(Buncombe County, NC) -- A Buncombe County deputy who was shot at the magistrate's office is expected to be okay. The sheriff's office says a fight broke out while trying to secure protective order warrants early Sunday morning inside the lobby of the jail, which is where the magistrate's office is located. The suspect in the case allegedly shot and injured the deputy in the lobby. That deputy fired back and hit the man, who was still being held in the hospital last night.

Search For Missing Man Suspended In GSMNP

(Swain County, NC) -- The active search for a missing man in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is suspended. Crews spend eleven-days looking for Gordon Kaye, who was last seen in the Deep Creek area in late April. Dozens of agencies initially joined in looking for the Florida man through steep terrain and dense vegetation. Anyone that was in the Deep Creek area is still encouraged to contact the National Park Service if they visited between April 19th and 23rd.

Asheville Airport Using Temporary Structures For Gates

(Asheville, NC) -- Passengers will see some changes at Asheville Regional Airport this morning. Crews are installing a temporary structure this week that accommodates several arrival and departure gates in the midst of another major project. It may be in use for a couple of years. A new annex is being built that will roughly double the airport's size.

Walmart Evacuated After Smoke Scare

(Weaverville, NC) -- No major problems are being reported from the site of a store evacuation in western North Carolina. Customers at a Walmart in Weaverville were told to leave the business when smoke appeared from the roof yesterday. A fire official told WLOS-TV that there was no actual fire, but the smoke came from an air-conditioning unit. Customers were allowed back in after around 15-minutes.

Madison County Using Money To Improve Ball Field

(Madison County, NC) -- Madison County is planning to invest in making improvements to local youth baseball fields. The Citizen-Times reports the county's board of commissioners approved to develop a 120-thousand-dollar improvement plan during a meeting in late April. The request for help came from the Madison County Youth Baseball League, which operates six fields throughout Mars Hill and Marshall. Around 25-thousand-extra-dollars have been raised separately.

Over 350K To Be Used For Children With Families In Need

Asheville's city council has recently recommended splitting the funds to half-a-dozen nonprofit organizations. Police In Fayetteville Looking For Driver Who Struck And Killed A Pedestrian On Sunday

(Fayetteville, NC) -- Police in Fayetteville are asking the public for help in locating the driver of a dark colored SUV or truck, who is wanted in a fatal hit-and-run Sunday. The incident was first reported around 8:15 am near Bunce Road and Dusty Edge Trial. First responders arrived to find 61-year old Elijah Alphonso Hair lying in a field unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Anyone with information is asked to contact Fayetteville Police or Crime Stoppers.

North Carolina Driver Learners Permit Rules To Change Starting Today

(Raleigh, NC) -- Starting today in North Carolina, the mandatory period for teen age drivers to have a learners permit during supervised driving, will be reduced from 12-to-6 months. The new law takes effect, after Governor Roy Cooper announced on Friday, that he would allow Senate Bill 157 to become law without his signature. Under the terms of the new legislation, the six-month drivers permit requirement will last through the end of 2023. In 2024, the minimum will revert back to the pre-pandemic period of nine months.

Man Shot While Driving Down The Road In Harnett County Sunday

(Harnett County, NC) -- A man remains hospitalized in critical condition today, after he was shot and wounded while driving down the road. It happened just before 5 a.m. Sunday on Sandefer Road in the Bunnlevel community. Investigators closed off the area to traffic for several hours in order to gather forensic evidence. The driver was identified as 23-year old Daniel Andre Williams. So-far, no arrests have been made and no motive has been established for the shooting.

AT&T Internet Outage In Durham And Chapel Hill Could Last For Several More Days

(Durham, NC) -- AT&T customers in Durham and Chapel Hill could be without internet service for several more days. The service provider blames the outage on a problem with fiber optic lines that was first reported last Wednesday. The company initially estimated service would be restored in about 24 hours. But now AT&T says it could take between 3-and-7 business days before internet service is back on line.

Marines From Camp Lejeune Headed To Southwest Border This Week

(Camp Lejeune, NC) -- Hundreds of military personnel from North Carolina are being deployed to the southwestern border this week, as the U.S. prepares for an influx of immigrants when Title 42 expires on Thursday. The Pentagon announced on Friday, that 15-hundred Marines from Camp Lejeune have been dispatched to assist U.S. Customs and Border Patrol with a number of duties, including data entry, warehouse support, along with additional detection and monitoring. They will not be permitted to support migrant processing and escort duties.

New Jersey Devils Downed The Canes 8-4 Sunday On Home Ice

(Newark, NJ) -- The Carolina Hurricanes lost big to the New Jersey Devils yesterday, with an 8-4 defeat in Game 3 of the second round Stanley Cup Playoff Series in Newark. The young and talented Devils proved they have what it takes to possibly extend the series to seven by jumping out early with a 3-0 lead in the first period. Led by Jack Hughes who had two goals and two assists, New Jersey also got scores from seven other players, as goalie Frederick Andersen had to be replaced by Pyotr Kochetkov, who eventually ended up with 18 saves. Coach Rod Brind'Amour summed up the game by simply saying "We were not good." The Canes lead the series 2-1. Game 4 will be back at the Prudential Center tomorrow night.

Man Shot At KFC Expected to Be Okay

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- A Salisbury man is expected to recover after he was shot and injured at a KFC restaurant. Winston-Salem police said they responded to a call at the location on Liberty Street Saturday night but didn't find any evidence of a shooting. It wasn't until Dewan Kenneth Brent showed up at a local hospital for treatment that they learned details. The 38-year-old was treated for a gunshot wound to the thigh. Police haven't released any more about information about the shooting but say they're continuing their investigation.

Northern Guilford High School Students Could Get Paid for NIL This Summer

(Greensboro, NC) -- Students in Greensboro high schools could start getting paid for use of their names, images and likenesses as soon as this summer. The state's high school Athletic Association has voted to make North Carolina the 28th state to add an N-I-L policy. The change is expected to take effect July 1st but there's still some uncertainty. The state senate wants the board of education to make N-I-L rules, not the athletic association, and lawmakers have filed a bill to change that.

Wake Forest Ranked Best Part-Time MBA Program In NC

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Wake Forest's business school has beat out nine other North Carolina business schools for having the best part-time MBA ranking. The newly-released graduate program rankings by U.S. News & World Report show Wake Forest took the Number 28 spot nationwide. Elsewhere in the Triad, UNC-Greensboro was ranked 109th and Elon University came in at 180 for their part-time MBA programs. Wake also ranked high in several other programs, including 16th place nationally for its physician assistant classes.

Wake Beats Boston College for Series Win

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Wake Forest has picked up a series win over 17th-ranked Boston College. The number-two Demon Deacons won two-of-three over the Eagles to improve to 39-and-7 overall and 18-and-5 in ACC play. The 4-2 defeat came Sunday afternoon with help from Nick Kurtz, who smacked his third home run of the series and 17th of the season so far. The Deacs are believed to be the only team in program history to win its first eight conference series to open a season.
