Firm Chosen To Design Improvements At Asheville Ballfield

(Asheville, NC) -- A firm is set to make major improvements at Asheville's McCormick Field. The city council approved a three-point-seven-million-dollar contract to pay Philadelphia-based Ewing Cole last night. The company will draw up plans to renovate the home of the Asheville Tourists next year, with the project set to be complete in 2026. The city also tasked Ewing Cole with performing a needs assessment for the park in 2016.

Air Quality Alert issued For WNC

(Asheville, NC) -- Air quality is an issue for western North Carolina again. The National Weather Service says there's a code orange alert for more than a dozen counties in the region today. Ground-level ozone concentrations are above an unhealthy level. High temperatures are also climbing into the 90s through the weekend.

Crime Numbers Fall In Hendersonville

(Hendersonville, NC) -- Crime numbers are down in Hendersonville. The police chief has reported to the Hendersonville News-Times that arrests for overall crimes, larcenies and drugs have dropped at least 50-percent in the last year. Technologies are being credited with helping improve numbers. The police force is still more than a dozen under full staff.

Improvements Coming For Hendersonville VFW

(Hendersonville, NC) -- The Veterans of Foreign Wars location in Hendersonville is undergoing big improvements. City and county leaders were on hand yesterday to celebrate the renovations that were made possible by more than four-million-dollars through the American Rescue Plan Act. The current facility was reportedly built more than 70 years ago.

Transylvania County Man Sentenced For Child Sex Crimes

(Transylvania County, NC) -- A Transylvania County man is heading to prison for child sex crimes. Johnathan McKinney was sentenced to at least 50-years after a jury convicted him of sexual assault and statutory rape of a minor this week. The Hendersonville News-Times reports McKinney's wife stated her husband was an innocent man after the verdict.

Recipes Taken Soon For Apple Festival

(Hendersonville, NC) -- Recipes in a western North Carolina apple contest are being taken later this summer. The 77th North Carolina Apple Festival will be held in Hendersonville in September. Finished products are due at the front of the county courthouse on September 1st.

Charlotte Homeless Numbers Rank Low For Large Cities

(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte's homeless population is smaller than most large cities. The real estate service Home Bay currently ranks the Queen City at number-42 out of the country's largest 50 cities for the rate of homeless people. Last year's number came in at just over 31-hundred. That's one-thousand more than the population reported in 2020.

Fentanyl Found In Statue During Gaston County Traffic Stop

(Gaston County, NC) -- A large fentanyl bust is being reported in Gaston County. Investigators seized ten-thousand fentanyl pills hidden inside a Virgin Mary statue during a traffic stop on Hudson Boulevard Monday. The suspects traveled to the area from Dallas, Texas. A Gaston County officer told WSOC-TV that they've seized over 150-pounds of fentanyl this year, which is well over totals of 2022 already.

Charlotte Pool Closes After Suspected Drowning

(Charlotte, NC) -- A possible drowning is leading a northwest Charlotte community to shut down its pool for the time being. A six-year-old child was found unresponsive at the pool for the Riverbend Swim Club Monday night. WBTV reports that signs outside the pool show that no lifeguard was on duty. The community will later decide on hourly operations.

One Injured In Shooting Outside High School

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a shooting outside a Charlotte school. Officers say an adult was shot during a fight at Julius Chambers High School on Tuesday. Injuries weren't thought to be life-threatening. There were reportedly no students present at the time of the shooting, while police are expected to charge the suspect.

Two Charlotte Homes Featured In HGTV Competition

(Charlotte, NC) -- Two Charlotte homes are finalists in a TV network's competition. HGTV is ranking homes nationwide in eight categories for its Ultimate House Hunt showcase in 2023. A curb appeal finalist includes a home in the Eastover neighborhood, while a Sedgefield home is among those being considered for amazing kitchens. Online voting will be held through August 3rd.

Panthers Being Training Camp Today

Multiple Shootings Across Durham Tuesday Leaves Five People Wounded

(Durham, NC) -- Gun violence across the Triangle area continues to increase. Police in Durham are investigating five shootings that occurred within less than an eight-hour period Tuesday, at four separate locations. Authorities say two of the shootings were drive-by's and two others were in public parks. Two of the wounded victims were last reported to be in serious condition. It's not known if any of the shootings were connected. So far, no suspects have been arrested.

