The stretch of river between Long Shoals and Croggy Dam was the focus of last night's Improvement and Protection Summit. The new program provides the capabilities for EMS to treat critically sick or injured patients suffering from severe blood loss on the spot. In certain emergency situations, every second counts, and precious time is lost during the transport of patients who need blood transfusions. The program is already making an impact as EMS workers were able to administer blood to a seriously injured patient while on the way to the Trauma Center in Asheville.

The voluntary program allows customers the chance to purchase carbon offsets for as low as three-dollars per month. Campbell Creek Greenway Attacker Still On The Loose

The sexual assault and attempted rape happened along the Campbell Creek Greenway in Southeast Charlotte early Wednesday morning while the victim was walking alone. She was able to fight off her attacker and call for help, but not before he ran away. Now, local police are stepping up foot patrols and other security in the area and other public places around town.

Police Body Cam Footage From Deadly Officer Shooting Released To The Public
(Concord, NC) -- Concord Police are releasing body camera footage from a deadly officer-involved shooting at a local car dealership back in February. Now former police officer Timothy Larson was on patrol when he noticed 29-year-old Brandon Combs attempting to steal a car from the Modern Nissan Dealership. During the confrontation, Combs jumped behind the wheel of Larson's police SUV and refused several commands to stop before Larson shot him. An investigation revealed that Larson did not use excessive force, but he was fired for providing false information on a police report related to the shooting.

Doctors At Duke Health Perform The World's First Partial Heart Transplant On A Human
(Durham, NC) -- History was made at Duke Health when a group of surgeons successfully performed the world's first partial heart transplant on a human. The patient was a 17-day old baby boy, who was born with the two main arteries in his heart fused together. Using an organ from an infant donor, the doctors were able to transplant new arteries into the child's heart that are expected to grow with the Harnett County boy, eliminating the need for further surgeries. The baby is now five months old and reportedly doing fine.
First Case Of The West Nile Virus Confirmed In Cumberland County
(Raleigh, NC) -- State health officials have confirmed the first case of the West Nile Virus in North Carolina this year. HHS announced yesterday, that the infected person is a Cumberland County resident and that the disease was most likely caused by mosquito bites. However, the agency said the virus could also be contracted through blood transfusions, organ transplants and through breastfeeding or pregnancy.
