(Henderson County, NC) -- Investigators are trying to figure out what caused a fire that destroyed a historic home in Henderson County. Flames ripped through a home off Francis Road near the Cedar Bluff Apartments on Sunday night. The home was built nearly 100 years ago, but was reportedly vacant at the time of the fire. No firefighters were injured.
Power Restored For Most In WNC After Storms
(Asheville, NC) -- Most power outages have been restored after Monday's storms in western North Carolina. Severe weather caused lights to go out for more than 40-thousand residents in the mountains yesterday, but that number has now dwindled to less than five-thousand overnight. The chance of damaging storm systems is diminishing the rest of the week. High temperatures will be normal in the low 80s.
Asheville VA Hospital Rated Five-Stars
(Asheville, NC) -- The hospital dedicated to serving veterans in Asheville is receiving high markings. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services gave the Charles George VA Medical Center the highest rating of five-stars in its recent annual review. This year's ratings mark the first time that VA hospitals were included in the reviews. Scores were based on things like communication, cleanliness, care transition and discharge information.
McDowell County Wildfire Contained
(McDowell County, NC) -- A wildfire in McDowell County is under control. Lightning initially caused flames to spark in the Dobson Knob area in late July, which caused a fire over ten-acres. WLOS-TV reports nearly all of the fire has been contained, thanks to heavy rainfall late last week. A fire burned more than 17-hundred acres in the same area six years ago.
Car Slams Into Candler Home
(Candler, NC) -- Officers are still trying to find a driver who slammed into a home in Candler. A car reportedly lost control and hit a house on Oak Hill Road last Thursday, but the driver backed out and left before police could arrive. WLOS-TV reports a woman just closed on the home the day before.
Haywood County Board Offering More For Flood Victims
(Haywood County, NC) -- Haywood County is giving a bit more to help out victims impacted by Tropical Storm Fred two years ago. Commissioners recently approved a measure to spend 20-thousand-dollars for those needing utility or rental assistance. The storm caused several deaths and massive damage in August 2021. The deadline to apply for state assistance is coming up August 17th.
Charlotte Leaders Discuss Eastland Mall Site
(Charlotte, NC) -- Two options are being considered for development at the old Eastland Mall site in Charlotte. City officials met Monday to discuss the remaining major proposals for the land. They include multi-use sports fields, an amphitheater and esports venue. Another idea features an indoor sports complex. Union County Administrator On Leave After Arrest
(Union County, NC) -- Union County Schools is placing an administrator on leave following a weekend arrest. Beshawn Harris was arrested near Marie Garris Drive and Guoin Lane in Stallings early Sunday morning. Officers charged the 48-year-old with a DWI and a stop sign violation. Harris has served as assistant superintendent of human resources for just over three-years.
Albemarle Planning Board Members Resign After Controversial Comments
(Albemarle, NC) -- Two planning board members in Albemarle have stepped down after making homophobic slurs at a meeting last week. WCNC reports the members were caught on microphone making the comments while the board was discussing changes to zoning ordinances allowing drag performances. Mayor G.R. Michael told WCNC that the two resigned in interest of the community. He said the comments don't reflect the city of Albemarle's values or beliefs.
One Dead In South Charlotte Pedestrian Accident
(Charlotte, NC) -- The CMPD is investigating a deadly pedestrian accident in south Charlotte. Officers say it appears a woman darted out into traffic in front of a car on Old Pineville Road Monday morning. The driver stayed at the scene, and didn't appear to be intoxicated at the time. It's unclear is any charges will be filed.
Some CMS Students Begin School
(Charlotte, NC) -- Some CMS students are already back in class. Around 200 have returned this week to take part in the early college program at the uptown campus of Central Piedmont Community College. It's several weeks before other students will return to regular classes due to the state's law on the school calendar. Early colleges are exempt from the state ban.
Charlotte FC Heading To Leagues Cup Quarterfinals
(Charlotte, NC) -- Charlotte FC is advancing in the Leagues Cup. The black and blue came out on top of Houston Dynamo two-to-one in a round-of-16 match last night on the road. Next up is a quarterfinal match against Inter Miami, has been led by Lionel Messi in its last four-games. The Leagues Cup is a tournament between clubs from Major League Soccer and Liga MX, which is the top professional league in Mexico.
