Some In Western Asheville Still Without Water

(Asheville, NC) -- Water still isn't back to full service for some residents in west Asheville. The city confirmed yesterday that water has been restored and boil advisories have been lifted in the south, but things are not back to normal in higher elevations. The Candler Knob and Spivey Mountain areas are the most heavily impacted. There's no time frame on water restoration.

Wife Arrested After Man Killed In Maggie Valley

(Maggie Valley, NC) -- A homicide investigation is underway in Maggie Valley. Officers say a man was killed at the Tanglewood Motel on Soco Road Saturday night. His wife was arrested and charged with murder. Cause of death hasn't been released.

Hospitals Feeling Pinch From Tripledemic

(Haywood County, NC) -- Some mountain hospitals are being stretched thin due to impacts from what's being called the tripledemic. COVID, flu and RSV cases are high this fall and winter so far and impacts are being felt with medical care. Haywood County's medical director told WLOS-TV that many hospitals in western North Carolina are having to divert patients due to capacity constraints. An increase in cases was somewhat expected because of the holidays.

Haywood County Adding Bus Route During Construction

(Haywood County, NC) -- Haywood County school leaders are working around some construction to get kids to school. Construction to replace two bridges on I-40 is taking a little longer than expected. When class resumes after winter break, the district will be running a smaller temporary bus route to pick up students west of the construction area.

Man Injured After Gunfire Erupts In Asheville

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville police are looking for details from a barrage a gunfire that erupted Sunday. One man was shot in the cheek, while several cars and apartments were hit along Atkinson Street. Officers recovered close to 20 shell casings from the scene. There have been no arrests.

Strong Storms Possible Tonight

(Asheville, NC) -- Strong storms could be moving into western North Carolina today. Rain and severe thunderstorms are likely overnight before things turn cool again on the back half of the week. The Asheville area could see flurries Thursday night, but it's not expected to be anything serious.

Harnett County Sheriff's Deputies Fatally Shoot Man Who Pointed At Gun At Them

(Harnett County, NC) -- The State Bureau of Investigation is examining the details surrounding a fatal officer-involved shooting in Harnett County yesterday. It happened around 8:30 am at a home on Capitol Hill Road in Lillington. Authorities say sheriff's deputies went to the home to serve an involuntary commitment order on a person who was reported to be having a "mental episode". When officers tried to take the man into custody, he allegedly pointed a gun in their direction, prompting them to open fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Durham Police Still Looking For Dark Colored Honda Sedan Mass Drive-by Shooting

(Durham, NC) -- Durham police are continuing to search for a dark colored late model Honda sedan, wanted in connection with the mass drive-by shooting of five people outside a strip mall on New Year's Day. Two of the victims, including a juvenile, remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries. A preliminary forensics report found multiple shell casings in the front and rear of the Village Shopping Plaza on North Miami Boulevard. At least 11-bullet hold were fired into the Subway restaurant. Anyone with information is asked to contact Durham police.

Three Charlotte Construction Workers Killed After Building Scaffolding Collapses

(Charlotte, NC) -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has been called in to investigate an accident at a construction site in Charlotte, in which three workers were killed. It happened around nine a.m. Monday on East Morehead Street near the Uptown District. Investigators say the construction crew was working on a building when the scaffolding collapsed, causing three men to fall 70-feet to the ground below. All were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other workers received non-life-threatening injuries.

North Carolina Heating Assistance Program Now Accepting Applications

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina households needing help in paying their winter heating bills can now take advantage of a new government sponsored program. Applications for the State Low Income Energy Assistance Program are being accepted through March 31st. The federally funded program provides families with one-time payment that will go directly to their utility company. Hurricanes Will Try To Make It 12-Tonight In Game Against The Rangers

(New York, NY) -- The Carolina Hurricanes will be in the Big Apple tonight to try for their 12th straight win, as they take on the New York Rangers. A victory over the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, will also mark the 200th win for head coach Rod Brind'Amour. The Canes come into tonight's contest fresh off a shootout 5-4 win over the New Jersey Devils on Sunday. The team is 15-0-2 in their last 17 games and haven't lost since December 6th, when they fell 4-3 to Anaheim.

Community Mourns Shooting Death of Generous Woman

(Greensboro, NC) -- Greensboro officials are investigating the shooting death of a woman who was beloved in her community for her giving spirit. Police aren't sure of the circumstances of how Natasha Walker was shot and killed near Parkway Street and Cridland Road early Sunday morning. The 32-year-old mother was known in Greensboro through her business, Natasha's Credit Services. Friends and colleagues say her goal was to help close the wealth gap and create generational wealth for more people. She also co-founded the Margaret Clinard Outreach Foundation, a nonprofit organization that focuses on indigent women and children in the Triad area.

Slight Risk for Severe Weather in Piedmont Triad

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Forecasters say there's a chance for severe storms to move into the area Wednesday ahead of a cold front. Officials with the National Weather Service say the main thing they're concerned about is strong, gusting winds that could produce some damage. The storms are expected to move in overnight Tuesday through Wednesday morning.

New Tax Rates Now in Effect

(Raleigh, NC) -- You're now subject to a lower state income tax rate in North Carolina. The decrease in the flat individual income tax -- from four-point-99 percent to four-point-75 percent -- has taken effect statewide in the new year. However, the state interest rate for refunds and tax assessments increased from five to seven percent. Also, the tax rate for motor and alternative fuels increased just over two cents to 40 point five cents per gallon.

State Parole Commission to Parole Leroy Wentzel

(Greensboro, NC) -- A Guilford County man who has been serving a life sentence in a murder-for-hire case is now eligible to be released from state prison. Last week, the state parole commission announced it would release Leroy Wentzel, who is serving a life term plus 30 years. He was convicted of luring his brother-in-law to a remote area and killing him in April of 1991. He reportedly helped his sister-in-law kill her husband so she could collect some 500-thousand-dollars in insurance benefits.

Duke Women Debut At No. 19 in College Poll

(Durham, NC) -- The women's Blue Devils basketball team is ranked number 19 in the latest college poll. The ranking Monday comes after an eight-game winning streak that dates back to the end of November. It includes a win last week at number ten N-C State and one at home against Louisville. The jump to 19 marks the Blue Devils' first appearance in the rankings since the last year's season, when they peaked at number 15.
