Voter IDs Now Offered At NC Election Offices

(Raleigh, NC) -- North Carolina resident are now able to get a voter ID if they need one. Those people who don't have an acceptable form of identification to cast a ballot can pick one up from a local elections office. Applicants will need to provide their personal information, including the last four-digits of their social security number, along with a photo. The division of motor vehicles is also offering voter IDs.

Organizations Files Complaint Against Asheville School For Discrimination

(Asheville, NC) -- An Asheville charter school is accused of using racial discrimination in admissions. Western North Carolina Citizens for Equality filed a complaint against PEAK Academy with the Department of Education recently. The school was initially founded three-years ago with intentions of giving opportunities to all students. The complaining group now claims recent comments made by a founding member of the school aren't fair to white students and teachers. WLOS-TV reports Dr. Dwight Mullen made public comments about the large number of Black students in the school.

Buncombe Deputy Suing Man Who Shot Him

(Buncombe County, NC) -- A Buncombe County deputy is suing the man who shot him. WLOS-TV reports Deputy William Johnston filed a civil case this week against Ryan Houston, nearly three-months after a shooting at the magistrate court office. Houston allegedly pulled a gun out on the deputy during an attempted arrest. He's now facing aggravated assault and battery charges.

Canton Paper Mill Answer Federal Violation Accusations

(Canton, NC) -- The owners of a now-closed paper mill in Canton are fighting back against the Department of Environmental Quality. The agency originally issued a letter to Pactiv Evergreen close to one-month ago, accusing the mill of illegally dumping chemicals into wastewater. The Citizen-Times says a statement released by the company last week claims a discharge of cleaning solution and sanitizer was within water quality standards. The mill shut down in late spring, affecting one-thousand jobs.

Fletcher Woman Missing In Upstate SC

(Fletcher, NC) -- A Fletcher woman could be missing in upstate South Carolina. Investigators say 74-year-old Patricia Runion was last seen yesterday in the area of South Cove County Park in Oconee County. Family members are concerned due to her health problems and necessary medication. She was last seen in a maroon Toyota Yaris.

Asheville Tourists Help Goodwill Donations

(Asheville, NC) -- Asheville's minor league baseball team is helping out with local donations. The Tourists held a clothing drive yesterday to assist Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina. Game tickets were given out to those who donated at least four articles of clothing. WLOS-TV reports the total number of items yesterday hit around 25-hundred.

Mooresville Officer Arrested For Sexual Exploitation

(Mooresville, NC) -- A Mooresville police officer is facing child sex crime charges. Matthew Beebe was arrested this week on four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor after investigators allegedly found inappropriate photos on his phone. WCNC reports the eleven-year veteran was fired yesterday. Mooresville's police chief says investigators still need to look at the former officer's computers.

CMS To Hold Vote Over School Bond

(Charlotte, NC) -- A big vote is coming up for Charlotte-Mecklenburg school projects. County commissioners decided in a meeting yesterday to let the two-point-five-billion-dollar initiative be decided by the public. The funds would help in roughly 30 construction projects. There would be a rise in property taxes starting in 2025 if the bond is approved.

Off-Duty Officer Assaulted On CATS Bus

(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating the alleged assault of an off-duty security officer on a CATS bus. A passenger reportedly attacked the officer on Route 17 around Briar Creek Road and Creighton Drive yesterday. The officer suffered serious injuries. There's no word yet is any arrests were made.

North Carolina lottery officials revealed yesterday that someone who purchased a Mega Millions ticket at a Seven-Eleven In Pineville won one-million-dollars in Tuesday night's drawing. Seven tickets were winners of at least one-million nationwide. No one won the big jackpot, so this Friday's Mega Millions drawing will be worth at least one-point-two-five-billion-dollars.

