat was made against Southern High School on Thursday. Law enforcement and school officials were able to get to the root of the posts and no one was hurt. Authorities did not announce any charges against the individual responsible in this case.
Name Released of Victim in Fatal Car Crash
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Officials say it was a 66-year-old man who died as three other people were hurt Wednesday in a crash near North Cherry Street. Investigators say J. Inocente Alvarado Velazquez hit the back of another car and his SUV left the road at University Parkway. Velazquez, two young passengers and the other driver were all transported with injuries. Police say Velazquez was pronounced dead at the hospital. His death is Winston-Salem's seventh traffic fatality this year.
Yadkin County Sheriff's Office Leadership to Change After Tuesday Voting
(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Two Yadkin-county incumbents have been unseated in Tuesday's Republican primary. Candidate Nick Smitherman claimed the victory over incumbent Ricky Oliver in the race for Yadkin County Sheriff. With no Democrats running in November, the primary essentially decided who will continue the leadership of the Sheriff's Office. Newcomer Cliff Collins also claimed a victory over incumbent Gilbert Hemric in the County Commissioners primary.
Former President Trump to Rally in Greensboro in July
(Greensboro, NC) -- Former President Donald J. Trump will host a rally in Greensboro July 15th as part of his American Freedom Tour. Trump, who was last at a public event in Greensboro in 2016 shortly before he was elected, will be joined by other noted republicans. The venue for the tour has yet to be announced. Ticket prices range from nine dollars for an overflow room to nearly four-thousand-dollars or more for seating closer to the stage.
Street Resurfacing Projects Continue in This Weekend
