Hemp, CBD Close To Becoming Illegal In NC
(Raleigh, NC) -- Hemp and CBD products are in danger of becoming illegal in North Carolina. A pilot program that legalized hemp under a sunset provision is slated to expire this Friday. State lawmakers have yet to come to an agreement over two bills that would bring the legislation into line with federal law. Buncombe County state representative John Ager told WLOS-TV he's confident something will be done this week.
Rutherford County Dam Allegedly Threatening Wildlife
(Rutherford County, NC) -- A nearly-century-old dam in Rutherford County is allegedly threatening wildlife. The Department of Environmental Quality is ordering Navitas Utility to come up with a plan to clean up downstream sediment along the Second Broad River within the next month. Navitas owns and sells electricity produced by the dam. Crews are currently operating desilting flood gates to help.
Murder Investigated In Cherokee County
(Cherokee County, NC) -- A suspect is behind bars for a murder in Cherokee County. A man was found dead at a home in Marble last Saturday, but no suspected cause of death has been released. Investigators arrested a suspect for murder, and he's now expected to appear in court this morning. The SBI is helping investigate.
Drug Overdoses Reported At Tryon Equestrian Center
(Tryon, NC) -- Polk County deputies are investigating drug overdoses that happened at the Tryon Equestrian Center. Five people were treated at the hospital after allegedly overdosing during the PBR Tryon Chute Out competition Friday night. WLOS-TV reports one of the cases involved a fentanyl-laced lollipop. The overdoses weren't connected to the event.
Henderson County DA Investigating Toddler Death
(Henderson County, NC) -- Henderson County's district attorney is taking the reins in an investigation over the death of a toddler. A three-year old died after accidentally shooting herself with an unsecured gun in Edneyville last Christmas Day. She was the daughter of retired sheriff's captain Tim Gordon. WLOS-TV reports the district attorney is considering this week whether or not Gordon will face criminal charges.
Splash Pad Opening In Canton
(Haywood County, NC) -- The city of Canton is offering some relief from the heat. A new splash pad is opening this weekend in Sorrells Street Park near downtown. The newly-completed project came at a cost of 125-thousand-dollars. It's expected to be open into September.
City Council Puts Charlotte Social Districts On Hold
(Charlotte, NC) -- City officials are taking more time to study the possibility of social districts in Charlotte. The board was initially expected to review an ordinance yesterday which would allow people to carry alcohol in certain parts of the city. Social districts have already been approved in several North Carolina cities. Charlotte's city manager said concerns have been raised by city council members and some community members about the complexity of implementing the idea.
Monkeypox Case Confirmed In Mecklenburg County
(Mecklenburg County, NC) -- Monkeypox is popping up in the Queen City area. Yesterday, health officials confirmed the first case in Mecklenburg County, but more are already likely to exist locally. The first case in North Carolina was reported just last week. The illness causes flu-like symptoms and is spread through skin-to-skin contact.
One Dead In University City Shooting
(Charlotte, NC) -- A homicide is being investigated in University City. The CMPD says one person died after being shot on Bennettsville Lane near Mallard Creek Road last night. Officers are now looking for a suspect. Two children were among five people hurt in a separate west Charlotte shooting earlier in the day.
Passengers Evacuated From Plane On Charlotte Tarmac
(Charlotte, NC) -- American Airlines is trying to figure out what caused a plane cabin to fill with smoke in Charlotte. Dozens of passengers heading to Orlando were safely evacuated on the tarmac at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport before the flight took off yesterday. The airline said the passengers were bussed back to the terminal to catch another flight. Witnesses told WSOC-TV that the flight crew remained calm and were a great help to those who evacuated.
E-Scooters Coming To Matthews
(Matthews, NC) -- Electric scooters are coming to Matthews. The mayor said Monday that the e-scooter company, Bird, will help support the town's vision for a multi-modal transportation system. Fifty scooters will be available to rent through a mobile app beginning this Friday.

Kuechly Joining Panthers' Broadcast Team

The Charlotte Observer says former linebacker Luke Kuechly is joining Carolina's radio broadcast team for seven-games in the 2022 season. Kuechly was selected to the Pro Bowl in seven of his eight seasons in the NFL, which were all spent with the Panthers. His first game in the booth will come in week one.
Two Raleigh Women Wounded In The Crossfire Of A Gunfight In San Diego
(San Diego, CA) -- Two Raleigh women had to be hospitalized after being wounded in the crossfire of a gunfight in San Diego. It happened Saturday night as Toni Yrias and Lane Sheer were leaving a conference of the National Apartment Association. Police say two groups of individuals got into an argument in the street and shots were fired. One victim was shot in the torso, the other in the hand. According to a GoFundMe page, both women, who work for the Priest Company in Raleigh, will have to undergo extensive rehabilitation. So-far, over 100-thousand dollars has been raised.

Meanwhile, former North Carolina Tar Heels head basketball coach Roy Williams was informed yesterday, that he is one of ten-inductees into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame. Williams coached at the University of Kansas from 1988-through-2003 and led to Jayhawks to four Final Four appearances.
