Suspect Dead In Asheville Officer-Involved Shooting
(Asheville, NC) -- The SBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Asheville. Trooper Jeffrey Dunlap was saved by a ballistic vest when he was shot in the chest on the side of I-26 near the Brevard Road exit Monday night. He had pulled over to help a stranded motorist, who ended up being the suspected gunman. Dunlap returned fire, killing the 57-year-old driver from Leicester.
Hendersonville Man Shows Patriotism With His Plane
(Hendersonville, NC) -- A Hendersonville man is showing his patriotism with artwork featured on a plane he built himself. Steve Jarrell told the Hendersonville Times-News that he wanted to use the aircraft as a tribute to all of those who made freedom possible. His plane features bald eagles, American flags, the famous scene of U.S. soldiers at Iwo Jima, and Washington crossing the Delaware. The aircraft will be housed at the Hendersonville Airport.
Rotted Tree Falls On Asheville Woman During Canoe Trip
(Mitchell County, NC) -- State wildlife officials are revealing more about a tragic accident on a western North Carolina river. Yumiko Virant was killed Sunday when a tree fell on her canoe while she rode along the North Toe River in Mitchell County. The Asheville woman's husband and 12-year-old son were also injured. The three that fell was reportedly rotted out in the center, but it wasn't apparent from the outside.
Boone Police Respond To Four Overdoses
(Boone, NC) -- Boone police want to remind the public about the dangers of drug use. A warning from the department comes after emergency officials responded to four overdoses last Saturday, one of which almost killed someone. Boone's police chief told the Watauga Democrat that they want to save lives by encouraging users to get help and bring dealers to justice. Fentanyl was the suspected drug used in the overdoses.
Gas Prices Fall Over Past Month In North Carolina
(Asheville, NC) -- North Carolina gas prices are a good bit lower than this time last month. Triple-A reports the average cost for a gallon of regular unleaded stands at around three-21, which is a 14-cent drop over early June. The cheapest prices in western North Carolina are in Clay County, where a gallon is averaging just under three-ten.
WNC Teen Making Strides In Bull Riding
(Haywood County, NC) -- A Haywood County teen is bringing home hardware for his rodeo talents. WLOS-TV reports 13-year-old Tate Watson came out on top in the Reserve World Champion Bull Rider in the Junior High competition last week. He's now considered to be a top four qualifier in North Carolina's bull riding competitions.
Over 350 Rip Tide Rescues On North Carolina Beaches This Weekend
(Coastal Carolina, NC) -- As thousands of vacationers crowded the North Carolina coastline for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, an unusually high number of beachgoers had to be rescued from rip currents. EMS officials report life guards made an average of 100-rip current rescues a day, for an estimated 350 between Friday and Tuesday. On Sunday, a Sanford man drowned while trying to rescue a group of children from rip currents in the waters off Fort Fisher.

Pedestrian Attempting To Cross I-95 Struck And Killed By Truck In Johnston County
(Johnston Co., NC) -- Authorities in Johnston County are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer yesterday. It happened around 1 a.m. along I-95. Records show the victim had earlier wrecked his Ford Mustang on a service road, when he was attempting to walk across the interstate. That's when he was hit by an 18-wheeler en route to Wilson. The adult male was pronounced dead at the scene. So far, no charges have been filed against the driver of the truck.
Man Found Shot To Death Behind Apartment Complex In Raleigh
(Raleigh, NC) -- A shooting investigation that began late Saturday night in Raleigh, has ended with the discovery of a body in a wooded area. Around 9:45 pm, officers responded to a call of shots fired into an apartment building along the 45-hundred block of Picket Fence Lane. They arrived to find several bullet holes in the structure, but no injuries. On Monday, police returned to the area and found 28-year old Dexter Rashad Ingram already dead in a wooded area behind the townhomes. Investigators have classified the death as a homicide. So far, no arrests have been made.
Cooper Names Darren Jackson Chair Of State Parole Commission
(Raleigh, NC) -- Governor Roy Cooper has announced the appointment a former North Carolina lawmaker and prison sentencing commission member as the new Chair of the North Carolina Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. The promotion of Darren Jackson to the post follows the retirement of Bill Fowler, who had served as Chair since 2005. Jackson, who served in the North Carolina House for 12 years, had just been appointed to the Parole Commission back in May.
Bulls Come From Behind In The Bottom Of The Ninth To Beat The Tides 6-5
(Durham, NC) -- In classic Fourth of July fashion, the Durham Bulls staged a dramatic come-from-behind victory over the Norfolk Tides last night. At the DBAP the Bulls were down 5-1 at the bottom of the 9th when the fireworks began. First it was Tristan Gray who got a two-run single to narrow the margin to 5-3. Then it was Osleivis Basabe, who smacked a bases-loaded double to bring home the final three runs to seal the win 6-5. The two teams reconvene tonight at 6:30.
