The storm has been heading through Florida towards the Atlantic, but is projected to make a turn back into the Carolinas. The National Weather Service is calling for heavy rain across western North Carolina tomorrow through Sunday. Governor Roy Cooper has declared a state of emergency for North Carolina.

Three Arrested For Stolen Property In Swannanoa

(Swannanoa, NC) -- Several suspects are facing charges in connection to a stolen property investigation in Buncombe County. The sheriff's office says three people were arrested after a weeks-long probe, which turned up stolen lawn equipment, a truck and guns in Swannanoa. Two people are still wanted in the investigation. Around 20 felony charges have been filed so far.

Tourism Down In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- Tourism numbers are down around Asheville. The development authority says both hotel occupancy and vacation rentals dropped slightly in August from the same time in 2021. Officials say more people are deciding to travel to larger cities or overseas for vacations.

City Council Approves Playground Plan

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville playground is being rebuilt thanks to the help of local residents. The city council voted this week to accept an agreement plan with the school system and Buncombe County to maintain the former Jones Park Playground in north Asheville for the next 20-years. The original site was torn down a year ago over safety issues, but community members have since raised money for a replacement.

Woodfin Studying Short-Term Rentals

The Citizen-Times reports town officials have launched a study on the impact that rentals like Airbnb are having on the housing market. There's also growing concern that investor groups will buy up homes before families have a chance to potentially purchase properties. There were more than 250 short-term rentals in Woodfin as of last month.

Two Found Dead In Fort Mill

(Fort Mill, SC) -- A deadly double shooting is being investigated in Fort Mill. WSOC-TV reports a man and woman were found shot to death at a home on Saddle Ridge Road late Tuesday night. The victims were reportedly a woman and her son. Sheriff's investigators aren't looking for any suspects.

Teen Killed While Crossing Highway

(Lancaster County, SC) -- The death of a teen is being investigated in Lancaster County. Officers say a 14-year-old girl was struck and killed by a tractor trailer while crossing Highway Nine yesterday afternoon. She was a student at Buford High School. The driver of the truck stopped at the scene and was uninjured.

Panthers Hosting Cardinals On Sunday

Woman Hospitalized With Serious Injuries After Being Shot Near NC State Campus

(Raleigh, NC) -- A woman has been hospitalized with serious injuries after being shot at an apartment complex near the campus of NC State University last night. Neighbors told police they heard about four shots fired around 9:15 p.m. Officers arrived at Oberlin Village to find the victim suffering from two gunshot wounds. One person has been taken into custody for questioning in connection with the shooting.

Mother And Male Companion In Custody After 5-Year Old Boy Shot In Roanoke Rapids

(Roanoke Rapids, NC) -- A man and woman were arrested Wednesday, after a five-year old boy was shot and wounded in Roanoke Rapids. It happened just after 3 p.m. in the parking lot of a T-Mobile store on Premiere Boulevard. It's unclear if the shooting was accidental, but police say the couple drove the child by private vehicle to UNC North Hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the arm. He was last reported to be in stable condition.

Nash County Elementary Student Caught With Loaded Gun At School

(Nash County, NC) -- Authorities in Nash County are investigating to determine if any disciplinary action will be taken against an elementary school student, who was found with a loaded gun on Wednesday. The incident occurred at Middlesex Elementary on West Haynes Avenue. Sheriff's deputies arrived and retrieved the weapon after it was taken from the student by staff. The case has been turned over to the custody of Juvenile Services.

Elderly Driver Charged One Month After Crashing Vehicle Into A Hardees, Killing Two People

(Wilson County, NC) -- Charges have been filed against an elderly Wilson County man who is accused of crashing his SUV into a Hardees restaurant last month, killing two brothers. Seventy-five-year old Jesse Lee Lawrence is now faced with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and reckless driving. He was booked into the Wilson County Jail on Tuesday and later released after posting a 20-thousand dollar unsecured bond.

State Of North Carolina Receives Federal Funds To Begin Building Electric Vehicle Charging Station Network

(Raleigh, NC) -- The state of North Carolina has been approved to receive 109-million dollars to establish an Electric Vehicle charging network. That, from the U.S. Department of Transportation, which announced yesterday that the funds would come from the recently signed five-billion dollar Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The exact locations of the charging stations have yet to be determined. Work is expected to begin in late 2023 or early 2024.

Some Football Game Schedules Have Changed Because Of Hurricane Ian

(Raleigh, NC) -- The impact from the remnants of Hurricane Ian is already affecting the scheduling of some weekend football games in North Carolina. East Carolina's game against the University of South Florida in Tampa has been relocated to Boca Raton. And Fayetteville State has moved its scheduled Saturday game against Chowan University to tonight at the Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium. At last report, the NC State game against Clemson was still on; so is the UNC game against Virginia Tech in Chapel Hill. Finally, officials at Florida State say they remain optimistic that they will be able to safely host Wake Forest Saturday in Tallahassee.
