Body Cam Footage Released in Whitmire Arrest

Body camera footage from the Devon Whitmire arrest was released on Thursday after a judge granted requests from the Asheville Police Department to have the videos made public.

A detailed video shows Whitmire almost immediately becoming combative with APD officers once it was discovered that he was lying about who he was. Whitmire tried to play off that he was actually his twin brother.

911 calls also included in the video release from Deon Whitmire's own mother tell a tale of terror and violence over the course of several days.

Whitmire was taken into custody, unharmed and was taken to the Buncombe County Detention facility for booking.

Video footage from a second officers body camera was also released.

Two different reviews of the arrest, one internal done by APD and the other by District Attorney Todd Williams, both clear all of the officers of any wrongdoing.

District Attorney Todd Williams appeared on First News on 570 the morning of the release praising APD Officers for showing restraint in a volatile situation.

Whitmire was given an 85-thousand dollar bond by a magistrate that was later kept in place by Judge Edwin Clontz.

The Judge, in what was considered an unprecedented move during a simple bond hearing, derrided APD officers claiming they were just as guilty as Whitmire in the altercation.
