Housing Approved Near Lake Julian

(Asheville, NC) -- An apartment project appears to be well on its way in south Asheville. A land use incentive grant was approved by the city council last night, which will make way for close to 200 housing units close to Lake Julian. Around 20-percent of those units will be considered affordable housing.

Some Felons Allowed To Register For Voting

(Raleigh, NC) -- Voter registration is open today for some North Carolina felons. The State Board of Elections says any person serving a felon sentence outside of jail or prison can register to vote as of today. The elections website is expected to be adjusted accordingly. Anyone awaiting a trial for a felony is also still eligible to vote.

Graham County Sheriff Loses Runoff

(Graham County, NC) -- Some elections are being decided in western North Carolina. Among those was the sheriff's race in Graham County. Incumbent Jerry Crisp lost in a runoff yesterday to Republican Russell Moody. There were no Democrats in the race, so Moody will serve as Graham's next sheriff.

Asheville Drops Speed Limit On Some Streets

(Asheville, NC) -- The speed limit is dropping on some Asheville streets. The city council approved yesterday to knock the limit from 35 to 15-miles-an-hour on parts of Gay Street. A portion of Beverly Road will also be reduced to 25-miles-an-hour. The changes were made after the public expressed concern over safety.

Asheville Schools Outsourcing Some Jobs

(Asheville, NC) -- Some jobs at Asheville City Schools are being outsourced. The district has approved a contract with the Budd Group for custodial services. A landscaping company will also be handling duties at four schools. There are still open positions for teachers, custodians and bus drivers in Asheville schools.

WNC Boy In Mullet Finals

(Brevard, NC) -- A western North Carolina kid is making waves for his hair. WLOS-TV says five-year-old Ethan Brown has made it into the finals for the USA Mullet Championships. The Transylvania County boy says he would pledge the 25-hundred-dollar top prize to research for diabetes in honor of his sister. The final vote comes up August 15th.

Lyles Wins Mayoral Race Again

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte's mayor is staying in office. Vi Lyles easily won the race for mayor yesterday, with nearly 70-percent of the vote. Republican city councilman Tariq Bokhari edged out Democratic challenger Stephanie Hand by less than two percent to retain the district six seat. Democrats took the four at-large council seats as well.

Oil Spill Larger Than Initially Reported

(Huntersville, NC) -- A fuel spill in Huntersville is larger than expected. The Colonial Pipeline Company gave an updated report on July 22nd which revealed around two-million gallons of fuel spilled in the Oehler Nature Preserve near Huntersville in 2020. That's up more than half-a-million gallons from previous estimates. The company has been ordered to pay five-million-dollars in penalties.

Stolen Cars Up In Charlotte

(Charlotte, NC) -- Car thefts are on a drastic rise in the Queen City. The CMPD said yesterday that 200 vehicles have been stolen in the last two-weeks. Thefts are high especially among Hyundai and Kia models due to a social media trend which encourages and enables the crime without the need of a key.

Suspects From Dangerous Bike Group Arrested

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is cracking down on what's being described as a dangerous group of bicyclists in uptown. An investigation began last week after one suspect was arrested for an assault. Since then, five others have also been arrested for reckless driving. Officers are continuing proactive patrols targeting dangerous bikers.

Suspect Wanted For West Charlotte Murder

(Charlotte, NC) -- A teen is wanted for a murder in west Charlotte. The CMPD is looking for 19-year-old Demetrius Mason in the shooting death of a man on Camp Greene Street earlier this month. It happened during an attempted robbery. An initial suspect has already been arrested.

Woman Arrested After Rowan County Home Set On Fire

(Rowan County, NC) -- A woman is accused of setting fire to a home in Rowan County. Deputies say they believe the suspect was targeting the wrong home when she allegedly started the fire, damaged a pool and stole the homeowner's dog last Friday morning. Damages were estimated to be around 20-thousand-dollars. The woman has since been arrested and granted bond.

Panthers Training Camp Begins Today

(Spartanburg, SC) -- Training camp begins today for the Carolina Panthers. Players started showing up at Wofford College in Spartanburg yesterday to prepare for summer practice. Training camp will last for around two-weeks.

Incumbent Wake County Sheriff Defeated By Challenger Willie Rowe; Mitch Colvin Re-Elected As Mayor Of Fayetteville

(Wake County, NC) -- Although voters turned out in relatively low numbers for Tuesday's runoff, general and primary elections across North Carolina, the biggest upset was in the race for the Democratic nomination for Wake County Sheriff. Incumbent Gerald Baker suffered a devastating defeat yesterday by losing to challenger Willie Rowe 75-percent to 25-percent. Rowe now advances to take on Republican Donnie Harrison in the November general election. Meanwhile, incumbent Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin successfully fought back a challenge from Freddie de la Cruz, winning 62-percent to 36-percent.

Woman Found Dead On The Side Of The Road In Moore County

(Moore County, NC) -- Sheriff's deputies in Moore County are investigating the discovery of the body of a woman lying on the side of the road in the Jackson Springs area. It happened just before 5 p.m. Tuesday along Mill Road. Authorities did not release the victim's identity or the cause of death. Her remains have been turned over to the Moore County Coroner's Office for further examination.

Goldsboro Man Facing First Degree Murder Charges In Death Of A Ft. Bragg Soldier

(Moore County, NC) -- A suspect has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a Ft. Bragg soldier at a party in Moore County over the weekend. The suspect, identified as 25-year old Malik Anthony Williams of Greensboro, was taken into custody Tuesday and charged with one count of first degree murder. Twenty-nine-year old Staff Sergeant Keith Wright Jr., along with four others, including Wright's mother were wounded at the event. Wright was pronounced dead at the scene. Williams is being held at the Moore County Detention Center without bond.

Protesters Demand North Carolina Lawmakers Pass Legislation Authorizing Medicaid Expansion

(Raleigh, NC) -- Dozens of demonstrators gathered in downtown Raleigh yesterday to continue to press state lawmakers in the General Assembly to pass legislation expanding Medicaid. This, as the State Department released a report showing Medicaid expansion would earn the State more than 500-million a month and extend health insurance coverage to an additional 600-thousand North Carolinians. Negotiations to pass a Medicaid expansion bill failed in both Houses before the legislative session adjourned for the summer.

Cooper Urges More Investment In Critical Infrastructure Before Worst Of Hurricane Season Arrives

(Wilmington, NC) -- With the height of Atlantic Hurricane Season fastly approaching, Governor Roy Cooper is on a campaign to encourage local governments to invest more to keep critical infrastructure operating. Speaking to a group in Wilmington Tuesday, Cooper emphasized re-enforcing power grids and making roads and bridges more resilient to severe storms. The 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1st and runs through November 30th.

Duke Doctors Form Racing Team To Raise Money For ALS Research

(Durham, NC) -- A group of Duke University doctors joined together earlier this month to raise over 43-thousand dollars for ALS research at Virginia International Raceway. Neurologists Mark Sheen, Donald Sanders, Matthew Ehrlich, along with pulmonologists David Murdoch formed a combination racing and fundraising team to help find a cure for the condition commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease. Ehrlich, who's been racing as a hobby for several years, used his own number 55 car to participate in the event, which raised a total of 200-thousand dollars towards ALS research.