Thousands Still Without Power
(Raleigh, NC) -- Across western and central North Carolina Monday, strong straight-line winds of up to 70 miles per hour knocked down hundreds of trees and powerlines, causing widespread damage and resulting in over 250-thousand power outages at the height of the storm. An estimated 80-thousand were reported in the Triangle area. At last report, there were still around 150-thousand outages across the state. Miraculously, there were no reports of injuries or deaths.
UNC Chapel Hill Police Still Looking For An Alleged Rape Suspect
(Chapel Hill, NC) -- Campus police at UNC Chapel Hill have put out an alert for a male suspect, after a student was reportedly raped on Sunday. Authorities say it happened just after 6 p.m. at the loading dock near the undergraduate library and the UNC Student Studies buildings. The suspect has only been described as an adult male, about five-foot-seven, who was last seen wearing a blue shirt and short pants. Anyone with information is asked to contact UNC police.
Man Dies, Four Injured After Pickup Truck Crashes Into A House
(Sampson County, NC) -- Authorities in Sampson County are investigating a crash of a pickup truck into a house that left the driver dead and sent four people inside to the hospital. It happened Monday near the intersection of Church Road and Warren Mills Road. The NC Highway Patrol says the elderly driver of the truck was trying to avoid hitting another vehicle when it lost control and veered off the road and slammed into the house. The victim, identified as 75-year old Eddie Swindell of Newton, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Several Hospitalized After Vehicle Crashes Down An Embankment In Durham
(Durham, NC) -- Several people were injured last night, after a vehicle left the road and crashed down an embankment. It happened during heavy storms along I-55 and Highway 40 West in Durham. Investigators say it took rescue crews a couple of hours before the wrecked vehicle was located. No word on the conditions or the number of people who were hurt.
Deadlocked Budget Negotiations Could Halt Medicaid Expansion In North Carolina
(Raleigh, NC) -- Budget negotiators in the North Carolina General Assembly are now expressing doubt that a compromise agreement will be reached before the end of August. At issue are deep disagreements over a number of issues, including tax cuts and Medicaid expansion. If lawmakers in both Houses fail to pass a budget before September 1st, then Medicaid expansion will be delayed until December, leaving thousands of low-income North Carolinians without any health insurance coverage.
NC Football Club Announces Return To USL Championship League In 2024
(Cary, NC) -- The North Carolina Football Club will be part of the USL Championship league in 2024. In a statement released Monday, NCFC announced it will rejoin the top level of the United Soccer League for men. The North Carolina Football Club was part of USL Championship from 2018 to 2020, before moving to USL League One because of the pandemic. USL Championship is classified as a the top level Division II league by U.S Soccer. During the 2023 season, it featured 24 teams and two conferences; Eastern and Western. It plans to add four more teams before the start of the 2026 season.
Storms Hit Piedmont Triad
(Greensboro, NC) -- Cleanup crews are out and about after severe weather hit the Piedmont Triad. Storms rolled through the region last night, resulting in a tornado watch. Fallen trees caused damage to homes and have taken down traffic signals. There is no word of any injuries.
Klaussner Home Furnishings Closing
(Asheboro, NC) -- Klaussner Home Furnishings is closing down. The Asheboro based furniture company began the process of shutting down operations yesterday. Klaussner cited challenging and unexpected business circumstances as a reason for the closure. The company expects to close all of its facilities entirely, including five North Carolina manufacturing campuses.
Man In Custody On Murder Charges In Forsyth Co Now Charged With Killing Father
(Greensboro, NC) -- A man accused of killing multiple people in Forsyth County is now charged in the death of his father. Thomas Gillie was interview by detectives last month at the Forsyth County Jail. He was then charged with the homicide of his father, Douglass Gillie, in June. Gillie was previously charged with murdering two men at the Hawthorne at the Meadows apartments in Kernersville. It is unclear if the crimes are related.
Mold Found In Andrews Elementary School
(Burlington, NC) -- Students could be relocated for the start of the school year at Andrews Elementary School in Burlington after mold was found in the building. Officials say the mold was discovered around two weeks ago during summer cleaning of the school. The source of the mold appears to be the result of a broken compressor in one of the school's HVAC chiller units. Repairs and cleanup is underway. Andrews Elementary teachers are scheduled to return on August 18th, with students arriving on August 28th.
Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts Going Cashless
(Greensboro, NC) -- The Steven Tanger Center for the Performing Arts is going cashless next month. Beginning September 1st, patrons will no longer be able to use cash to pay for concessions, box office ticket sales, merchandise items or parking fees. Credit or debit cards will be required for all payments. Apple Pay will also be accepted.