Three Marines Found Dead Inside A Car In Hampstead Over The Weekend

(Hampstead, NC) -- The bodies of three marines stationed at Camp Lejeune were found inside a car over the weekend. The military base released a statement Tuesday, saying the discovery was made Sunday morning outside a Speedway gas station in the Pender County town of Hampstead. The servicemembers were identified as 19-year old Lance Corporal Tanner Kaltenberg, 23-year old Lance Corporal Merax Dockery and 23-year old Lance Corporal Ivan Garcia. The cause of their deaths was not released.

Edgecombe County Woman Injured During Last Week's EF-3 Tornado

(Edgecombe County, NC) -- One of two people who were injured during a tornado touchdown in Edgecombe County last week has been released from the hospital. Family members confirmed that Dale Carter was set to be discharged on Tuesday. However, her husband Ricky Carter, who has cancer, remains hospitalized with injuries. The couple was thrown about 100-feet when their mobile home was hit by a powerful EF-3 tornado last Wednesday.

Hundreds Gather To Pray For Missing Southern Pines Woman

(Southern Pines, NC) -- More than 200-people gathered for a candlelight vigil in Southern Pines last night, to pray for the safe return of Allisha Watts, who has been missing for 10-days. Police records show the 39-year old business owner was last seen in Charlotte on July 16th. Two days later, authorities found a man unresponsive inside her Mercedes Benz in Anson County, but still no sign of Watts. A group plans to charter a bus today, to hold a rally outside the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police headquarters building.

Wake County Health Department Opens Cooling Stations

(Wake County, NC) -- In anticipation of triple-digit temperatures over the next few days, the Wake County Department of Health has announced the opening of six temporary cooling stations. The cooling stations will be located at health department clinics and centers across the county, starting today and running through Sunday. In addition, all Wake County public libraries will also be open to serve as cooling stations.

Durham Bulls Win First Of Six-Game Series Against Charlotte 9-7

(Durham, NC) -- The Durham Bulls began a six-game series against the Charlotte Knights last night at the DBAP, with a 9-7 win. The two teams traded blows for most of the game until Charlotte scored three runs in the top of the fifth and two more in the top of the seventh to take the lead. But then with the bases loaded, 22-year-old Osleivis Basabe belted a triple in the bottom of the eighth to put Durham on top for good. Game Two begins tonight at 6:35 pm.

Parents Charged In Own Child's Death In Seagrove

(Seagrove, NC) -- Two parents are facing felony child abuse charges following the death of their child in Seagrove. The Randolph County Sheriff's Office says they were called out Monday for a welfare check at a home on Needhams Trail. Deputies found a five-year-old dead at the scene. Investigators discovered evidence that led the to the arrest of girl's parents, Christina and Billy Myers. Both are being held on 250-thousand-dollars bond.

Homeowner Shoots And Kills Suspected Intruder In Winston-Salem

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- No charges will be filed against a homeowner who shot and killed a man accused of trying to break into his storage building in Winston-Salem. Police say the incident happened early yesterday in the 46-hundred block of White Rock Road, where police found Christopher Jay Peche suffering from a gunshot wound. He died despite life saving efforts. Investigators believe the homeowner shot Peche after he saw him trying to break into his storage building on his property.

Bond Denied For Man Charged In June Winston-Salem Shooting

(Winston-Salem, NC) -- Bond is denied for a man charged in a deadly shooting last month in Winston-Salem. Police say Ethan Bain was found shot in a parking lot June 10th in the 27-hundred block of Reynolds Park Road. He died at the hospital. Investigators believe he got into an argument at a party and was shot while trying to leave. An arrest warrant was issued days later for Daschade David Bishop, who was arrested in the Detroit, Michigan area on July 5th. He was extradited back to North Carolina yesterday.

Greensboro Man Charged With Strangling Child

(Greensboro, NC) -- A Greensboro man is accused of strangling a child earlier this year. Court records show Jeremy Whitehurst was arrested in March on charges of kidnapping and child abuse inflicting serious injury. He was charged with two additional charges Monday. Authorities say on March 17th, Whitehurst strangled his girlfriend's seven-year-old son, who he was watching at the time. The assault caused the boy to lose his vision.

Crash Spills Cabbage Over U.S. Route 52

(Forsyth Co., NC) -- Authorities are investigating a crash that left cabbage on U.S. Route 52 in Forsyth County. The accident happened yesterday, leaving the southbound lanes of Route 52 closed near exit 120 and Westinghouse Road. No one is hurt. Crews were called to the scene to clean up after a truck carrying cabbages was involved in the wreck.
