(Buncombe County, NC) -- A Buncombe County couple wants to know who killed a horse on their farm. A 14-year-old horse known as Sweet Tea was found shot last weekend at the Mack family farm. It's on 52-acres off Old State Highway 20 near Alexander. A five-thousand-dollar reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Reading Improving For NC Elementary School Students

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina's elementary school students are showing strides in reading. A report released yesterday shows more K-through-three kids were on track at the beginning of this school year when compared to last. Thousands are at or above assessment levels. The state superintendent says it's a sign things are rebounding after the pandemic.

Industrial Site Plans Moving Forward Surrounding Enka Clock Tower

(Asheville, NC) -- Plans are moving forward for an industrial space at the former site of American Enka Company in Asheville. The city's planning and zoning commission gave approval yesterday to a proposal that features three buildings on 45-acres just off Smokey Park Highway. Developers are being told that the historic Enka clock tower must remain on the site. The proposal goes before the city council later this month.

Haywood School Needs New Logo

(Haywood County, NC) -- A Haywood County school needs a new logo, and there's money involved. Tuscola High School must come up with a new design after its logo was found to be too close to the one for Appalachian State University. The Telco Community Credit Union and Haywood County Schools Foundation are partnering to award the winner with 500-dollars. Submissions are being taken until February 1st.

Habitual Felon Arrested On Drug Charges

(Asheville, NC) -- A man wanted on drug charges in Asheville is now facing even more. WLOS-TV reports the suspect was arrested while Asheville police were conducting investigations in the Smokey Park Highway area Tuesday. He was already wanted for several drug charges and for being a habitual felon. Additional charges now include possession of opium or heroin.

Million-Dollar Lottery Ticket Bought In Waynesville

(Haywood County, NC) -- Someone in western North Carolina could have a million-dollar lottery ticket. A Powerball ticket bought at the I [[ eye ]] Market just off U.S. 23 in Waynesville won one-million-dollars in Wednesday night's drawing. The ticket matched all five white balls. The jackpot is expected to be 325-million-dollars in the next Powerball drawing tomorrow night.

Charlotte City Councilman Cleared Of Charges By D-A

(Charlotte, NC) -- Mecklenburg County's district attorney is clearing a Charlotte city councilman of potential charges. An investigation started after it was found James Mitchell may have too much ownership stake in a construction company that has contracts with the city. D-A Spencer Merriweather revealed yesterday that there's no evidence Mitchell has any ownership in the company at this time.

Missing Man Found Dead In Truck

(Gastonia, NC) -- Gastonia police are investigating the death of a missing man. Officers say it appears the man lost control of his truck, which rolled off down into a creek next to Lower Bethesda Road. He was found in the driver's seat around 100-yards downstream on Thursday afternoon. The man's family reported him missing him the day before.

Suspect Arrested For Theft After Suitcase With Ashes Stolen

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is accused of stealing luggage containing ashes from the Charlotte airport. The CMPD says the suitcase was stolen last month, but hasn't been returned to the owner yet. Officers did arrest a suspect later in December.

(Cabarrus County, NC) -- A branch of the Cabarrus County library system is re-opening soon after suffering flood damage. Enough work will be done to open doors next Wednesday, which is several weeks earlier than what library leaders initially thought. A pipe burst when cold air moved through over Christmas weekend.

(Charlotte, NC) -- A suspect is behind bars for charges in a north Charlotte homicide. A man died after being shot in the parking lot of Wayne's Supermarket at North Graham and West 24th streets Wednesday. The suspect was arrested yesterday for charges including murder.

Ruptured Water Line Results In Outages For Several Residents And Businesses In Spring Hope

(Spring Hope, NC) -- For the second time in one week, several residents and businesses in the small Nash County town of Spring Hope are having to go without water service. The latest occurred yesterday, when crews from Duke Energy accidentally struck a water main, causing the outages. The first wide-spread water outage happened during Christmas weekend. As of late Thursday night, service had been partially restored to most customers, but the mayor says it will take millions of dollars to repair the infrastructure.

Water Main Break Repaired But Heavily Traveled Roads Near I-440 Will Remain Closed To Traffic Through The Weekend

(Raleigh, NC) -- In Raleigh, a large water main break near Western Boulevard and I-440 was finally repaired yesterday and service was restored to customers. But the heavily traveled Blue Ridge and Chaney Roads will have to remain closed through Monday morning. City transportation officials say flooding caused by the water main break caused damage to the asphalt and concrete, which crews will be working to repair through the weekend.

Five Suspected Biker Gang Members Set To Be Charged In Shooting Death Of Raleigh Motorcyclist On New Years Day

(Raleigh, NC) -- Police in Raleigh have taken five men into custody in connection with the shooting death of a motorcyclist on New Years Day. Investigators believe the fatal incident stemmed from an altercation between rival motorcycle gangs over a stolen jacket. The victim, identified as 37-year old Jonas Padilla, died at the hospital after crashing his bike on Bayberry Lane. The five members of the Red Devils biker gang are scheduled to make their first court appearance today.

Plane Forced To Make Emergency Landing Shortly After Taking Off From Charlotte Airport

(Charlotte, NC) -- A plane that took off from the Charlotte airport on Wednesday, had to make an emergency landing. Authorities report the American Airlines flight, which departed around 1 p.m., landed a few minutes later at the Albert J. Ellis Airport in Onslow County, after the pilot smelled smoke coming from the cockpit. All 50-passengers onboard the aircraft exited without injury.

Nearly 70 Percent of North Carolina Counties now in CDC's COVID Orange Zone

(Raleigh, NC) -- More than two-thirds of North Carolina's counties have now increased to the highest community level for cases of COVID 19. A federal map from the Centers for Disease Control shows a total of 68 counties in the orange zone in their map updated Thursday night. A county moves into the orange, high-level zone if it has more than 200 new cases per week or if ten percent or more of the people in its hospitals have COVID-19.

Money Approved for Schools Repairs, Building in Guilford County

(Greensboro, NC) -- Guilford County commissioners have approved additional funding to renovate and rebuild several schools. Officials say the vote Thursday night will free up money to rebuild three schools and demolish and rebuild nearly 20 others. The plans are related to the almost two-billion-dollar school bond referendum that county voters approved last year. However, officials say more funding had to be requested for the projects because of rising construction costs and design changes.

New Publix Store To Anchor Shopping Center on Robinhood Road

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Developers say the exterior of a new Publix grocery story is almost finished done in a new shopping center in western Forsyth County. The store will anchor a development at the corner of Robinhood Road and Meadowlark Drive that will eventually include nearby housing. Twelve other retail stores are also planned for the site. It will be Publix's third store in Forsyth County.

Traffic Stop Leads to Multiple-Count of Cocaine Charges

(Yadkinville, NC) -- A Jonesville man is facing several felony counts involving cocaine after he was stopped while driving in Yadkin County. Deputies say they got a warrant and searched Arnulfo Torres Aguilera's home after they allegedly found cocaine on him during a traffic stop Thursday morning. Detectives arrested him after more than nine ounces of cocaine, cash and drug paraphernalia were reportedly found at his home. Aguilera remains free on a bail bond.

WSSU Men's Basketball Falls to Virginia State

(Winston-Salem, NC) - The men of Winston-Salem State University have received their first basketball loss of the season to an unranked team. The Rams lost to Virginia State 66-52 on their opponents' campus in Petersburg. Winston State has only had two other losses - to number one-ranked Indiana University in Pennsylvania and 19th-ranked Virginia Union. The defeat Thursday night puts the Rams at 10 and 3 for the season and 2-2 in league play.