Man Shot Outside Food Lion Dies From His Wounds

(Raleigh, NC) -- A man who was shot and wounded in the parking lot of a Food Lion on Lead Mine Road Tuesday has died of his injuries. The victim, identified as 49-year old Steven McLamb, was one of three people shot in separate incidents across the City of Raleigh that day. Investigators have not yet determined if any of the shootings were related. So far, no arrests have been made.

Tornado Victims In Rocky Mount And Edgecombe County Do Not Qualify For Disaster Declaration

(Edgecombe County, NC) -- People who suffered losses from last month's EF-3 tornado in Rocky Mount and Edgecombe County will not be eligible for state funded disaster assistance. That, from the State EMA yesterday, which said those two communities did not meet the required threshold of at least 25 homes or building structures with significant storm damage. The Nash County town of Dortches has qualified for state disaster assistance.

Pet Euthanizations Could Start Today At Wake County Animal Center

(Wake County, NC) -- Operators of the Wake County Animal Center say they may have to start euthanizing pets soon, unless people come in and adopt them. As of Wednesday, the shelter had reached its capacity with 114 adult dogs, 12 puppies, 42 cats and 52 kittens. The euthanizations could begin as early as today.

Unemployment Rate In Most North Carolina Counties Starting To Trend Upward

(Raleigh, NC) -- New figures released by the North Carolina Department of Commerce show the state unemployment rate for the month of June was three-point-six percent. The report also showed the jobless rate increased in 86 of the states 100 counties, decreased in five and remained unchanged in nine. Scotland County had the highest unemployment rate at six-point-four percent, while Swain County had the lowest at two-point-seven percent.

UNC QB Drake Maye Predicted To Win ACC Player Of The Year Again

(Chapel Hill, NC) -- UNC quarterback Drake Maye is on track to become the ACC Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Results released Wednesday from a poll of 176 ACC media members, show Maye received 88 votes for the upcoming football season, the most of any player considered. Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis was the second-highest vote getter with 66, followed by Clemson running back Will Shipley with 17. Maye also received the most votes for the 2023 Pre-Season All ACC Offensive Team with 107.

1994 Cold Case In Piedmont Triad Solved

(Reidsville, NC) -- Investigators believe a 30-year-old cold case in the Piedmont Triad is solved. Police announced that they had made an arrest in the 1994 death of Edward Ware, who was found dead on South Harris Street in Reidsville. After evidence was retested the State Crime Lab earlier this year, an arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Ware's nephew. Johnny Ware is currently in Georgia state prison for an unrelated homicide charge.

Woman In Custody, Man Wanted In Armed Robberies In NC, Virginia

(Burlington, NC) -- A woman is in custody and a man is wanted in multiple armed robberies in North Carolina and Virginia. Police say Jimmy Brown robbed Select Bank on Huffman Mill Road in Burlington last month. He fled in a vehicle being driven by Kristian Baldwin. The pair were also connected to an armed robbery in Burlington and an armed robbery at Carter Bank & Trust in Danville, Virginia. Baldwin was arrested last Friday, while Brown remains on the loose.

Woman Found Shot To Death in Greensboro

(Greenboro, NC) -- An investigation is underway after a woman was found shot to death in Greensboro. Police say Tiffany Holmes-Williams' body was discovered yesterday morning in the 100 block of South Church Street. No arrests have been made. Her death is being investigated as a homicide.

One Dead, Two Hurt In Randolph Co. Crash

(Randolph Co., NC) -- One person is dead and two others are hurt following a crash in Randolph County. The accident happened yesterday on I-74 towards Asheboro. Authorities say a vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic before hitting a guardrail and rolling over. The driver died and two passengers were injured, including a pregnant woman.

Robbery Suspect Shot In High Point

(High Point, NC) -- A robbery suspect is wounded after being shot in High Point. Police say the suspect was found with a gunshot wound Tuesday at an apartment complex on Taylor Avenue between West Green Drive and South Elm Street. Officers believe the suspect was shot by the victim. An investigation is ongoing.
