Senator Mitch McConnell tripped and fell following the Senate Republican lunch on Tuesday (December 10) afternoon.

Paramedics were called to his office and treated him for a "minor cut" and a sprained wrist.

"Leader McConnell tripped following lunch. He sustained a minor cut to the face and sprained his wrist. He has been cleared to resume his schedule," his spokesperson said.

As a result of the fall, McConnell missed the Senate Republicans' weekly press conference. Senator John Thune, who was elected to replace McConnell as the GOP leader in the Senate, said that he is doing fine.

"He's in his office," Thune said. "And any other questions about Senator McConnell, I'll refer to [his] staff."

Earlier in the year, the 82-year-old Senator announced he would be stepping down from his leadership role, which he's held for two decades. Thune will formally take over as the Republican leader in the Senate in January.

This is not the first time that McConnell has fallen in recent years. In March 2023, McConnell was hospitalized following a fall at a Washington, D.C. hotel. He suffered a concussion and fractured rib and was forced to miss six weeks on Capital Hill while he completed outpatient rehabilitation.
